I remember my first Christmas in a faraway town, 3000km (2000 miles) from my family in 1995. A couple from the local church invited me to be their "stand in Aunt". They also invited an elderly couple to be "grandparents" for the day. At first I said, "No - I don't want to intrude on my family celebration", but she insisted, "Believe me, it will be far better if you're there - my usually gruff husband will put on a happy face if we have visitors".
It was great. Since then, whenever I have been alone for a holiday, I have always invited lonely people to come. #BeTheDifference!

Thursday will be my first Thanksgiving alone. Grandparents are gone...uncle is gone...earlier this year...Mom left. I am alone.
