I love his style. He’s fabulous! Especially his fairytales, summer, winter, autumn… Dialogues from the depths of heroes’ souls, atmosphere of freedom, freedom of choice. And some absolutely unexpected surprises with a sort of happy end, like in winter fairytale. It gives a hope for a sense of life.

Éric Rohmer is a director whose work I admire greatly. I’ve seen ten of his movies so far and here’s how I rank them:
1. Boyfriends and Girlfriends (1987)
2. Love in the Afternoon (1972)
3. The Green Ray (1986)
4. My Night at Maud’s (1969)
5. The Aviator’s Wife (1981)
6. Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle (1987)
7. Claire’s Knee (1970)
8. Rendezvous in Paris (1995)
9. The Collector (1967)
10. The Sign of Leo (1962)
The Aviator’s Wife was my introduction and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve seen Boyfriends and Girlfriends four times and it’s my number 2 favorite film of all time. (First is Michael Haneke’s Caché.) Once you fall in love with Rohmer’s filmography as much as I did, your life is changed for the better. I’ve become much more comfortable being vulnerable with people, and that’s largely due to watching his movies.

Rohmer is only ‘like watching paint dry’ if you are a moron who plays video games all day and think that The Fast & Furious franchise is the epitome of great cinematic art. Ironically, for me watching a Vin Diesel film ( *any* Vin Diesel film) is like watching a man watching paint dry. As a wise person said: I’d rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full-frontal lobotomy. Rohmer’s vintage is very productive indeed.
