The computer industry is moving towards the mobile direction, were people who actually come home and sit at a computer desk to use their desktop machine is becoming rare, due to the fact that tablets are rapidly becoming just as capable of doing PC tasks. If MS did not change their OS to reflect that development, Apple and Google would take over. People who want to hold back on that change are stagnating the market the same way people who wanted to stick with WinXP for so long, with DX9 etc.
Lot's of people may also want it on Origin or some other client. May as well just stick to the one that's built into the OS, so that it's available to everyone from the get go.
Anyone else notice that the leaderboard doesn't work on win8 version? it only holds your own hi score and nobody else. (I play while signed in on my Microsoft/xbox account) achievements work but no leaderboard data on other players?

Valve, EA, Ubisoft and various game stores all have their own one, and who knows how many more may come, and so needed to put a standard out there like Apple did. By not supporting Win8 and its marketplace, you're condoning these various clients.
50 million accounts in how many years, compared to 40 million users in how many months? Naturally people would prefer an OS that they're used to, as did I at first. You'll find that the majority of users are quite content with Windows 8 by simple forum reading, website reviews and the general reception. It's just unfortunate that a vocal minority resistant to change are the ones that were holding backing the industry from developing, especially since desktops are quickly becoming a niche at home
Steam works with every version of windows, not just 8 which means the audience is much larger...Windows 8, for desktop computers, is horrible (its ok for mobile devices, IOS is still better tho), as horrible as Windows Vista was back then or even worse (most of the desktop computer users will stick with W7 like they did with XP)
