Biggest tip I have for those starting out is don't listen to western fly fishermen when they say Tenkara is for wimps (or other more non youtube comment appropriate words in place of wimp). There's a type of rod for every occasion and if someone wants to bash someone else for their way of fishing, then they're not a real fisherman.

I was taught western fly fishing by my dad. When I discovered tenkara, I watched youtube videos and read some websites.
My sister got me a Seaquest 12ft tenkara rod from Amazon. I picked up some floating tenkara lines from ebay. I have tried tippet but they broke to easily. So I just use 12lb fishing leader and I tie it to the floating line and to the fly
I have learn to make my own fly line from dynema lines.
Around me closest thing to a creek is a bayou. So I fish community lakes mostly.
Poppers and streamers are great like olive drab wooly bugger. I have used fly spoons (0.7g) and the Pistol Pete spinner fly.
GOD Bless you and your family

I started many years ago when Tenkara came to the U.S. and have been active in fishing, tying and introducing people to the sport. I also use Keiryu Rods and others up to 30 ft long with floats. Thanks for your promotion of the sport, it changes your approach to fishing using Japanese techniques.

Tristan, thanks so much for this video, and your recommendations in learning more about Tenkara. I am a book person and like the feel of the page as I read. My library is full of self help and how to books. I especially appreciated the book you recommended, “tenkara,” by Daniel Galhardo. The first thing I noticed was the quality of the book. “tenkara,” is beyond excellent in quality and instructional information. The QR codes included in this book, combine “old school” reading and internet technology. Excellent read! Thanks!

Never heard of tenkara fishing before. Saw 1 of your videos. I've watched almost all of them now. Bought my first tenkara rod last year.ive already caught a bunch of fish. Thanks

I've caught many a trout on my Tenkara rods, but the first fish I caught after buying my first Tenkara rod was not a trout, and the setting was far from the mountains. I was playing golf one day on my course on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and I brought my rod along in my golf bag, because I knew there was a par 3 I would play that is fronted by a pond, loaded with bream (sunfish) and some nice-sized bass. I only had one appropriate fly with me - a hopper pattern. I caught several nice bluegills with it, before I lost the fly - if I had more flies and time, I could have caught over 100 bream, and perhaps a bass or two. So, Tenkara will work in non-typical settings.

with western style fly gear I had 4 smallish frisbee's (maybe 8") that I could take to the soccerfield here in town, an easy toss to put them here n there and then cast INTO each of them... it really helps getting your 'marksmanship' tuned in... it works with tenkara too..... You're doing a great job with these videos Tristan, Thank You !!! ...

I'm ready grateful to find your channel. I fish. But this is just very kine. Different, evolved and traditional. Please please make a video about your line. The length, the knots , the difference between Ferrelled and level leader . All the lines things. Thanks. You rock. Many likes . Thanks.

I was fortunate to be active in a forum with Daniel when he brought tenkara USA here...still have my favorite rod from him/them. I catch bluegill and bass from my canoe with Tenkara...I'm 3 hours from the nearest trout ...but it's just a blast no matter what you catch.
Have loved your videos for years now...I think you are a great ambassador for the sport.

I am surprised there aren’t more videos showing how effective Tenkara is for warm water fish in lakes. I have lots of experience with that, but no camera or photography skills. Especially in spring, my friends and I have contests to see who can catch 100 fish in the shortest time. Sunfish, crappie, bass, perch, occasional pike, I think our record is 2 hours and 43 minutes, using mostly killer bugs and the killer crane fly. At that rate, very few casts get brought in without a fish. I think warm water fishing along lake shorelines with Tenkara is overlooked, tons of action for sure if you are in the right spot.

Awesome summary of resources. I might add that buying a fly fishing guide book for your local area is an easy way to find fishing spots if your local anglers are prone to secrecy.

Nice to see the beginnings of the art. I often feel like trying it. I tie many kebari flies. but fish the, with conventional gear-sort of like high stick nymphing. :-)

Im so glad this channel came up on my recommended list. I have been watching for a few weeks now and now im on the search to order / buy one of these set ups. i fish a lot of small waters where its hard to maneuver and cast. I was trying to find a 5 or 6 foot fly rod but im thinking that this might be the ticket im looking for.

The problem for many german-speaking people is that these books are only available in japanese or english and many do not understand these languages.
That's why two jears ago my friend and I wrote a small booklet for beginners in german language about it.

Be careful with Spring fishing,,,because I know you fish a lot in Grizz country. An experienced backcountry guy,,from Livingston was fishing last weekend ,,between Livingston and Gardiner,,,he was on a creek a few miles east of the Yellowstone,,,and he ran into a hungry spring Grizz,,,and they found him on Monday. Anyway,,you may have heard already,,but be careful.

I found your videos first. It was suggested by the algorithm probably because of the amount of Addicted Fishing I've been watching. After a lot of your videos I made my way over to TenkaraFromJapan which is so well produced that the use of subtitles almost doesn't matter. The physical presentation from the old master in those videos makes the oral part almost unnecessary.

I enjoy your videos. The camera work and editing is very good. It would be helpful if you mention if you are using dry or wet flies. I suspect that tenkara style of fishing is not only Japanese. Perhaps fishers around the world used this style before the invention of reels. See this painting: High Point: Shandaken Mountains' (1853), by Asher Brown Durand.

I've been a fisherman my whole life with most of my 63 years as a conventional western style fly fisherman. About 4 years ago I discovered tenkara watching Daniel Galhardo youtube videos. I was enthralled and soon purchased a Tenkara USA 13' foot zoom rod. Since then my Sage rods in their tubes have sat in the corner of my closet gathering dust as well as countless reels and fly lines. What I learned very quickly is you do not learn or practice tenkara. You just do.
