- Formed in 1981 in Osaka, Japan, Shonen Knife is an acclaimed punk-rock band known for its idiosyncratic songs with positive lyrics centered around animals, food, and fun. A best-kept-secret of underground-rock fans throughout the '80s, the all-female band's music was introduced to new audiences in 1991 when Kurt Cobain invited them to be the opening act for Nirvana's UK tour supporting the album Nevermind. Remarkably, Shonen Knife has released 21 studio albums, the most recent being 2019's Sweet Candy Power. While on a Houston tour stop, the band visited Skyline Sessions to record "Buttercup (I'm a Super Girl)" from the Powerpuff Girls soundtrack, the title single from Sweet Candy Power, and the SK classic "Banana Chips."

Shonen knife still kicking hard and punky, poppy and solid rock. Best japanese band in this old man's opinion. Rock and Roll hall of fame anyone?
I'll put in Loudness too, although they were metal but this song has a charm on its own...the bridge part on 2:06...
OMG for sure they belong! Should have been in over 20 years ago. You know with every obvious exclusion the RRHoF loses all credibility for me.
Long overdue. Super rock legends! As old as The Smiths FFS!
My 6 year old has just discovered The Powerpuff Girls, so I just played the "Buttercup" video for her & she LOVED it. She asked me to play it again & I put this video on & she also loved it. She said: "They're all girls!", which she thought was absolutely great.
Thank you for showing generations of girls how to rock out.
Would have been approved by Johnny Ramone. 🎸🎤👍
@TART 140 BPM Experimental this song is sampled from "blitzkrieg bop" :)
@@BiggestHaterEVER It's got the same slight off-tempo change between the G and the A instead of playing everything in perfect 4's. Shonen Knife were heavily influenced by the great Ramones.
Johnny wouldn't have been crazy about the up and down strumming, but he would have loved the song.
I love this song from the Powerpuff Girls. You three ladies freaking rock!!!
Sounds just like in the record!
When i was a little kid this was one of my favorite songs on the PPG soundtrack. Thank you for all the memories!!!
Holy smoke, they can STILL do the song!
I Love Naoko!!! She and Shonen Knife belong in the Hall of Fame.
Totally Agree. The fact that they are not is proof that the Hall of Fame is corrupt!!!
this beautiful women made my childhood so happy!!!!
I went to see Shonen Knife when they supported Nirvana at the Glasgow University Queen Margaret Union in 1991…I went along specifically to tape Shonen Knife’s performance, and once they were done I buggered off! I couldn’t care less about Nirvana at the time!
If I’d known then what I know now, I’d have stayed and taped Nirvana too!
But hey ho! I got what I wanted at the time!
I seen these Awesome dudettes Perform in Springfield, Illinois during the Free Concert back in sep of 2019, around my birthday. They rocked ! I hope i get to see them perform again 😩 🙏🏾
They're in my top five all time favorite bands. The rankings in my "top ten" always varies through the years, (moods) but they are ALWAYS IN THE TOP FIVE.
I love the drummer's hair
This was my jam when I was little girl! It’s how I became a fan of this group! ❤️
Time has taken its toll on their voices, but damn, they still as good with the instrumental as they were back then.
I love how the drummer is having the time of her life, lol.
hours before they hit the stage at the white oak music hall met Naoko Atsuko and Risa that night ......... excellent show
roots of power puff !!!!!
I saw them perform in a Hardee's parking lot on that tour. Great show!
Súper canción. Súper chicas Shonen Knife. Saludos desde Chile al otro lado del mundo en Latinoamérica. Diciembre 2021. I love you Shonen Knife.
La sonrisa de la baterista me rejuvenece a cada segundo jaja
They still got it!
First heard the gals in 1986, then again in 89 when i really started following them. Amazing band and even more amazing spirit!
Killer band, one of the best bands ever
They still play this song...so awesome!
Damn ❤❤❤
😢😢My child hood........😍
holy shit they still totally have it, I love this
Blitzkrieg Bop
This song is so nostalgic! It's one of those songs that you try to sing along to but it chokes you up lol
Agreed, I had a disc back in like 2000 early 90's full of the cartoon network "groovies"( if you remember that, if you were born in that time) and this song was one that I always played.
@@BiggestHaterEVER oh WOW, they had a CD with those?! That's so cool that you had that! I loved watching those so much back when they showed em on tv. It would have made finding Pain (the band that played the JabberJaw "groovies" song) much easier lol
Another really good PPG Groovies song is Signal in the Sky.
Most underrated band ever!
Rockin ladies who made a cool song from the classic ppg series
I don't think their cuteness will ever die
Love them all.

The GREATEST MUSIC ERA in Cartoon Network's History of the First Decade (2000's) era of the 21st Century.
Excelente 🤘 como rockean de bieeenn! La infancia de millones de personas
XOXO!!!
This video shows how short they all are, Naoko is about five feet. I remember seeing them for the first time and doing a double take at how tiny they were.
Estas chicas formaron una de las mejores canciones que me acompañaron en mi infancia, las amo gracias por hacer mi infancia Feliz.
Saludos desde Colombia 🇨🇴
Recuerdo está canción en los comerciales de Cartoon network, ಥ‿ಥ
The Osaka Ramones.

❤😁
shonen knife are super girls!
0 dislikes, that made me happy, I'd be pretty pissed if mfs disliked such a sweet song.
I thought the same one who voiced blossom, Cathy Cavadini was the one who sang it because she sounds like blossom also the one singing
#imissSK 😇
🤟❤
🤟🤘
i love 2:07 - 2:17 ☺️
Yeah Atsuko was a great drummer and she's an even better bass player
No but’s an homage. They’re awesome. Imagine 3 girls in Japan loved Ramones
Music that much
🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
2:05
Like shonen knife japanese song for ppg
I love these girls so much. Does anybody know - is that a Daisy Rock she's playing?
thank you for this
😎🤘🏾🤟🏾.
I remember waiting for Cartoon Network to air their music video of this song back then
Is it supposed to sound exactly like Blitzkreig Bop? Cause it does.
Almost, not exactly
SK are highly influenced by the Ramones... she probably asked permission, as they were all friends and even toured together
Oh my god i'm so glad i'm not the only one who thinks this
@@andrade2129 "almost" it sounds exactly alike. What is different is the quality of the song. This was made not in the 70's so the music is way more clear because of the new recording technology.
Didn't the girl playing bass here, Atsuko, use to be the drummer? That trips me out. Actually i think the two playing guitar are sisters. I wish Michie was still in the band!
I like to fight fight!
0:31
singer is such a cutie woman
Naoko (pronounced Now-Ko) Yamano , bass player is her little sister, Atsuko and the drummer is Risa Kawano, also of Brinky
Someone knows which chords they used in the guitar?
Nenek2 kuh okem
I miss 👦 🔪 live
