Leave Her Johnny | The Longest Johns | Mass Choir Community Video Project

- We originally hoped for 100 submissions for this project... When almost 500 turned up, we had to rethink our plans! It's so amazing to watch this video and see the faces of people still keeping Folk Music and Sea Shanties alive all around the globe! A huge thank you to everyone who took part, and remember to keep singing! Hopefully this video gives you a bit of optimism for the future at the end of such a dreary year.
Back in 2019, we had the idea to sing a song with as many of our fans as we could. When 2020 hit, it seemed like the perfect time to do it! Since we got way more submissions that we expected, we ended up having to delay the video's release until NOW!

Lyrics
Oh, the times were hard and the wages are low,
(Leave her, Johnny, leave her!)
I guess it's time for us to go,
(And it's time for us to leave her!)
Beware these packet ships, I say!
(Leave her, Johnny, leave her!)
They'll steal your stores and your clothes away
(And it's time for us to leave her!)
{Chorus}
Leave her, Johnny, leave her
Oh leave her, Johnny, leave her
For the voyage is done, and the winds don't blow
and it's time for us to leave her
There's Liverpool Pat in his tarpaulin hat
(Leave her, Johnny, leave her!)
And Yankee John the pocket rat
(And it's time for us to leave her!)
She would not wear and she would not stay
(Leave her, Johnny, leave her!)
She shipped great seas both night and day
(And it's time for us to leave her!)
{Chorus}
It's rotten beef and weevil-y bread,
(Leave her, Johnny, leave her!)
It was pump or drown the old man said,
(And it's time for us to leave her!)
The sails all furled, our work is done,
(Leave her, Johnny, leave her!)
and now ashore we'll take our run
(And it's time for us to leave her!)
{Chorus til Finish}

Realizing that "her" is a ship that johnny and his crew is sailing on and that their adventure is ending with no choice to leave her (The ship) to move on with their lives is legit even sadder
As I who got fond of Black flag, this really hit me hard
Everybody loves a good ol boat. Like dogs, seeing one suffer or die brings nothing but pain to our hearts.

why were you watching a music video while deaf?
@@aqswd6825They could be partially deaf, which would allow them to hear a bit, but it's still considered being deaf. They could have a cochlear implant which is a device that can allow them to hear. They can still see, so they could have captions on and still enjoy the song. A few of my friends are deaf and one of the coolest things I've seen is they hooked up a subwoofer so they could play music and feel the vibrations from the beat as they watch music videos.
"Partially deaf" is usually referred to as "hard of hearing"
@@bowserjrrules8162 I know it can also depend on how severe the hearing loss is, or how they choose to refer to it themselves. That's the only reason I included it; but yes, I understand it's usually referred to as "hard of hearing".
In all seriousness, this is one of the more beautiful things to have come out of lockdown. Weirdly nostalgic of that era.

Now. Me too
I went on a cruise a long time ago as a kid during the middle of the school year, so there were only about 7 teens in total on a cruise full of people. We all became really fast friends despite our different backgrounds. We got up to all sorts of trouble in the 7 days the cruise went for, so much that the staff would just smile and shake their heads and let us do whatever it was we were scheming. There was one kid who took a ukelele with him everywhere and oftentimes we'd all sing sea shanties together since some of the kids were really into assassins creed. This was one of the main songs we sung and I always remember how hard it hit us singing it on the last day of the cruise when we knew we'd probably never see each other again.
To this day I dont think ill ever have such a great group of friends and its bittersweet remembering the time spent on the boat. But at the end of the day it was time for us to leave her and go our separate ways.
Very awesome project. I loved seeing how diverse the singers were from all ages and different walks of life. It reminded me a lot of my old friends and brought back fond memories, thank you ♥

This is why I love shanties so much
You have a shanty man singing actual lyrics, but the chorus is easy to remember and repeats a lot, and you can get so many voices involved in the true majority of the song
The big harmonic chorus literally only says "leave her Johnny leave her/for the voyage is done and the winds don't blow/and it's time for us to leave her" over and over again, but it's still beautiful idgaf
I've also heard so many different lyrics to this song, whatever will fit really, but the chorus is always the same, so it's always adaptable
Same with drunken sailor
Just had the biggest breakup of my life. Shit is hard and then YT recommends this song out of nowhere.

As a church choir boy for years, I can attest--the power of a chorus is that it doesn't matter how YOU might feel about your singing ability. People aren't going to hear you. They're going to hear ALL of you. The choir holds each other up. And when you get that harmony, that just-so timed power of hundreds of voices singing in unison, there is nothing else humanity has ever invented that sounds as powerful.
This is true, when my chore gets something right I just get pumped because I can hear just how great we did, it's beautiful.

It's probably because of the egalitarian nature of this piece. A thousand people banding together to sing a sea shanty, representing the morale boost we desperately need in this time, is definitely better than some day show hosts I don't know singing Imagine.

