  • HISTORY OF NORTH AMERICA - Before England ruled the Waves, there was the Mary Rose (1511-45), a technologically advanced sailing vessel that contributed to the future world domination of the English Navy, including the vast waters surrounding the North American continent. While she lay on the sea bed, the wreck of the Mary Rose and its contents were preserved in silt for centuries prior to being located in 1971 and raised in 1982 in one of the most complex and expensive maritime salvage projects in history. EPISODE 104 - Raising the Mary Rose.

Trying to connect a link between the Mary Rose and exploration and colonisation of North America is like, trying to link the Tiger tank to a Ford Mustang. Henry 8th had no interest in exploring the New World, he built a navy to protect his kingdom. The Mary Rose was designed to load up with men and cannon, sit a couple of miles off shore and engage with enemy ships in large naval battles. Navigation from compasses had been around for hundreds of years prior and seeing that it would only be in local waters or at most European waters, there was no advancement in cartography.
In his daughters era (Elizabeth 1st) was where you begin to see English ships in North America. These were built completely different to the Mary Rose. Forecastles were lowered and the bow became more streamlined to give more speed, with much lighter armaments. Henry's ships were basically floating wooden castles, their role was extremely different to that of the Atlantic crossings.
