      I appreciate the compliment on my Vietnamese...I think my dad is still not quite as use to being filmed, but him and I talk a lot more comfortably off camera

    I make com tam a few times per month at home for my family. Everyone loves it. My dad has made me promise to take him yo eat in in February

    How cool that your dad visited you and that he was open to the culture, food and language. I have to go home to see my folks, and I only live a few hour's flight away, but both of us have to fight to get to the airports (westcoast). The hardest part is getting to Seatac and LAX, or anywhere in Socal.

    "Ghiền" means Addicted of something. "Ba" means Brother-3 or Bro./Amigo. "Ba' also means Dad. This dish must be that good to be addicted to.

    Com tam is the favorite dish of the Cheveriers, Dustin's parents. They found a very good com tam restaurant in Little Saigon near LA.

      @@BigTimeBentley , sorry, Dustin did mention it, and showed the name very quickly. You could ask Trang to look at the video. It is not the first restaurant, but the second one. They said it was the best com tam, nearly as good as what they had in Vietnam.

      Actually, that's Dustin's dad's favorite. His mom likes it, too, but his mom liked bun cha better, if I remember correctly when his parents visited Vietnam.

      @@ln3995 yo @BigTimeBentley I just googled the place that was suggested, it looks dank af. gotta be one of the best in OC. have you taken your dad to eat Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio (Charbroiled Pork & Eggrolls with vermicelli noodles)? as an Americanized Vietnamese, i'm quite the expert at easy go to meals for non-Vietnamese people 😂 the hardest part about learning new foods is the first experience, because for me it's hard to really enjoy on the first go around, but the 2nd time i like to dive in and go for it as I kinda got the gist and am ready to try with training wheels off.

    Your Dad will be looking for all the Com Tam places when he gets back to the USA. You know what they say, once you tastes Com Tam, you can never live without in your life at lease once every few months. I don't know what I like better Com Tam or Bahn Cuon, but I have got to have one of them once every couple of months in the USA.

Dustin introduced his parents to com tam in Saigon, so now they are driving all over Little Saigon in southern california looking for com tam places to eat back home. They are addicted to com tam even in the usa.

    0:13 Ghiền means being addicted. Ba in this context is 3rd in family standing (but in actuallity, it is 2nd in standing, because 1st in standing starts at “hai” which is 2, but I digress). So Ba Ghiền means the shop is run by Mr/Ms #3 who is actually 2nd oldest, and the foods are very addictive 😉😵‍💫🤪

      You can ask them to cut the meat for you. They'll be willing to do so. Normally they'll cut the cutlet for you even you don't ask. 😊

      probably...but I think a bit of the staple and the signature of the dish is the small pellets of broken rice

      Nope...the cookef full grain rice is usually too wet for the dish ...cooked broken rice has to be dry enough to absorb the scallion oil, juice from the grilled pork, running egg yolk and fish sauce dressing ...the dish goes to another level....heavenly

    Tip for crossing street in Vietnam:
    Many tourist foreigners scared of traffic in VN . Don’t worry about it! The rule to win this fear is keep routin slowly walking when you across the streams of motobike! motor-bykers knows how to avoid you themself in chaos-order! remmember do not run and stop suddently , accident immidiatly ! Don’t be affraid off and do it if you want to be safety in the crazy- rule traffic in Vietnam.😂

    Ghiền is addiction because they put crack in it 😂😂😂...i kid i kid... the meal is a favourite among the common people made for the common people. I eat it more than phở whenever i go to the phở store.

    Actually, "Tấm " is not the broken rices,it is the Germs (embryo) of the rices. People has miss-used the term "Tấm " for so long, now, city people don't even know that .

      @@BigTimeBentley The Germ is the first thing that fall off the rice during the process of whitening rice (Milling). These germs are the most tastiest part of the rices. They are usually collected to be used in the house, or given as gift.
