- I find hardware synths to be a lot more tactile and conducive to creativity. Here I show you my method of using MIDI to control my Prophet Rev 2 so you can get the best of both of both worlds. Get that analog vibe while still being able to edit takes!

Seems like a good way to work - thanks I've been looking for something like this method so simple but so effective
Love it. Just now getting into hardware synths and excited to work with them via midi.
Appreicate it man! I realized that this is exactly what I began doing lol...just seems so logical and intuitive, glad to know I'm doing it right!
Man this was super helpful, thank you! Something that might be useful to you is the Option-Shift-Up/Down command! Pitches the midi notes by octaves rather than semi tones or having to manually drag
I greatly appreciate this. Iâve struggled with this for a while. I didnât know about track stacks and summing stacks
They are extremely useful, especially when you start getting into larger track counts. Itâs basically a quick way to group sounds together and send them to a single bus.
Thanks for taking the time to make this.
Great video. Just started using Logic and looking at best way to route my synths.
Brilliant. Very creative. Thank you very much.
Great vid. I have a rev 2 desktop and hydra desktop and mainly use Ableton but jump into logic every now and again. I definitely agree with midi always feel somewhat unfinished.
I use all of my hardware synths (REV2 included) in Cubase as instrument tracks. This way I can record midi and bounce in real time once i am happy with all midi parameters in there. Exception to the rule would be Analog Rytm and Tempest, as I record these directly into audio. Ah yeah, some synths like modular stuff I record directly in audio tracks too.
Thanks! This is awesome -- exactly what I needed to know. I think I'm going to buy the Apogee too, as you have demonstrated that it indeed will work.
Glad to have helped!
Dude!! I thank you!!!
many thanks it was so helpful for me
Thank you very much! This was very very helpful. You're awesome! lml
Glad to help!! :)
appreciate it man
This is really handy, thanks!
Glad to hear!
Thank you, i didnât know how to do this. I just have my module there.
Yeah, and a fast way of pitching MIDI oct up or down is to just highlight the region that you wanna change, then hold down SHIFT+OPT(ALT) and use arrow-keys up/down =)
Luv it, ya definitely will incorporate this in my future workflow
A complete and minusive tutorial of prophet rev2 would be great. Gracias!
Alright Iâll look into doing a tutorial on the prophet :)
Keep working your channel will grow
Great tutorial. I've just hooked up my old Novation Nova after 20 years after watching it. My only worry is how to record performance program data like your cut off example. Tried using automation and latching in Logic but no go? Is it a matter of knob twiddling in real time when bouncing it to audio?
Nice! Glad I could inspire you to get that hooked back up :).
My prophet Rev 2 receives my modwheel information so can automate that in with Logic (I assume the Novation would work similarly) and itâs just a matter of routing my prophets mod wheel to effect whatever parameter I want. I honestly prefer working with audio though and using my actual hardwares knobs, so recommend just twiddling with them in real time.
Do you not set it up in stereo? By connecting both audio cables and clicking the stereo button on the audio track? (The little button to the left of âinputâ on the channel strip. Unless you are trying to save, or donât have enough, input channels on your interface.
Ya I purposely run mono because of inputs on my interface, I just got used to it and If I want a nice stereo patch I will record two takes and modulate them differently by hand and then pan them out to taste. Makes for fun and unique stereo patches.
Thank you for this, Aaron Rodgers.
đđđđđ
That joke didnât age well. Great vid!
I wish I was as excited about audio tracks. I wish everything could be in midi. I would like to see you create your drum tracks too.
Iâll have to do a video on my drum programming process! Iâm pretty happy with how I have it dialled in now.
You can extract midi from a lot of melodic things, I.e your voice! via the flex pitch part of logic.
i just got a behringer 2600 but man do i want a rev 2. thanks for all the dope
content. hoping someday i can afford one đ
Congrats! Ya the Prophet is pretty nice, thankfully not as steep as some other Dave Smith synths đŹ
I also have the rev 2 with logic and Scarlette sound card but recording is early instead of on time ?
You may want to look into your IO buffer size in your DAW. Sample rate could also be something to check.
Great video !
Can someone help me please with the global setting in REV2 to set up correctly ? I'm following all the steps from video (using Scarlet Focusrite 2i4) and still cannot get the signal from MIDI in the LOGIC Pro X.
I have mine set up:
Midi Channel - All
Midi clock mode - Master
Midi clock cable - midi port
Midi parameter Rcv - CC
Midi control - On
Midi Prog enable - on
Midi Sussex cable - Midi
Midi out select - midi + USB
Hope that helps, you may potentially need to look into your midi controller setting as well and make sure midi can go through.
Nice track stack idea! But Prophet Rev 2 has L/R stereo outs, why did you plug in only one 1/4â instrument cable? Did I miss something?
