Two teams of mules mowing oats for hay in Manchester, TN. Terry Preston and Buddy Black make mowing hay with mules look easy in this video from June 2, 2012.
I just found one of these mowers and I pushed it o to the trailer by myself , still smothered as butter. I couldn't beleve it had been siting since the 50s and was not rusted solid.
The mower with steel wheels is an International Harvester No.9. It is widely regarded as the best mower ever made. I bought that one out of a man’s yard. He said his dad bought it new. An Amish shop in Kentucky rebuilt the mower. It is really a good one.
What shop might be a little closer to me here in southern ohio than farmers repair I'm trying to get into carriage building/repair and the repair of this equipment myself
I'm buying one of these next week. Mines like the one with metal wheels. the lady im buying it from said her dad parked it in the front yard 20 yrs ago, I'm going over tomorrow and hosing it down with some kroil penetrating oil gonna let it sit for a,week hopefully that will help free up the wheels .these old pieces of farm equipment are awesome.
Actually, draft equines "emit" considerable methane. It's not a zero footprint in the sense that they eat a lot, and the efficiency isn't there unless you work them daily, or just have idle pasture for them. I still love the petroleum free farm work.
The worsted thing I ever had to mow was oats and vetch mixed; the problem was the vetch wanted to pile up on the swatch board on the end of the cutter bar.
Yes sir. We know the difference. We planted oats to cut for hay. Rather than letting the plants go to seed, these oats were cut for hay when the plants were in the "milk" stage. The seed had not yet formed. When you squeeze the seed head a white, milky liquid comes out. The plants are high in protein at this stage. When fed, none is wasted. It seems as if they almost lick the ground when all the hay is cleaned up.
Look on Craigslist. Look for an Amish auction. Find someone who works horses or mules. They made millions of them in the 1940s. Or you can buy a new mower. White horse machine company makes a new one. I&J Equipment makes one. See links below.
The word I was thinking about was worst; but it came out when I typed it to worsted. worsted is a word. (have a nice day) (wor·sted)ˈwo͝ostid,ˈwərstid/nounnoun: worsted; plural noun: worsteds; noun: worsted yarn; plural noun: worsted yarnsa fine smooth yarn spun from combed long-staple wool.fabric made from worsted yarn, having a close-textured surface with no nap.

I think my grandpa ran one with a team of horses way up into the 1960's. Need to ask Dad if it might be parked in a fencerow somewhere.

How do they pick it up and bale it after its cut?

My dad wouldn't let me cut hay with the mule-drawn mower. That is like the mower we had
green oats is very good feed.

And then suddenly a snake slithered between the mule's front feet. They later found the farmer upside down in a lake five miles away.
