I've seen Dio once. One time only. I remember being told I could only have one thing signed after the show. RJD signed the setlist I got that was taped to a speaker and after he did it I thanked him for coming and held out my hand for him to shake it. He looked at my hand then me and, I swear this, he said, "Friends don't shake hands, they hug." And he gave me a hug! Don't care about anything after, just that RJD gave me a freaking hug and he is the man!

@@TheCharismaticVoice if you listen to his live performances even at the end of his career, when he was on stage as the cancer was killing him, you'll be amazed at the quality of his voice. We're talking probably 2009. He had reunited with the members of Black Sabbath, and they toured as the band Heaven and Hell (apparently Ozzy sued and won the rights to the name Black Sabbath).
One of my favorite Sabbath songs is called "Falling Off the Edge of the World", and Dio nails it, even though he's in his late 60s. Same for the song "Die Young". These are both Dio Sabbath classics, and he's still able to get out on stage and belt it out.
He was one of a kind, and there will never be another metal singer with his vocal prowess, range, legato and longevity.

I know this is a year old now, but I just wanted to write that your initial facial expressions upon the opening of this song are entirely appropriate. His voice & music evokes so much emotion, especially if you're paying attention & involved into the feeling behind the sounds as you always are. Being a huge fan of Ronnie James Dio myself, his persona, his character, is completely present in his voice. And that voice is a icon in the history of music. Your unique perspective on his vocal qualities reinforces the power & subtleties of Dio's gifted instrument.

You can listen to the same song from 10 different live performances of his and they all have some subtle differences somewhere in the song. Yes, many singers can do this but in my opinion, none do it as well as he did. I have had the honor of seeing him live many times and he has never disappointed me. Give Children of the Sea a spin. I was a teenager in the sticks of Alaska in the '80's, and had no religion or spiritual foundation to speak of. When I discovered Ronnie James Dio, I felt but did not articulate that warmth and generosity he sends. His lyrics gave me some small portion of understanding of the choices needed to become evil or divine. In my heart he has always been that trustworthy and loving voice. I never got to see him in concert, but I've no doubt whatsoever that he's in Heaven, and if I can get there at the end of my mortal life, he'll be one in the first I look for to hug and thank 🖤♥️🖤

I hope Elezabeth reads this... I love at the start how you describe Ronnie as kind, warm, loving when he sings. Well I was in the crowd at a Dio concert getting crushed at the front of the stage, so had to climb on stage to escape... to be met with a wild Ronnie James Dio trying to kick me back into the crowd... luckily his legs were too short and he missed me. hahahaha one of the best gigs ever & probably the best rock singer ever - RIP RJD.

Of all the musicians I've met over the decades. Ronnie will always be the epitome of what Humble is. Every time we had the chance to talk ether before or after a show he made me feel like it was he that was the lucky one. It's a very rare personality that can make a fan feel like the followed & respected at the same time. The last time I saw him was at The House of Blues in Chicago when Scott Ian & Anthrax opened fro him. Took me right back to the 80s. I am grateful for the times we talked and will forever be grateful for the legacy of music he left behind.

Thanks for taking my suggestion to review this song - lots of comments below about Liliac. I agree Liliac do amazing Dio covers, and Melody is probably the best tribute singer to Dio of all time, but it would seem pointless to review Liliac covering Dio because, well, nobody can out-sing Dio! Please review Liliac, but performing one of their other amazing songs, not one of Dio's.
