The Sanfermines are not only held in Pamplona. In the north of Navarre, in the heart of the Pyrenees, Lesaka pays tribute to the same patron saint with a varied festivity programme. The festivity starts in both places on the same day, July 6th, and at the same time, 12 noon. They also start in the same way: a ceremonial rocket fired from the balcony of the town hall. From that moment on, the two localities live their festivities to the full, sharing features such as music, dances, general happiness, and a Mass and procession on the most important day of the fiesta: July 7th.
However, the Sanfermines of Lesaka are less well known than the festivity in Pamplona, but they are good alternative for enjoying a good day without crowds. Apart from the atmosphere, you will discover one of the most spectacular traditions of Lesaka: the ezpatadantzaris. These are folk dancers from the town who dance on only one day of the year: July 7th. One of the dances they perform is the Zubigainekoa, a symbol of the peace accord signed in the 15th century between the historical neighbourhoods of Lesaka. It puts the dantzaris sense of balance to the test as they dance along the stone parapet of the river Onin, a tributary of the Bidasoa.
This danced ritual involves a 'captain' addressing a group made up of an even number of young people in two rows, linked among themselves and to the captain by makilas (sticks). They are dressed in white with scapulars and coloured ribbons, espadrilles and rattles on their calf muscles. Finally, the town's flag is flown over the bridge.

Los Sanfermines no sólo se celebran en Pamplona. Al norte de Navarra, en plenos Pirineos, Lesaka honra al mismo patrón con un variado programa de actos. En ambas localidades las fiestas arrancan el mismo día, 6 de julio, a la misma hora, 12:00 de la mañana, y de la misma manera, con un chupinazo disparado desde la casa consistorial. Y a partir de ese momento, las dos se sumergen en sus festejos compartiendo similitudes como la música, los bailes, la alegría y la misa y procesión del día grande.
Sin embargo, los Sanfermines de Lesaka son menos conocidos que los de Pamplona, por lo que son una buena opción para disfrutar de la fiesta sin aglomeraciones. Y además del ambiente, descubrirá una de las tradiciones más espectaculares de Lesaka: los ezpatadantzaris. Danzantes lesakarras que bailan un único día al año, el 7 de julio. Entre otras danzas, bailan el Zubigainekoa, un baile que es símbolo de la paz que se firmó en el siglo XV entre los barrios de Lesaka y que pone a prueba el equilibrio de los dantzaris que deben cuidar de no caer al río Onin, afluente del Bidasoa.
En este ritual bailado un capitán dirige a la comitiva formada por un número par de jóvenes en dos filas, unidos entre sí y al capitán por makilas (bastones). Su atuendo es blanco con escapularios y cintas de colores, alpargatas y cascabeles en las pantorrillas. Por último, la bandera de la villa será ondeada sobre el puente.

Sanferminak ez dira soilik Iruñean ospatzen. Nafarroako iparraldean, Pirinioen erdian dagoen Lesaka herrian ere patroi berari egiten diote gorazarre, ekitaldiz beteriko programa dutela. Bi herrietan egun berean hasten dira festak, uztailaren 6an, ordu berean, 12:00etan, eta modu berberean, udaletxetik botatako txupinazo batekin. Eta une horretatik aurrera, biak festa-giroan murgiltzen dira, ekitaldi asko eta asko partekatuta: musika, dantzak, alaitasuna, eta egun handiaren meza eta prozesioa.
Dena dela, Lesakako sanferminak ez dira Iruñekoak bezain ezagunak, eta, beraz, aukera ona dira festaz gozatzeko jende-pilaketarik gabe.
