- In December 2018 we wwoofed in Australia. WWOOF stands for Willing Workers On Organic Farms or World Wide Opportunities On Organic Farms. We worked in Adelaide, Melbourne & Canberra.
The deal is working on a farm 4-6 hours daily in exchange for food and accommodation.
This is a great way to travel and save money- especially if-like us- you’re on a budget. It’s also a great way to meet locals and experience “the real Aussie lifestyle”.
Like anything else we had a great time with some families and a terrible time with others.
Some families we’re really stingy with food. They told us we are too much and told us we could only eat a quarter of one banana a day so that it lasts for 3 days.
This video is for any traveller or backpacker who is willing to experience something different but we also want to warn you that it is not all gold that glitters.
As a prospective host, I think it would have been nice to, at a minimum, send a follow up letter to the host you left early, explaining why you felt uncomfortable staying. You all had expectations and they weren’t met. It is no simple task to prepare your home for two strangers to move in for a few weeks, feed them and organize work for them. More food is a simple agreement that could have been arranged if you had communicated your desire/expectation.

Good morning WWOOFers and future WWOOFers, we have just watched this travelling with MaP Video and would like to point out to anyone currently WWOOFing or thinking about WWOOFing in Australia.
1./We strongly suggest you read the WWOOFer Guidelines wwoof.com.au/volunteer/#guidelines and our Terms and Conditions before you join, so you understand your obligations and ours.
2./ Make sure you understand as quoted on our website:
*4-6 hours per day maximum. Please note it is a maximum of 38 hours in any 7 days. Schedule is worked out between you and the Host. - So make sure when you arrive at your Host Farm and filling in your information on the WWOOF Guest Book Form required by all our Hosts that you discuss and ask as many questions during this induction time (you can also ask them prior to your arrival, which we encourage, what a typical day would be)
3./ WWOOF Australia has a very good complaints procedure and our only wish is that MaP had of picked up the phone during this time not after the fact. We have been going for 38 years and pride ourselves on customer service. So please any WWOOFers out there or if you are planning to WWOOF think about in great detail what WWOOFing is, it is not just a way to travel around Australia cheap, we have Hosts in many different industries that would like to share their knowledge and in exchange hopefully you can share some with them.

Glad I watched this - really clarified things.
This was a good video, with some very good examples of the type of work you have been doing. I don't know anything about the WOOF website, but I assume you can give feedback on your experiences, good and bad, so that your fellow travellers aren't subjected to the same kind of experience you suffered, the starvation diet, or being to work like trojans.
It is interesting that you aren't prepared to tell host families exactly why you feel forced to move on because of food rationing or unreasonable work demands. Also fortunate that you are travelling as a couple, in which case I would be interested to know what work your partner is offered, Pablo.

Think about it this way: if you are working 4-6 hours per day on farms and in exchange you receive food and accommodation then wouldn’t you want to eat for what you technically worked for?
