Oops I was wrong, I realized I miss spoke on the Red Cabernet. Its actually a hybrid as well. Which I didn't realize since Ive grown it for 3 years and never thought to look into it. I have grown the flat of Italy, and also Austrian brown which are both heirlooms. Either way, doesn't change the fact Ive giving it a shot for 3 years and I still don't like growing it.

Onions have been good to me but last year like you i did things a little different and as you said more space apart was a big difference someone said 3 inches apart and i got ok onions with that space but last year i did 6 inches and wow i had some big onions there were some smaller ones but funny those were the ones i put here and there where there was space but i had some with some pepper plants they were the same size nice and big.
Like you i do mess around with hybrids even though i know i cant keep the seeds but i just dont have the energy to fight all the bugs and disease i try to keep a routine on my sprays and fertilizing but im 55 with a bad back sovyeah that im so happy to see your harvest and see how happy you are and that you learned something that will bring you success in the future because i learn something new every year so good some not so good. Another thing is grow what you eat you only have so much room and it get expensive to garden when you dont have animals and space to really compost.i have it bad with that one because no one in my family eat tomatoes but myself o can make sauce with them but i was growing 8-12 tomato plants every year and tomatoes are easy to start but so many disease ugh so im gonna cut back on them b cuz hibbys job was getting all them. Sorry this so long understand if you dont get to read the whole thing but you got me so excited and just wanted to share as well i guess so if you get this far my question is does it cost to have them test your soil and where did you say to take it again lol. Be blessed and i hope you have a awesome growing season this 2024 year.❤

Bre, I'm feeling like a proud mother/granny right now haha. Firstly, I started serious vegetable gardening three years ago and even though this was my best onion year, it still was disappointing especially after seeing yours. I love all your pointers and realize what mistakes I've been making, We are in Zone 8 here in north Texas and I will most likely try all seeds this winter starting in late December instead of buying bulbs. Thanks for all the tips and great videos that you put out...your style is very precise, well thought out, tidy and your love for gardening (and chickens) shines brightly, love that! p.s. Since our tomato harvest was insane this year, we ordered your exact tomato press machine and love it. Happy Gardening!

Bre, I just found your channel and I love your style! Clear, concise instructions. I've been gardening off and on for...... 40 years. I'm still learning. I have never had success with onions. Hopefully, with your tips, that will change! I learned a trick from Becky Jones on Acre Homestead. Dice up a zip lock bag of onions and pop in the freezer. They are ready to go in a second for whatever you want. It's so convenient to have them already cut up. I freeze dry diced and sliced onions too. I am now subscribed and look forward to learning more from you. This summer was a bust for me with all of this heat! 2 days ago the heat index was 112 here! That's too hot for humans and veggies. I'm looking forward to fall gardening! Thank you for sharing your gardening and preserving journey. Your garden is amazing!

You should be proud, great accomplishment. Here in southern Idaho we have two onion pests, thrips and root grubs. For the first neem oil applied every other day works and for the grubs I use Sevin. For the organic gardener Sevin may not be in the game plan but it fixes the problem and I apply it in the last six weeks of growth once a week to the base of the onion bulb. Again, great onions.

    Good morning.
Just a cool idea you can do when your potatoes come out for drying them/curing them and doesn't take up too much room. You can go to your local grocery store and ask them to save you strawberry boxes or grape boxes. Grape ones are more steady but either will work. They do reall good because they can be stacked about 10 to 12 high and most have multiple holes in them for air circulation. I got mine from my local publix after i asked the produce manager to save them for me.

Excellent video. I've grown short day onions for 30 years... from transplants. I haven't had success with growing from seed. You've inspired me to try again this Fall.
I was surprised at how comprehensive your video was. It took me years to learn what you shared.
Not as criticism, but since you desire to learn...
    2 things.
I've found it's important to mulch the transplants as soon as they perk up in their new home. It helps moderate both water and soil temp. Here, I put down about an inch of loose wood mulch. We typically get half inch to inch of rain at a time. If you get more rain typically, then a deeper mulch may work better.
Also, loved the rack your husband made for drying. For storage, I suggest using stacking milk crates. I put down newspaper at the bottom. Then arrange a single layer. Then stack another crate. A cheaper option is nursery flats that the big box stores discard. Their disadvantage is the depth. They can't be stacked, so you need more shelves. Finally, I usually keep them in the garage. Don't do that if you have a gas lawn mower or other chemical odors in the garage.

    Brie,
Thanks for this video! I'm already a couple of weeks late on the getting mine started from seed - also just this week I found out (using the USDA map) that here (St. Louis area) I'm actually 7a and not 6b! I've always known that St.L (maybe because of the river?) is a strip of 6b surrounded by 6a, but my actual area is 7a! (I know it's all just averages.) Anyway, I've never planted out much earlier than 1-2 weeks before last frost, and am learning what a mistake that is. Thanks for reinforcing this information and making me feel better about it! Also love the info about growing fewer seeds per cell - going to give that a try when I start my seeds tomorrow.
I do have a question: you said that your onions survived -19? A quick google search says they don't like under 32 (?) or were you talking in Centigrade? Anyway, I'm trying an experiment right now - I left the small onions from last year in the ground to see if they can overwinter - it's been consistent 0-10 degrees for about 2 weeks, but since it snowed as well, I didn't cover them (counting on the snow to do the insulation...)

I used a all purpose fertilizer inside. Next year my plan is to try kept fertilizer while all my plants are inside. As far as outside goes that depended on my soil test. Omg now I’m worried. Some of the tips of my onions were flopping over so I figured I would grab them and dehydrate them. Now I’m worried I will get small or moldy onions 😳😳😳. Now I know not to touch the others.

Im sure a few doesn't hurt, but It would be something I wouldn't do often. My harvest last year was terrible by cutting the tops. A few days after doing so all my onions were wiped. Wishing you a great harvest this season!
