There's plenty of videos going around with CHEAP rent, but for dungeon looking apartments with no windows which bear a closer resemblance to a jail cell than somewhere you'd actually wanna live!
If you're a backpacker looking for a $5 per night hostel dorm, then this video isn't for you! But if you're a digital nomad, who appreciates a comfortable, spacious place whilst not breaking the bank - then this is for you!
In this video I'm taking you through a real time search of the main platforms I use for short term (1 to 3 month rentals) in Medellin, Colombia.

I'll be starting with the main tourist areas and venturing out to some areas you might not have heard of, but wish had earlier! I'm gonna explain a bit about each area that I'm recommending, whilst also showing you some places under $1000 a month where I'd recommend staying.
G'day, my name's AK and on this channel I explore expat life in Medellin, Colombia. Whether you're considering moving to Medellin or just visiting Colombia, I've got you covered. Join me as I show you exactly what living in Medellin and Colombia as an expat is really like.

I think the reason gringo prices exist is because 1. they need the apartment to be furnished and 2. Gringos have no credit history or verifiable income in the country so the landlord's taking a bigger risk.
That's very true ✅️
Hi AK, Glenn Carlson here. Thanks for the inspiration! Your Awesome videos are very helpful to me.
Thanks for watching Glenn!
We have been researching neighborhoods for our future stay - this was great info! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! I hope you enjoy your stay!
I stayed in a shared apt with one other person in Santa Lucia for 4 months back in 2015 for $425 a month. Wasn’t bad. Of course I’d do a private apt next time. I was close to the train and wasn’t long trip to estradiol or poblado
yeah there's a lot of benefits in that too, especially if it's with a local - learn the culture, meet their friends, practice Spanish etc.
Highly recommend boston/bombona area. I lived there for five months or so and it was great. Some great spots around there and felt safe.
Yeah? It's safe out there? It's so close to Centro
@@AKJoel It's not like Centro at all, although it's close. And I can't be definitive but I personally felt safe. Walking around at night was okay too.
I'll be doing Peru and Inca Trail in a couple of weeks, and at the end of June I'm moving to Medellin so this video is perfect!
Awesome glad I could help!
Thank you for this video!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Can't stay amywhere in Medellin without security in the building
Great video 💯💯💯
Cheers mate! Glad ya enjoyed it!
Me watching this and cringing at these prices on Airbnb 🥲
Haha yup, it's definitely skyrocketed lately!
Anybody using AirBnB must be crazy. I pay to the owners directly and sae 50-70% per month. In any location, also in Poblado.
Medellin is the place to be !!! ill be looking to move there for a while but i rather rent a one year contract term apartment, they currently have it for $600 a month no furniture with security pool and gym access.
Yeah you can get much much better deals if you get long term rentals without furniture, but it can be complicated which is why many people just opt for AirBnB haha
I remember when $500 a month was high for Poblado.
I made a video not even a year ago where I was renting a 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom with pool, gym, basketball court etc. in Poblado for $1500 and everyone scoffed and said what a ripoff. Now you're lucky to get a 1 bedroom for that price lol
@@AKJoel That’s so true.
I pay $150 in Pereira nice place too
So cheap, but Medellin is the place to be mate!!
great video!
Thanks mate!
One day when I become financially strong i would not mind moving to Colombia 🇨🇴.
Good luck with it! :)

