Iâm so happy to see this emphasis on rhythm (and drive), No mistake that the banjo incorporates a drum head. Most clawhammer players I encounter ignore the rhythm role of the banjo and simply try to play all the notes the fiddler is playing. The rhythm of the banjo is essential to get the old time groove.
Looking forward to this! Thanks so much for having me :) I love being part of the Truefire family!
I love the percussive side of clawhammer banjo. Your technique is new to me. I commonly strike the head with my thumb (a thumb whap), but never use my strumming fingers to hit the head. Can you comment on the advantages, if any, of whapping with my strumming fingers rather than just my thumb ? Thanks for your contributions to the world of clawhammer banjo !
Hello Brad! Love this lesson! Just discovered you on the Tim Cummings album, "The Birds' Flight," that was recommended by a friend, and that I just purchased. I've already written down all the banjo tunings on the album and will be diving in to learn a few of those great tunes!
Good video, I'll have to give the claw hammer try
