This was so fun watching your interaction with your bison today. You said at the end what I was thinking all along, that these big animals know you, they trust you, they know that you take care of them and are good to them. And I couldn't help thinking that because of that, for the most part, I believe that in their own way, they want to please you. I loved it that you spoke quietly to them and around them. No yelling "hee haw" etc. at them. I think that also creates an atmosphere of peace and that they sense your kindness and respect for them. I say all this based on a video I saw recently about a young girl and her bison that she raised from birth. She had such a close relationship with it and there was a real communication between them.

I am glad that you contacted Oklahoma University Vet School, not sure if you had read my other post about the possibility of fixing that hernia. Oklahoma has a great vet school especially for large animals and while I am sure no one is actually a bison specialist the fact that large cattle are close enough in anatomy, if it's fixable they will be able to do it. The one issue probably is going to be that the hernia has gone under repaired so long that they may not have enough muscle to close the opening and he will need a mesh patch to close it that muscle can eventually grow over. That will mean he probably will have to be isolated from other bison until it's well healed but that should also give him time to bulk up more as his system will be better able to digest food and no one will picking on him and keeping him away from food.

Yellowstone is filmed not far from where I live. He has been into town for dinner a couple of times though I haven't seen him. Montana has several movie stars and tv personalities that live here. And of course, Ted Turner has a bison herd not far from here either. You can see them in the summer when they put a few in the pasture next to the highway going to Yellowstone Natl Park. I was moved by that film as well. My favorites were Robert Redford's A River Runs Through It and The Horse Whisperer which were both filmed near here as well. I was living back East at the time and was certainly missing my Montana mountains!! BTW, thanks for taking such good care of Lumpy. Were they able to determine why he was limping or is it due to the change in gait necessary to keep his balance with his lump throwing him off kilter?

They are being obedient! I hope Lumpy can get help. Are you ever tempted to brush the more tame ones? Guess that fur protects their skin from the hot sun tho! Gee, that’s a lot of moving them around, but seems a lot easier this time. Dunbar is there to greet them!
