Danny MacAskill - How we made "The Slabs"...

- Take a look behind the scenes of my latest film "The Slabs".
Watch "The Slabs" here: • Danny MacAskill - The ...
This behind the scenes film takes a closer look at exactly what went into filming my latest ride down the Infamous Dubh Slabs on the Isle of Skye. From walking and planning the route down the hill with my childhood friends Doug and James, to the challenges of reaching and scrambling up the mountain with heavy backpacks full of FPV drone batteries, and how it felt to be riding my bike along the edge of the exposed cliff tops before heading straight down the final slab.
With many of our overseas filming plans cancelled as a result of recent times myself and the crew decided to look a little closer to home for our latest film.
I am a big fan of rock climbing and have been inspired by the various men and woman who set new routes and test themselves on some amazing faces around the world so I set out to find some challenging Slab Rock routes on my home Island of Skye with an aim to ride them in a continuous line and test what was possible on my bike. The remote Dubh Slabs rising out of Loch Coruisk in the heart of the Black Cuilin ridge provided some of the steepest terrain I have ever ridden as well as an amazing back drop for the film.
The remote location and steep face forced us to think outside the box and meant we had to move away from traditional filming techniques, with us opting to shoot the entire film using GoPros mounted on myself and an FPV (First Person View) racing drone.

The best part was him taking time after a full day of filming to go and ride with the kids in the village. They will remember that for a very long time.
Absolutely, taking the time to ride with them even though he was tired made him a hero to the kids
Absolute class act he is
I know right? Danny is a people person, he likes interacting with people just like during his visit in the Philippines he rode with us in the streets
Ano legend
He is a hero! 👍👍👍💪💪💪
Danny's just created the worlds hardest strava segment.
I reckon he might have got the KOM on this one ngl
Me falling down the slabs will easily beat his time haha.
@@MrDemondal just take the GPS and throw it off the top as hard as you can
@@MrDemondal A small price to pay for KOM
yeah think no ones gonna beat it
That mars bar is ours!
can i have a beanie
Can I have the cheapest thing you sell
@Mi Yu lol
@@Tristanisme-gb8py I don't think they are gonna send you a thing that cost 100038179930000009€
@Mi Yu that u try bruh 😂
I enjoyed this even more than the actual video.
What a great guy with a big heart! I'm sure he was exhausted after that very long day and he still went out and played with those kids. This world needs more Danny's
Loved seeing the kids meet the boat with their bikes. Riding with Danny will be a night they'll talk about for years!
Danny: Go to the "Slabs" find my drone and I'll give you a Mars bar.
Everyone: OK!!
But what about the go pro 😂😂
@@druss841 You can't deep fry a go pro. :)
@@thedarkknight4366 Sure you can! Nice and crispy on the outside, with a melty-wires centre. Just take the battery out first
@@asharak84 Sounds like a treat I'll have to try it.
@@thedarkknight4366 why am I still on the internet
I almost like Danny's making of videos better than the edited cut. It's wild to see the inclines in perspective with people standing on them.
Huge props for riding with the kids, too. Who knows, he might have inspired another great rider in the making.
It’s always hard to tell how steep something is on camera but at 13:36 it shows you perfectly how steep that slap is. Nice one Danny and the rest of the crew
*slab
@@ryzo2002 hear, hear!
Steep!
You mad man!
Is this actually Ali clarkson
Oh hi Ali
@@josephhulme8044 no it’s Duncan shaw
@@sickcunt9386 your comment is very very good. Take my like good person
Surely your turn now Ali!
This is the best of your 'behind the scenes' videos. It makes the ride even more impressive. Brilliant stuff guys!
couldnt agree more so sick to see
Next up: Danny rides The Nose and El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. We'll done, gents! Great video. Even more amazing descent. 👍👍
Hope this hits the Trending page also. Peace from Ireland ✌🏼💚🇮🇪
The main video did I think
it did in Germany
It is here in Canada.
met danny and his crew a few times now, always kind enough to have a wee chat and humble enough to be approachable, and he always stops to chat and offer advice to the kids wherever he is, top bloke.
seems like it in the vids too
Playing with the kids shows your big heart, they'll talk about that years from now. Chapeau Chap :-)
Danny = big kid. The only thing he doesn't understand is why all those other kids were so much smaller than him.
For those who are wondering, the last song is: Tom Rosenthal - I Want You In My Dreams
cheer mate is it copyright free ?
What a genuine guy Danny is. It was so nice, how they went out with the kids, after filming all day as well. It shows how nice these guys are. So glad I watched this 😊.
That drone footage is unreal - hats off to the pilot!
How could anyone give this a thumbs down? Some of the best videos out there. Such incredibly steep footage. Kudos Danny.
I would watch a two hour documentary on this. Or just all the raw footage to be honest. Insane.
One thing that I really like about Danny is his friendly humble personality and the way he treats his fans, after a tough day at work he still has time for the fans, very class act
Дани!! Крепкого здоровья тебе!!! Успехов!!! Береги себя!!!
Danny also doubles up as a travel agency to tell me places I need to visit next
theres a bothy in the next valley over which is 5 miles away and completely free
@@tomhare5110 haven't been to Scotland and done bothy walks for a few years now - the midges in summer put me off for a while when I was there last but I really should go back

@Sam Hailes Go in May or September to avoid the worst of the Midge. Or only when it’s windy and sunny...
Lost count of how many times I've watched this (and the final cut) and still flinch at some points. I have an admission. I'm using this video as part of a training session to staff at my school about Safety Risk Assessment - "". Although we might not do this with the 10 year olds. Brilliant.
You are an absolute legend. I love your drive and ambition and class
💪
It's this stuff that gets my Gonads!!
🍺
So modest, so chill but its the breathtaking skill and bravery that leaves you speechless. Big up Danny, you are truly a legend mate.
The title should be: „How I became a Goat“
He already was the goat

