Donkey Kong Country 1, 2 & DK64 Ice Themes Medley

- This medley contains "In a Snowbound Land" from DKC2, "Ice Cave Chant" from DKC1 and "Crystal Caves" from DK64 (which I know isn't technically an ice theme, but it very much belongs with the other two in my humble opinion!).
This arrangement sort of exploded out of me all of a sudden. I've always loved the ice, snow and crystal themes in video games, and these were some of the most beautiful ones ever composed (originally created by David Wise and Grant Kirkhope respectively). I don't know if I did these themes justice or not, but I hope that I at least made this medley sound VERY cold! I was going for glistening, echoing, reflecting, brisk textures. A cool draft here, a snowy bite there, a piercing shimmer here, a clunking, glassy formation yonder. There are parts which sound like chattering teeth and bones in my mind, or dead leaves rattling in a December wind. All around is a granular mist, filled with white little heat-zaps which steal everyone's precious warmth. I hope you enjoy this (although I sort of also want you to need to put on an extra few layers while listening to this)!

I think DKC was the first non-rpg that i ever let run just to listen to the music. I still remember listening and watching the ice caves sparkle on my crt. Your compositions and arrangements appear often in my seasonal playlists; I'll add this to 'winterish' (we don't get much of a winter where I live). Happy 2020

Great job, as usual. Black ice battle was always one of my favorite levels, in no small part due to the music.
Frankly, I hated the snow levels in DKC so I never got into the music, but here, separated from the game play, the pieces shine. Well done!
I've always loved the ice themed worlds in Donkey Kong. It was such a wonderful nostalgic feeling to hear these tracks again.

First, thank you for the kind comments on my work. Especially on the soundcloud of Under Cover of Night. For a while it was the only comment on that track anywhere. The comments have all been greatly appreciated. I'm just slow to reply sometimes.
Second, you are crazy prolific. I've been slow to update my ocr library, and I know I've got many of your tracks on my go-to playlists for chilling, and I have a feeling I could easily double that amount. With good tracks. Prolific and good. Let's not forget good.

Honestly, this made my afternoon. I'm sure you've had that feeling once or twice, when you really admire someone's work and you consider their music to be so out of your league that you're taken aback when they take the time to listen to and comment on your own. That's kind of how I feel about your stuff! It's in many of my playlists too. :)
@@RebeccaETripp Glad to hear that, but surprised too. Especially the out of your league part, that seems like such a stretch. I think I'm decent at building an electronic groove and adapting sources in interesting ways, which for someone with a different skillset might be worth admiring, but swap out electronic grooves for orchestral soundscapes and it describes you just as well. Plus strong track concepts, and whatever skills it takes for massive collaborations. That's quite the skillset.
Transitioning from DKC1 to DKC2 is just heavenly, the light excitement naturally adding to the wonderment. As it did historically, DK64 kinda drags the other two down but you make it work.

Thank you! ^_^ I love cold themes as a rule! I think, with respect to obvious outliers, my favourite VGM themes go in ~this order: magical shrines, forest, cave, water, ice, desert, jungle, mountain/fire, town, machine/factory, castle/regal.
@@RebeccaETripp There are often beautiful things to do with water/ice ambiances, not always the most easy to work but they have a very special atmosphere :)
I never made a list of my fav ambiances but I guess it starts like : desert, fire, shadow, water, ice, forest

Beautiful! I especially like that you included 'Ice Cave Chant', I feel like that song doesn't get the credit it deserves.
I agree! It's a really beautiful melody! I find it simultaneously soothing and energizing.
I find it more soothing than anything else, personally. I really like how the main melody is played with a sort of tinkly sound that really goes well with the visual concept of glittery ice crystals. Definitely glad your version kept that! I really like the choir vocals during that part, too. It kind of adds a sense of wonder to the piece, like I'd expect it to feel if you actually walked into an ice cave like that.
That said, my favorite DKC ice level theme will always be 'In a Snowbound Land', and nothing's going to change that. I love pretty much all the music from Donkey Kong Country, but 'Snowbound Land' would definitely rank high on my top ten. I've actually long hoped someone would do a medley of 'Ice Cave Chant' and 'Snowbound Land', so thank you for granting that wish that you obviously had no idea I had. :) Plus 'Crystal Caves', which is one of my favorite songs from DK64 and goes a lot better with the first two than I would have expected.