Just a personal preference on my part, I like working with mono tracks so I can layer/add stereo effects and do all the panning in logic itself. Also Iâm lazy and I have my other input hooked up to my vocal mic hah
Does the Rev 2 not have a usb cable? I just plug the P6 into my computer and us that as the midi controller?
It does! I just prefer my midi controller on my desk because it also had drum pads and faders.
how do i connect the midi controller with the interface or laptop?
You can just connect your midi controller to your laptop via USB.
Nice Insight !!!
Hi there, I have a TR8s assigned to midi channel 10 and a minilogue assigned to midi channel 6. I've armed record on both channels and checked auto demix by channel but the Tr8s pattern is playing the channel 6 no matter what i do. Driving me nuts can anyone help?
Hmmm I dunno if I have an answer for ya
I did this with my OpSix. I'm successfully controlling the synth via my controller as well as recording both audio and midi but when I try to play back the midi without touching my keyboard there is no sound / anything coming back from what I previously played. Any tips?
Sounds like your midi controller is sending midi to your OpSix but not your DAW. Make sure your DAW track is sending midi out via the right midi channel.
Please connect second trs cable. Iâm sure you will be surprised of organic panoramas of prophet. Prophet 8 was designed as stereo synth.
Ya Iâve definitely use it stereo as well, all depends on the sound Iâm going for âš
thereâs something Iâm missing. So you record the midi only at first, then how do you get that session recorded from one track the the audio track? And why did you use a midi device for the midi? Canât you use the Prophet as the midi for itself?
Yup you can totally use the Prophet as the midi device for itself. I just like using my midi controller as itâs set up on my desk. You just need to have a separate audio track armed for the prophet and then when you press record the midi you recorded will play the prophet leaving your hands free for twiddling knobs :)
I'm using a keystep and I cant get the MIDI notes to playback....its just silence when the loop goes. I can see the MIDI notes with the piano roll but it doesnt play anything back.
This is with the key step routed to your prophet rev 2? Also have you gone through the prophet rev 2âs global midi settings to make sure they are receiving mid?
LOL the pan right thing is bizarre. Good stuff though man, I love the Rev2. I have been thinking of buying one, but I remembered I had bought the Arturia V collection a while ago which includes a Prophet clone VST, so I have been messing with that instead. The CPU usage is no joke though in logic. What machine are you using for your production?
I use an iMac, I honestly was looking into the Arturia stuff as well but i feel I need to focus on less stuff and hardware is always just more tangible. I already have too many plugins Iâm slowly deleting.
Very nice video, thanks, but my Korg prologue does not do, what it should be from 3.04 minute of Your video..The external synth simply does not read that midi track and keeps quiet...Do You have any idea? Thanks in advance
Hmm hard to say, does your prologue receive midi when you play your midi controller? Make sure you go into your midi settings on the prologue and have the global channel set correctly.
@@markbergsound thanks for Your reply. Well I have check midi settings in Prologue as You have written and it works! New era of diferent composing has started. Before I only used VST synths, but now I see huge sound quality diference. I was also thinking getting Prophet REV2-8 for wide soundscope layer sounds, are You satisfied with this synth? And do You think 8 voice polyphony is enough for wide flowing pads? Thanks again
Great! I was wondering how you might handle not using a midi controller, and recording the midi from the synth it self.
For example, say you are doing a multitrack recording session of a synthesizer band - several people each playing external synths that: send audio, send MIDI, receive MIDI. I'd love to record each instruments audio and midi, each on their respective tracks. Then, after the initial recording, you can do your alternate takes and tweak the external synth like you did in your video.
Whenever I do this, the MIDI tracks seem super unreliable - sometimes they don't record, sometimes they do, sometimes the mid tracks demix to their respective tracks, sometimes they merge for no apparent reason (even wit the auto demix setting checked in the settings). I find Logic confusing to use when doing multitrack MIDI + audio recording.
One day... one day I'll get a nice flow for this
Woah ya never tried working with that many midi devices at once, I feel like a lot of the issues may come from the devices themselves. For example my prophet wasnât working properly for awhile and it was because I hadnât updated a driver on it. So ya good luck with the pursuit! Iâm sure itâs doable, just will take a lot of trial and error and isolating individual synths.
Interesting! Iâve got the Akai Advance 49, now I want to buy the MPK 261 although itâs quite old already. Would you recommend it as you have got the 49? There is a very good offer for it at the moment. Or would you recommend another one?
Honestly havenât done too much research on midi keyboards in awhile but this one has everything I ever could want and donât plan on replacing it anytime soon.
@@markbergsound Thank you, this answer is helpful for me. đđ»đđ»
Hi, would you be kind enough to provide a full kit list of your studio equipment? Thanks.
I could but it really has changed drastically so depends what you are hoping to achieve. I now use my Prophet as itâs own midi controller via usb instead of the method shown in the video. I have a drum pad for midi drum programming but everything else keyboard/synth wise is just controlled and fed back into prophet. My audio interface is a RME Babyface Pro FS now.