One of my players stood up after the song and asked the ale house who would go with them to Twilight Island where the hobgoblins make base and wipe them out. This is heart-warmingly beautiful and sad now. I hope the world changes for the better soon for all our sakes.
@@kotori87gaming89 That's exactly where I'm at! The overnights are on Balclutha now. Also I go to the shanty sings every month as well! Hopefully we'll all be able to sing again soon
Oh gosh I want to do this so bad
If only someone sung this to Johnny Depp before it was too late
Fr tho
Thanks for the laugh, bro :)

Thats my world. I do not care if its hip or not. Those are my brethren and sisters.
Imagine if everyone in the court stood up and started singing this the moment Johnny Depp won the case
It would've been the highlight of the century
The fact that this is the last song I heard in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag before I stopped playing the game, really hits me so hard right now.
I just started playing Black Flag for the first time- I think I’m about a quarter of a way through- and I’m low key dreading finishing because I’m enjoying it so much. The shanties make it nostalgic for experiences I’ve never had- I can’t wait to come across this one. Pretty powerful stuff.
@@thecryptidGrey Oh boy,, you're in for the treat. Do let me know what you think about the end.
@@D3emonic I’m enjoying it incredibly so far, if you say I’m in for a treat, I can’t wait! And I’ll do my best to remember- I’ll certainly be returning to this video, so I should. Have a good day!
I still remember the last time I embarked for the high seas...😢
especially because the song is about a man having to leave behind a ship he sailed on for a long time for good
I think if Johnny doesn't get the message now, he never will!
Johnny can’t leave the thotty

Hats off to the kind lady singing in sign language. 🤟
I think that's a dude
Oh
Hands down, they were totally op
Theres 3 girls doing sign language
There’s a few
All these people singing in sign language are absolute legends.
I'd love to see a reedit with at least one of those awesome folks on screen throughout. As it was, it was a heart-warming sight.
Why?
At the OVFF convention, they have a wonderful signer (Judi) for all the concerts. There is video of her signing while Michael Loncor sings "If I could be a flying monkey" that I swear is one of the best things on CZcams.
I thought they were sending out mad piratey gang signs
I was scrolling through the comments hoping to find one that talked about the ones who sung in sign language. I'm so glad I did
Good timing to be in my recommended for Johnny Depp's win in court!
“The winds whipped up and the seas ran high, leave her, Johnny, leave her! Oh, she shipped it green and none went by, and it’s time for us to leave her!”
This is what a crew is. THIS shit is what being a human is about. There is power in the united voice, and that power can sink ships and rock mountains.
couldn’t agree more. the voices sre powerfull aligned.
And mankid united can reach far beyond the stars. If we just WOULD unite.
not to mention crumbling city walls, should stories be believed.
Especially in the Dovahzul.
(I've been replaying Skyrim recently, that's all that's on my mind right now.)
Yes, but can it convince Johnny to leave her?
whoever hit that high note on the last "and its time for us to leave her" deserves a goddam medal

Oh My Johnny God, this is the most pure beauty of a song out there.
In 2022, this is perfect😂
I am a sailor IRL. I've been on quite a few deployments and done my duty at sea. Now I teach new sailors how to do their jobs, but soon I'll be heading back out again. This song cannot possibly encompass all of one's feelings at the end of a voyage, but it's the closest you'll ever get without spending six months at sea. Two thumbs up from me!
What's up shipmate, I'm also a sailor. What's your rate? I'm a Nuc (MMN)
I was part of a security detail in 2013 for a ship off the Ivory Coast. Nothing was more depressing than getting stuck on a ship thousands of miles away from home with guns and ammo. But after getting comfortable with the crew. Best time of my life. Getting told your purpose is to sit on a ship with a rifle hoping for pirates to try to board sucks. Your CO in your ear, telling you “if we stop anything on this job we all walk away with money “ isn’t fun. I wasn’t military, I was an employee of a contracting/bounty hunting firm. But once you meet these life long sea men, it changes everything. The fun these guys have on their off time was unrivaled.
I had a 30 foot wooden sailing boat, I crossed the English Channel in a force 8 to 9 and I was convinced she would break apart any second. She took every bit of the 8 hour pounding and didn't even spring a leak. I sold her a year later and it was not until after she had gone that it hit me. I genuine grief - that little boat had kept me alive when the weather turned bad. Not like an airbag going off in a crash, she fought for hour after hour, creaking and groaning, but hanging in there...
so I can fully understand where you are coming from, in my own way...
Everytime we did line handlers coming into Port, my line would sing this song, among others.
Strange mix of emotions isn’t it? You’re happy to come home but so sad to leave your mates and your other, adopted home. Well that’s how I always feel anyway. (Unless it was a bad crew, in which case, the sooner I’m home the happier I am!)

This was actually really humbling. So many people, men and women, elders and teens, deaf folks and even a cat. So perfectly synchronized.

@@mathewshewan3948 typical cat behavior😒
Not just a cat, it's a Spanish 'gato' 😊
There was a dog as well. 🥳
From a sailor (me): This is a quite an accurate portrayal of how sailors view their job as there's a love/hate relationship with sailing. On one hand there's the beauty of being at sea and travelling to new places but on the other hand theres a disdain for the long stints at sea. the bad food and the sadness of leaving loved ones behind. it's an old song but still rings true for those at sea.
thanks for sharing ,have a good one
Man, if your name is actually Shane MacDonald, you're as much of a sailor as one can be
And cheers to that
You a Sailor or a sailor?
I think the song is originally about a ship that was not repairable but I see what you mean
from what I've heard, it's not just sailors who have that same relationship: soldiers and Marines want nothing more to be home when stationed overseas, but when they're home, they want to be with their brothers (and sisters), even though it'd mean they'd have bullets flying overhead
The Borg: "Resistance is Futile."
Humanity: "Leave her, Johnny."
I can never get enough of this song and this performance. I cry over the story and the beauty of this performance every single time. This video means a lot to me. Thank you, Longest Johns, for creating this masterpiece.

@@Nessixify there are different sign languages for different dialects basically
I’m curious, which language do you speak? I’m currently studying American Sign Language but I’ve also heard of BSL and Aslan. I’m having a little trouble identifying which languages were used in the video.
@@Nessixify there are different sign languages, but none of them translate directly word-for-word into spoken language very well--the grammar and structure is very different. So, especially for music and poetry, people aren't looking up each individual word and replacing it with a synonymous sign, but rather finding an interpretation they feel captures the spirit and meaning of the original, also taking into account rhythm and musicality. So naturally, you get a lot of different versions!
