It was popularized by Merle Haggard and Buck Owens of HeeHaw fame. Dwight Yoakum paid homage to it in the 1980’s by covering the song “Streets of Bakersfield”. It influenced the rock country and outlaw country genres. Yes Bakersfield is in California, but it is not Hollywood. It is a working man’s town and region. A lot of Okies and Texans moved there during the Dust Bowl and brought their music traditions with them. There are a lot of country music fans in California and a lot of country singers are from there. Besides Merle Haggard and Buck Owens, Jon Pardi, Brett Young, and Cam are modern country singers from there.
He is not poor Blake! He is actually loved and adored by millions. All of his songs are really good and are even favored by thoese who don't listen to country music.