@@markbergsound Thank you for taking the trouble to provide this inofrmation, Mark.
Hey I have a problem, when i connect my mono Jack from my synth to my audio interface and try to play keys no sound is produced, but it shows the green bar signifying that thereâs some sort of connection, any help?
I have an Artiuria micro freak
Make sure you have an audio track created with input monitoring turned on
Hey, logic isnât picking up any midi data when I do this while trying to record. Any idea whatâs going on?
The midi data should be coming from your midi controller not your synth. But ya hard to know whatâs happening on your end without seeing all the details.
@@markbergsound Thanks for the response, I just quit logic and reopened it, and then it started working again
Hi tell me you always have a slight delay/latency from mid to record audio from the hardware synth...how do you go about it...do you manually drag it then to bar, the audio material ?
No delay problems on my end. Maybe look into your latency settings in Logic?
@@markbergsound When I record the midi track of hardware synth into a new audio track I always have some latency can I set this delay directly somewhere like in Ableton?
Good video! Have you tried other synths before settling on the REV2?
Hey thanks! I used to own a Juno 106, which I miss a lot, lots of character. But ya eventually settled on the REV2 because I used to use it live and I could replicate most synth sounds I produced on the computer with it :).
@@markbergsound thanks, that makes sense. I might pick it up as my first poly.
Sometimes CZcams algorithm is legit scary, Exactly what I needed before I ever searched for it.
Haha love it :)
@@markbergsound I am a little confused about the midi implementation. You showed your Midi controller connected to the Hardware Synth. How does Logic connect to it? I assume that logic connects to the keyboard controller via USB. Is that passed through to the midi out on the keyboard controller? I suppose the setup could be a little different if you have a direct midi interface on the computer.
when i plug my prophet in with an audio interface like you did nothing comes up
Hey! Iâm only plugging in my prophets audio out, I use my midi controller for all my midi programming since itâs at my desk but you can definitely set up your prophet as a midi controller. Plug it in via USB midi directly to your computer and Logic should be able to recognize it. Hope this helps!
çéŒ, èé继ç»ć
Even better (in my opinion!..It's Ok to think the other way =) )
- Keep the audio cable from the REV 2 to your input just as you have it now
- run a USB from your CPU to the USB on your REV 2
- I assume you already got a USB from your MIDI controller to your cpu?!
- Create a software instrument track i Logic and choose "External Instrument" as your instrument (it's under "UTILITY")
- Then Choose "REV2" under "MIDI Destination" (i think it's named so?!)
- And choose input: "input 1" if that's where you hooked up your audio cable from the REV 2?
Now this is a track that both plays and returns sound from your REV2. In other words it's just like your REV 2 is like any other software instrument. Hope I explained this right.
Thatâs definitely an option, the way my bedroom is set up I like controlling my prophet from my midi controller because I switch back and forth from software synths and it :)
dope
Thanks!
@@markbergsound maybe rename this video as this doesn't only apply to the prophet. You'll get more views.
nosalez thatâs a good idea, done n done thx đ
A question, why does your prophet only have 4 voices? Itâs an 8 voice synth at minimum
I misspoke, it has 8 voices but my patch was layered so I was using two voices per note so could only play 4 notes at a time.
how come your rev 2 only has 4 voices?
I misspoke it does have 8 voices, I just have a 2 layer stack going on a lot of my patches so it uses 2 voices per key.
Make a new default might correct the problem
Your Prophet has at least 8 voices. Mine is a 16.
I misspoke it does have 8 voices, I just have a 2 layer stack going on a lot of my patches so it uses 2 voices per key.
Why do you find hardware more conducive to creativity
Anytime I can get my eyes off a screen and just listen with my ears is a win for me! Everyoneâs different but having the tactile feel of a real synth canât be beat imho.
3:50 That's actually low pass filtering, not high pass. You're letting pass through only the low frequencies. High pass is the opposite. Thanks for the video.
Yup already got called out on that, slip of the tongue! Ha but glad the video helped :)
@@markbergsound I figured you knew what it was but just misspoke. Thought I'd clear it up for the watchers who aren't familiar with that language. Thanks again!
bros mewing
lol
It's kinda ridiculous to skip the keyboard on the actual keyboard of the Pro Rev2 in favor of that cheap junk keyboard controllerđ€Ł
The Dave Smith is a proper legit synth keyboard with full size semi weighted keys AND a full scale.
Theres no need for both.
Don't know why you wouldn't use the Pro rev2 as the master keyboard as well as using as a DAW triggered sound module đ
Totally agree with you, I have definitely changed up my workflow since this video. That being said at the time I programmed a ton of drums using drum pads on my mpk and my prophet didnât have those so it was just a workflow preference. Ideal setup is prophet as the main midi controller and have a side small midi drum pad controller as well. But ya I still used all the nice tactile knobs of my prophet to re-record the audio back in so was best of both worlds for me at the time.
8 voices.
Yup
