My idle growing up as s kid. To me, Mr. Winfield was the most underrated player during the 80's. People don't talk enough about him. One of the top five greatest athletes to ever play sports. Period. Absolute gentleman. Thanks for the hard work and determination over the years.

So true, when they list the Deion Sanders and Bo Jacksons of the world as the greatest all time athletes...Dave Winfield is wrongfully left out. People forget that this guy certainly could have flourished in football and baskeball as well....but I'm glad he choose baseball. Tough to play 20+ years in the other sports

Big Dave was a class act and a great human , Him and Mattingly were my favorites....

Don't forget, after leaving the Padres after the 1980 season, he batted a whopping .045 in the 1981 World Series.

@@TH3DANKs He also hit .350 in the ALDS that year, bet you didn't know that. It wasn't his fault that would be the only year the Yankees would make the playoffs. A little over 8 years he spent with the Yankees averaging 25 homers a year, 100 plus rbis and .290 average while playing top notch right field...and all people talk about is one slumping world series.

@@mikeshoe74 : You are spot on with your retort: Mr. May, Dave Winfield.

I started watching the sport in the early 80's. A Yankees fan, and when I first saw him, he looked like he was drawn up in a comic book....just larger than life. An intimidating look to him, but with a smile that let you know he was on your side. I was an instant fan. My brother and I would always pick who we wanted to be in a game of whiffle ball. I was always choosing Winfield, and smacking my sneakers with the whiffle ball bat before stepping up to hit, just like Winfield. I didn't know much at 9 years old, but looking back, I'm glad I chose such a classy, rare individual as my favorite all time player.

My favorite player growing up. He earned everything he got, drafted in 3 pro sports, the man could do anything!

I was blessed to watch Dave in college at the U of M . A great pitcher for the gophers as well as outfielder also playing for Bill Musselman on the basketball court . What a stud athlete 💪 drafted by the NFL NBA and MLB .

I have been looking for a throw. Winfield caught a sac fly on the right field track, dude tagged at 2nd & Dave gunned him down. This was a one hop throw, on a line from the right field warning track to third base and to this day the best throw I have ever seen in my life and I cannot find it, I thought it might be here, BUMMER!!!!

A guy with that frame who could anything on the ball field and do it in spectacular fashion. It's too bad the Yankees had such rotten pitching in the 80's. Watching him throw darts from the warning track I would've loved to see have him throw off the mound for an inning.
