    Fun fact: The Coen brothers used to live in an apartment with Sam and Ted Rami the creators of Evil Dead. Holly Hunter, Francis McDormand (who are both in this film), and Kathy Bates also roomed in the apartment occasionally. This was during the 80s and they collaborated multiple times on each other's films. Joel helped edit the original Evil Dead which is how he met Sam. After the Coen's first movie, they wrote the script for the film Crimewave which Rami directed and Bruce Cambell had a role in, the Coens also helped Rami on the production of the film Darkman. Rami had a cameo in the Coens film Millers Crossing and went on to help them write The Hundsuckers Proxy, which Ted and Bruce both have roles in. Finally, when the Coens struck big with Fargo, Sam directed a Minnesota-based thriller called A Simple Plan which the Coen's advised him on. Rami and the Coen's filmmaking history are very linked.

    This movie was a favorite of my dad and I, when I was a kid in the late 80’s. It was decades later I realized it was a Coen Bros product. Its so enjoyable to watch stories that aren’t funny at all, often really dark, but yet their films are chock full of humor.
    I mean, the premise here.....a thief marries a cop, and they steal a baby because she can’t have kids....normally a tragic true crime drama.....but here hilarity ensues.

    I was thirteen when this was filmed in my hometown of Tempe, AZ (most of it, anyway. The exterior trailer scenes were out in Apache Junction.) I got to watch them film about half of the police chase scenes, because they were either filming in my neighborhood or by where my parents worked. Two years later I recreated the railroad track jump scene when I got my driver's permit.
    This film will always hold a special place in my heart, because it showed me how hard films are to make and to appreciate the artistry and perseverance of film makers.

    You know watching this I'm realizing how lucky I am to have the parents I do. They allowed us to watch pretty much anything throughout the eighties and nineties. Obviously I didn't appreciate the subtleties of this film, when I was 7 yrs old, but I'm glad I was able to watch it when I did. These brilliants films are so important to my own love of storytelling. As Carl Jung suggests; stories, and myth making, are foundational to the human experience. In the absence of religion, and the community that engenders, I have these films that allow for a communal experience. Watching along with you, I'm overcome by nostalgia and I'm back in our old condo (that no longer exists), experiencing this again. Time can take everything from us, but it also gives us the memories to keep us going. Thanks for this one James.

    The Coen brothers are actually good friends with Sam Raimi, and the first role either one of them had on a feature film was Joel as assistant editor of The Evil Dead. Raimi then came up with the idea for them to film one scene of their first movie, Blood Simple, with Bruce Campbell, and use it as a trailer to take door-to-door and raise money, and that's exactly what they did. So yeah, he was a huge influence, and there are Evil Dead-esque shots in at least their first 3 movies from what I remember (Raimi even cameos in Miller's Crossing).

  • @DanJackson1977
    @DanJackson1977 Před 3 lety +1

    If you're wondering why some shots have a Evil Dead vibe... Raimi and The Cohens are friends.. they're from Michigan.. Raimi showed Sonnenfeld (Cohens DP) how to do the Ram-O-Cam technique (mounting a camera in the middle of a 2X4) for POV shots.. and Raimi helped the Cohens film a special fake trailer to sell / make "Blood Simple", their first film. Also.. the very idea that Looney Tunes needs to be explained to them is genuinely sad and depressing.

    I know they're not the same but, in my mind, Raising Arizona and True Romance always felt like they're from the same universe; there's a core theme of innocent, true love surrounded be chaos or surviving chaos.

    You call this a very joyful watch, and that is exactly what this video was. I knew you were going to like the almost-dazzling cinematography, and I'm happy you laughed as much I did the first time I saw it. When this came out, I could not figure out how the hell they did some of those camera shots, those "Evil Dead" camera shots. I'm not sure which came first, or if they had affiliated people, but that was the first I had ever seen those kinds of "beyond-Steadicam" shots. Always great watching your vids, James!

    I recommended this to a couple at work, both in their 20s. They didn't like it at all, saying they preferred more 'sophisticated' humour. I found that really sad. If you can't appreciate craziness, you miss out on so much of life. For another crazy recommendation, I'd suggest "Take the Money and Run" - a film made in semi-documentary style, about an incompetant criminal. A truly great film, but it stars Woody Allen, and people kind of pretend his films don't exist any more.