Why are you using Airbnb? Double the price of Colombian website listings
This is geared towards people who are coming for a short stay - not everyone is gonna deal with Colombian real estate agents to stay for a month. Also there's a HUGE amount of scams out there - so AirBnb is the safest for newcomers before they get comfortable with the city.
@@AKJoel Word
@@AKJoel agree, valid point
@@MNDanno could you pass along these websites? thanks in advance!
Hey champ..awesome videos !
Looking at moving back for good...awesome if we could get in touch..
Will be down there end of year
No worries mate, happy to help out and answer any questions you have - www.akjoel.com/consultations
Otherwise you can just leave them here and I'll respond!
@AKJoel awesome mate..just concerned as I haven't been back for a while but looking to invest their and ultimately reside..so many fricken scammers you are a blessing !!
Mrs said we'll bring you some Vegemite and etc..😛
@AKJoel hey mate..👍
I'm not big on this social media thing with links and @ and etc...🤣
Old school sorry mate...
I'm bothering to let you know Jan 26 the cook and I will be flying in for a month for a bit of a holiday but also looking to see how we can eventually make a permanent move..
Mate you seem like you have it all worked out and it be great to meet with you and ask you 1000 questions !
Obviously your time is valuable and I'm happy to pay for that..!!
In the meantime...we're looking to spend a week of the month in Guatape in a place with a pool..concerned to do it online as I know the scams and the rorts...maybe you have experience in Guatape ?
Mate let me know it be great to get involved with someone of your knowledge.
Flying in Jan 26..I'm staying in Itagui at my parents place.
Let me know if there's something you need brought to you..?
Great info as always! I’ll be referencing this video again soon as I book a place.
I think you said before not to commit beyond a short-term stay in advance. But if I find a seemingly really good place with good reviews, I don’t want to risk losing it or having to switch places multiple times in one 6-8 week stay. Thoughts?
I would always try and stay there for atleast a couple of weeks first. Cos there's so many things that can go wrong in Colombia from construction popping up, to bad wifi, to issues with the appliances and an unresponsive landlord etc.
The perfect reason for old retired people who aren't really healthy & wealthy to avoid that area ! = The law of the jungle these days ? @@AKJoel
Great finds! 👍
I checked again and prices have gone up even more!!! It's crazy!
Great video bro!
Cheers brother! 👊🏾👍🏾
Where's that Milla de Oro chess club happening that you mentioned?
It's not really an official thing, but usually happens on Sundays at Hija Mia (Milla de Oro) around 12pm (depending on of people are available.)
Those apartments you mentioned on Airbnb, let's say we were not booking them on Airbnb, we are speaking strictly in Spanish and booking them for rent with the local landlord or agent, how much do you reckon they would cost? My guess would be $600.
Yeah man you can probably get them 25% cheaper off AirBnB and upto 50% cheaper if you get them long term without furniture
@AKJoel None of the kitchens had an oven. Is an oven not a thing there? I see ranges, just no ovens.
I've definitely lived in places with ovens before, I didn't even notice that the ones in this video didn't have an oven haha
@@AKJoel I ask only because I was looking at apartments and I never saw a picture of an oven. Can you tell me how common/uncommon it is for that in a kitchen?
I mean I don't have all the construction facts on Medellin, so take my comment with a grain of salt but from my personal experience I've seen ovens in about 70% of the place I've lived in - granted I only rent in Estrato 5 & 6 (once 4.)
Where is the location for the chess group ? How often does it occur?
There's no organized group, it was just a few of our mates randomly organizing days to play during the week!
500 is tight budget??? It's 2 monthly salary in colombia lol
Yeah but nobody earning $250 a month is living in any area that tourists would want to live
Guys can I ask a question thats been concerning me Im travelling to Medellin in 5 days I have my Air BnB booked and everything but my question to you guys is whats the best way for me to pay for food at restaurants and most importantly Ubers or White Taxis ...should I have Colombian cash on hand or should I pay by credit card or debit .. also are both Mastercard and Visa accepted in Medellin
Credit cards work here, white taxi from the airport or Uber are both fine, you don't need cash
Gracias AK y mucho gusto saludos from Canada
Can I find somewhere for $600-$650
Definitely - but depends in which neighbourhood!
How much for a 1 bedroom furnished rental in Sabanata?
My mate just got one for $550
Talk about deceiving click bait these are airbnbs you can get a regular rentals for less than half of these prices lol
Yeah this video was specifically made for short term visitors - basically showing them which areas to look at and what they can expect on Airbnb. The local rental market is hard for some people to figure out and also can be difficult for those who don't have a local ID.
$1000 haha. Just go to a real neighborhood and pay $300. Don’t be scared. Poblado sucks.
What about bello?
Not safe - I wouldn't recommend it.
@@AKJoel thanks for the heads up. Would it be safe to look at laurels and envigado for a single mother with small children
I would suggest Envigado - it's known as the safest neighbourhood and many families with small children prefer to live here. It's also cheaper than Laureles.
@@AKJoel thank you 🤲🏾
most of these looked rather dodgy. seems for 1K it is not possible to find any decent place in Med
On AirBnb it's difficult
It's lost it's desirability for many even at $500 ! -- Other more remote areas in Colombia or even smaller cities are really cheap - when you consider (?) one can live for their entire budget - closer to $500 than $1000 - your intending just for rent !?! - - - All your doing is comparing to the extremely high priced really expensive areas of the US most people can't afford anyway. -?-
It's true you can move to a smaller city and decrease your living expenses but you'd be hard pressed to find a city as modern and as big as Medellin for as cheap.
I like centro
It's an interesting place that's for sure!
You really need AC?...fI thought Medellin was the land of eternal spring...I"m renting in Sabaneta for $700.00 and I have no AC. Does it really get much hotter?
Yes, Sabaneta is much cooler - where I am right now in Laureles we sleep with the AC on every night
Goto 700
Nothing avaliable for that price, maybe a room but not an apartment in any place worth staying!
How about Laurales
I love that you picked $700 because I'm currently in the process of finding an apartment for a subscriber of mine in Laureles for $700. Honestly it's been extremely hard - the only places available are studios with basically no amenities - and even they're hard to find!
@@AKJoel Things are getting high
Dude, that is Santa Maria de Los Angeles. That is not Milla de Oro! Also, how can you say stop paying gringo prices to then go appt hunting on fucking AirBNB????? Lol is this a joke?
This is a video made for tourists, they usually look to stay a month or so and don't have the time or patience to go through the local real estate agents and all the problems that avenue presents.