Mental! Just mental! My palms were sweating all the way down. Great job, guys, all of you.
This is an example of CZcams creators at their finest. Pushing the boundaries of the content as well as how its filmed and produced. (certainly different than watching an unboxing video of the latest smartphone!). Really great job guys and thankyou for doing it.🤘
my heart shrunk and almost stopped, when you watched down that slope, even though I am quite stressproof. Danny, your are a hero.
Aye you’re getting a hang of this cycling malarkey 😂
think he might be 😂
No si bad eh!
You are a King Danny, always so inventive and creative that's why you are the GOAT!!!
Not many human beings capable of that on the planet! Big respect mate ⭐️
0:02 Wooo! This rock in 0:02
You're lucky Danny !
Even at 51 years young and from Scotland myself and been all over parts of the Highlands I've sadly never visited Skye.
One of the best fish suppers I ever had was in Kyle of Lochalash ''Before the bridge was built''
Absolutely love this video the most amazing landscape and scenery 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Serious skills and balls of steel.👏👏👏👏
What a great guy (really)! Comes back from a long physical day of riding and makes the time to ride with the kids that are waiting for him. Thanks for the privilege of watching you ride.
I love al your bts footage !!! Your are so smart danny !!! with the kids is a very beautifull moment !
You know it’s steep for two reasons:
1 - It looks steep on the GoPro and helmet camera.
2 - It’s a clear run because even the mountain goats were like “Nah bro, we’re out...” 😂.
3. They're measuring the incline in ° rather than %
The behind the scenes is just as fascinating as the actual video!
Great to see!
To be honest I love and respect brhe shooting skills of the drone pilot
Brilliant. Nothing less
The second most impressive thing in this video is how the camera guys can hike up a mountain in those pants. Those are glued on. Well done!
It looks steep on a helmet cam, which means it must look impossible in person.
I def agree
Nice danny good to see how it's done🤘
Danny's just created the worlds hardest strava segment. yes!
DM! You're a winner in my book and a I wish I had 25% your skill.
Mate you've put the "mountain" in mountain biking in a more potent manner than any wanker ever here. What a fabulous project and achievement! I'm sure your brake and rotor sponsors are blowing up because of this! I've climbed on Skye, and this blows my god damn mind. Balls of and bike control made of pure adamantium, Danny!
Awesome guys well done, makes me feel homesick for The Highlands and the Isle of Skye
This is more than talent... this is pushing the boundaries of what is possible for a human.
Danny is the KOM on this one.
Absolutely fabulous
Drones were invented just for this footage. You are a hero man!
Absolute legend.
Huge props to Andy Lawrence for that amazing minute-long tracking shot at the start of the final film.
WOWOWOWO.... many athletes put their video on youtube showing the super performance .. only few of them put on the failure too .. the troubles and much more ... like you Danny ... You're SUper ... really appreciate that.. and the facts you rode with the kids ..
Having scrambled up the Dubhs Slabs with a heavy rucksack, I can attest to how obscenely amazing it is to ride a bicycle down!
My first thoughts on watching the original video, was that bottom slab is simply too steep! Can't be ridden...... Amazing!
Absolutely brilliant.
Really needed this to appreciate just how truly insanely steep it is!!!
Both videos about this ride are great
WOW Wow wow Controlling Fear & Relying on your many hours of practice & Pure Talent
Enough ! You have proved you a mountain GOAT , please don’t go too far, total RESPECT.
That ride was awesome.
The drone work was spectacular.
Every piece of it was beyond top notch!
Danny, you are awsome, the best but yet, you are MAD, well done mate you made history
Thats 15 minutes I totally don't resent losing. Thank you.
I have seen these slabs with my own eyes and even though I've just watched a video of him riding down it and how he did it I still don't believe that he did 😂🤯 well played sir 👏
You are the GOAT Danny👌🏻🏴
What Danny does is incredible and the way the film crew and drone pilot have captured it is perfect.
Simply astounding!
wow congratulations to whoever flew the drone in the intro, the shot was spectacular !!!

HE IS THE BEST!!!!
this landscape is so beautiful
Absolutely bonkers.
You can’t give the man anything but respect, not only did he have the balls to do it, he had the insane skill to do it! That was amazing!!
Saw the segment on BBC news last weekend and was so inspired by what I saw that I bought myself an MTB this week. Can’t wait to hit the trails when it arrives.
The feels i got from this film.. GOOD JOB
You guys are truly amazing
"It's been a while since I've ridden any slabs..."
12:44 I wouldn't watch it either if I was there! Danny is a mad lad! When it's crazy steep in Gopro you kind of guesstimate the actual steepness and how many times the danger would be in person! 😅
What a beautiful spot. Absolutely incredible biking
Nothing better, Danny and crew. Simply amazing...And you gave those kids that met the boat something they will remember forever. Future slab riders maybe?
knowing that the cameraman wanted to close his eyes makes me feel better about my response when I first saw it!
What a Production Crew! Love it!
Amazing to see all the work that went into this!
I reckon that was better than the actual video. Truly incredible!
Best control I have ever seen!
Fantastic seeing all the work that goes on behind the scenes to make such a fantastic video.👌👌👌👌😁🤙🤙🤙
What a hero!
Totally Epic 🙌🏴🙌
Truly amazing.
If I were to attempt the slabs it would be renamed the scabs!
Never fail to amaze me!!
Love these behind the scenes edits, fantastic work fellas, stunning scenery 👍🤘
