  • This was my first,rather reluctant visit to Mid-Wales,and however many times I've been back since,nothing has surpassed it!! And that is not to say that I've had some brilliant trips down there since,but this was extra special.That combination of the first impression,combined with spectacular conditions and you have the winner!The journey down was a bit of a 'mare,heavy traffic(Friday)roadworks,stuck being slow vehicles,and finally a detour,due to an accident.End result is,I arrive late,can't park at Newquay,so drive to Cwmtydu,(Cum - tiddi)and launch there.The Sea was in it's calming down state,and was just that little bit choppy to be comfortable,until the return.Newquay is a lovely little place,if your wanting it to be anything like it's Cornish bigger namesake then you will be dissapointed,if on the other hand,you like a quaint, little,well kept,quiet,historic little harbour then,you will be impressed as I was.Dolphin sightings here are quite common,and are often seen from the harbour,if no luck there,then there are boat trips.Within a half hour of paddling from Cwmtydu,I saw a pod out to sea,jumping clear out of the water,so after seeing them,and the close encounter heading back from Newquay,I was really looking forward to the day after.Up 8ish,perfect weather,no wind,warm,sunny,cannot contain myself.Breakfast at Berwyns' cafe at Cwmtydu,just about to launch - and the Sea Fog rolls in!!!Drove round to Newquay to see if it was any better - worse.Just drive 1/4 mile inland,and it was the most beautiful of summers days,but all along the "Sea fret" was enveloping the coastline.Later,I drove to Aberporth,and it was a little better,and after deciding that it must lift at some time,I took the plunge.This was the first time I ever paddled without a drysuit on - and it was fantastic.As you can see,the journey all along is fabulous,with interest at every turn,the sea was gin clear,and some of the little beaches are absolutely superb.Llangranog in particular was outstanding,and it is much better visiting by Kayak the road down is narrow,and parking is a real problem,having to park right up the hillside and walk in.When that fog finally lifted,I swear,the colours were the most vibrant I've ever seen,it even seems that way reviewing the footage on film! The 1/2 hour or so I had off Ynys Lochtyn was just amongst the best time I've ever had.The combination of the situation,the Dolphins,the clearing fog,and being able to see the beautiful coastline for the first time was just immense,and the peaceful journey back in that fabulous sunset was the icing on the cake.I have returned here quite a few times,and had some really brilliant times,but none have beaten this.The whole area is fabulous,and just down the coast is Cardigan,and a top drawer paddle to the Witches Cauldron. The music is as usual all my own work,Santos Martinez guitar,and Yamaha keyboard,all recorded in the Boss BR600 - as usual enjoy!

    @MusicWoman55 You're welcome,don't know where you live,but this coast is definitely worth the journey,and the Dolphins are almost always present.You have a very good chance of encountering them.

    Because,I didn't have the camping stove then! Can't believe how long it took me to get a decent stove,absolutely essential in remote areas,even if you return to shore,most places stop serving after 8pm,and I love to be out late paddling in the sunset and that - usually the best time of day!

    @skomer100 Nice one,you're in one of the UK's greatest areas for Sea Kayaking,you've got the lot,cliffs,caves,coves,tideraces,estuaries,surf beaches,full compliment of wildlife.Have you been watching Springwatch? If you're new to kayaking,I'd recommend a few lessons to speed things up,and start small.You have some brilliant beginners paddles,that are still good for more experienced paddlers.Newport to Dinas Head,Cwmtydu,Aberporth,Abercastle,can all be done avoiding tide races,don't forget Dale.

    Another great video as usual, I love the way you appreciate everything you see. The only thing I find strange, is that you always seem to be seeing Jesus everywhere you go.

    @spindleyperson Thanks,this is mainly,why I started posting videos.When I was starting out,I too was looking for places,advice e.t.c. also,you may be interested in a place and want to know what it would be like,might save a wasted journey.If you head down here,anywhere South of New Quay,you would not be dissapointed,all the places I have visited have been superb,given decent weather!

  • @GBPaddling
    @GBPaddling  Před 13 lety

    @BarnacleBi11 Grand or Gradely? ha ha thanks,yes indeed,if I were to compile a list of my top 10 paddles,this one would probably make the top 5.At the time I was still quite new to sea kayaking,only starting the previous August,and it made a very deep impression in my soul,also it was my first visit here.The road network to Mid Wales is not that good(as in - no motorways) but a consequence of that is,it is much quieter - another well kept secret I think!

    @Transmogrifoch Sir!! Like that,go to the top of the class ha ha.I meant to post it a lot sooner,but it was one of my early attempts and the camera work was much too jerky,when videoing,think long slow shots,steady as possible,with minimum zooming.Having said all that,when I shot most of these videos,I didn't have CZcams in mind,I posted my 1st video in Sept. 09 and have only been taking it a bit more serious since then!

    Hi again, cant stay away from your videos lol. When is the best tide state to go at to get that silky smooth water that is almost completely still, like right at the end of the video? Thanks.

    @delboyjdf Yep,realised that a while ago ha ha,as one gets older,and the head and neck merge into one,the old goatee provides a good indication of the joint! Tell you what I would swap now with how I was then though - MY WEIGHT.

  • @GBPaddling
    @GBPaddling  Před 13 lety

    @paul1967uk My turn - canoe???? think you mean Kayak ha ha
    Yes when you say New Quay,everyone says "That's in Cornwall" it should be called,as it is by some "Little New Quay!!"
    As for paddling between Portreath and Godrevy - why not? as long as it's calm,as it was for the 2 days I spent there.I know it gets a lot of swell,and I know I was lucky,but the sea is neither always rough, or always calm!

    @onlywhenpissed Do tell all on return!

  • @GBPaddling
    @GBPaddling  Před 12 lety

    It's not really about the tide Brasher, there is very little tidal current along this coast, other than off Ynys Lochtyn, where the fog had lifted. It's all about WIND, dreaded wind, speed, direction, and amount of time it's been blowing. For conditions like this, you need High Pressure in charge, and the magic word from the Coastguard......."VARIABLE" when they say winds, light and variable..........bingo. Problem is, given U.K. weather, you can never 100% trust what they say though.

  • @GBPaddling
    @GBPaddling  Před 13 lety

    @onlywhenpissed Glad you like it! I knew putting a title like that on it would have to be good,well I enjoyed it ! Anyway how was Lanzagrotty?,did you manage to get out to Los Lobos?was it better than Faliraki,which is Fairlycrappi,but Full'ocracki.

  • @GBPaddling
    @GBPaddling  Před 13 lety

    @paul1967uk So that explains why the nudist guy who was at Fishing Cove refused to dangle his Tallywacker in the water!! and I thought it was because the water is cold and it might shrink his Tallywcker!!
    Don't know of any Shark attacks,in these waters.If there was I'm sure the press would have a field day.I know there are Mako,and Porbeagle and a friend of mine saw a Thresher in Plymouth Sound,but I am totally unaware of anyone being attacked - it dosen't worry me,nor should it worry You!!

    • @GBPaddling
      @GBPaddling  Před 9 lety

      +jamesdivall64 Cheers James, lucky you by the way. That area is still one of my favourites, it's always a treat. I have a Rockpool, but they are all different, and you really need to sit in one and indeed paddle one to make your mind up. A wide one is stable, but more cumbersome, as is a long one 5.5m. I really could not recommend one, as it really is a personal choice, it's like me saying I like the Audi, but you may prefer the Beemer.
