Had to read "The Jungle" at age 14 about the horrors of the industrial revolution. It had:
- A woman being assaulted by her employer under threat of losing her job
- Dying in childbirth to her second child, calling out in pain and fear to her husband who refused to even look at her because he thought she was willingly cheating on him and the child wasn't his.
- Her younger brother being eaten alive by rats because he fell asleep on the clock and got locked in the factory.
- The husband and wife's first child playing in puddles after rain and jumping in a pot hole so deep he got sucked in and drowned. No body was ever recovered.
- The wife's mother and sister being forced into prostitution and drug addictions to make ends meet because every male they could rely on was dead, and the husband had run away because he couldn't handle everything.
And one of the questions on the test? Asked us what the price of cherries was.
Even the teacher admitted that no one ever got that question correct, and only one of my classmates did because he went and asked the older students about the test. Only reason we had to deal with all that crap was because the principal used to be a history teacher and he loved the book and refused to change the test despite knowing the results every year.
