      It’s probably also school, talking with many people and being put into situations where you have to speak their language. As adults, a lot of people speak English so if you don’t know sth, you’ll just quickly switch to English to explain. As kids, you don’t usually have that option. Might not be a big difference, but it adds up.
      But especially the socializing; talking helps the most when learning :D

    Grayson gets a huge compliment from me, too! Klingt spitze! And yes, total immersion. It feels like it’s so slow and then one day you suddenly realise how much you can say and understand. Just don’t worry about mistakes when speaking. When writing in German, that’s the time to make sure everything is perfect, but people make mistakes even in their mother tongue, and people also say, no, it’s like this or that in every language. The point is to get your mouth and brain expressing what you want to say, quickly and then you can build on that.

    • @LaureninGermany
      @LaureninGermany Před 2 lety +1

      Longer than it should have because a lot of people spoke English to me and I let them. So I honestly cannot say. But my biggest tip is to watch German TV and films (not dubbed from English because they have to speak too fast). A great start is the most brilliant 4-parter (it’s a film, actually) about Ludwig II and Neuschwanstein, which you can find here on CZcams, subtitled in English, on a channel called German Period Dramas. (I’ll check the channel and edit if it’s wrong)

  • @RustyDust101
    @RustyDust101 Před 2 lety +5

    Wow, Grayson totally blew me away. Again. He even adopted something of a Bavarian "Klangbild" in German. This is not a dialect. Literally translated, a "sound-picture". It is neither an accent nor a dialect, because his German was perfect high German (Hochdeutsch). But the cadence, the slight difference in where the focus of inflections are placed is slightly, just a teensy slightly bit different from for example the Klangbild here in Hamburg, even when someone here speaks Hochdeutsch as well. It is sooo fascinating for me to see how he has developed within such a short time.
    BTW: not that this is bad, not in the slightest bit. It is just barely noticeable if you listen very very closely and you have lived in different regions of Germany for some time. It is only fascinating how he has picked this up. Amazing!
    Nope, the slightly elongated 'joooaaa' is pretty universal in German colloquial speech. While it might be slightly more used in the south, it will not be a 'betraying' sign of your origin. 😀
    BTW: Sara, that "Weißwurst" was almost a perfect Bavarian pronunciation of it. You definitely picked up on that as well. 😀👍
    Just for Kevin's dad jokes:
    Grayson is 10 now, so legally, under your direct supervision he can try a Weißbier at 14, if he wants to. He can legally buy and consume it at 16 himself, without adult supervision. At 18 anything goes.
    He has picked up the German humor already. He picked up on the literal question of travel in the past year (in 2022) and threw the answer back at ya. Nice! Good going, Grayson! 🤣
    There's the joke that there are more clubs in Germany than there are German citizens. While not technically true, Germans absolutely looooove their Vereine / clubs. So becoming a member of a club is probably one of the easiest ways (except meeting other parents at the playground when your kids are there) to meet up and make friendships with Germans. Good for you that you decided to pick up on that tip!
    Total immersion: perfect! That is the first thing you should try. Not live in your own bubble, but expand it as far as possible. BTW: is the German grandma the one Sara commented on in one of her earliest videos after you arrived here that she had this beautiful garden? It would be sooo great to hear that talking with her about some horticulture could have opened up a friendly contact.
    You guys will do absolutely fine, and your advances are definitely highly noticeable. Keep it up, you will succeed, I am certain.

    In case you want to improve your spoken German, there is a scheme called „Sprach-Tandem“ in Germany. You advertise (Facebook, black board in a store or a school) for a tandem and find a partner. You meet or call once a week and she/he speaks English to you and you answer in German. If the other person makes a mistake it is corrected by the native speaker. Win-win.

    Hey guys, I did enjoy your video as always, you had some good points there.
    It is clear that Grayson has a knack for languages, not only learning the grammar and words but also the intonation, dialect and so on, that's great to see. Talent and hard work are definitely paying off but as you already said, so does the complete immersion in the culture. I think you can learn a great deal from "the outside" but will only truly develop language skills similar to a native if you are surrounded by it. I had the biggest learning effects when I spent two weeks on my own in Ireland. A very short time but speaking and hearing English all the time and having to communicate to get by is helping so much. And you quickly realize it's okay if it's not perfect as long as you speak at all :D, something schools should apply too... I remember being super afraid of speaking in class as I could not speak a single word without being corrected or overly criticized.
    I also have some questions/ topics for your next videos maybe?:
    - Having lived in Sveden and France, what are the main differences to living in Germany?
    - How did you learn French? Was the process of learning the language and immersing into the culture easier or harder than with German?
    - Are the kids taking English classes for natives outside of school? How are their English teachers at school dealing with them?
    - How are people in your everyday life (grocery store, doctors and so on) reacting to you? Are they patient or did you face any discriminatory behaviour?

    Only 1 year ago and your german is SO good, you all can be really proud of what you reached in that short time! Keep up doing that great work, it´s so much fun to watch your slice of life videos. One thing what´s funny, is that you only named bavarian food(understandably), I wonder when you´ll see other parts of german and taste the food there. Hope the whole traveling will be easier again in future. Best wishes

    Your german is amazing and the kids sound almost native and can already switch easily which will help them in their future, even with learning new languages. You went all in and it shows in amazing progress.
    You definitely hear the rural bavarian influences in the childrens’ german and yours too which really is an interesting aspect of languages. I love the way the accents sneak in, it keeps language unique and diverse within the language.
    I just love the variety in german and even within the region there are unique aspects to every village and family and person that culminates in a unique speaking pattern for everyone. Sometimes even a unique body language based on those influences.

    Another way to learn German is to watch the TV. not TV shows or movies but something like German gameshows, standup comedy, trash shows (its embarassing to mention this, but you do learn a few things in there), etc. since you learn how germans naturally converse with each other and not reading from script. You also pick up alot of phrases and slangs that they normally don‘t do in Tv shows or movies.

    A great video! Und Grayson, Dein Deutsch ist schon sehr, sehr gut! Weiter so!
    When I was learning English, music helped me a lot! I wanted to be able to sing songs I liked and I wanted to know what the songs were expressing, saying. So I looked up the lyrics, translated them or searched for a translation and I listened to the song until I could sing it. Of course this is easier with English songs - simply because there are like uncountable songs of every genre out there. But if you search a bit I'm sure you can find German songs you like, too.
    Songs are a great way to learn how to "play" with a language.

    Jo! is typical bavarian....and Graysons german is brilliant!!!
    Kids learn so fast. But your german has improved also a lot.
    When I learned english in school here in Germany, I had a deal with my mom, who was a fluent speaker as well. The deal was to speak one hour a day only english- no matter what. My skills went up rapidly. To learn a language, speaking is the most important, even if it is the intimidating german language. Speak. Make mistakes. Your reward will be progress.

    Thank you for sharing another great video. So much fun to see how far you've all come in learning German - especially you Sara! Grayson sounds like he was born into the language. He also seems like the engineer, like Dad. I'd get along with Grayson. I'm trying to learn some German for my trip this summer and have several apps. Some of which I've paid for. I also view Easy German and will check out DW. It's so easy to find resources and apps to learn a language now that it's become stressful to figure out which one is best! Also what is the area @20:49? So beautiful!
