How To Tips for Easy Restring of Weed Eater with 2 strings

  • To restring weed eater, follow the arrows. The weed eater 2 string head shows the direction to restring.
Be kind, rewind.. your weed eater 2 string trimmer that is.
Most line trimmers, weed whackers, have refillable spools that dispense line as you need it while trimming up the edges of your yard.
We sell several styles of line trimmer spools all wound-up and ready to go. And if your spool is broken or not dispensing line you probably need to purchase a new one.
However, if your spool was still working until it ran out of line you can probably save up to $30 by purchasing bulk line and winding your old spool yourself. Because one $3.00 refill can rewind your old spool over 3 times saving about $10 for a new spool every time.
The most common line size is .065 which may be printed on the shaft of your machine, or on the spool, or in your owner’s manual. When in doubt bring in a scrap of the old line and sizing is easy with a dial calipers, (on hand in any quality lawn and garden business).
To rewind inspect the core of the spool and find the small hole or slot where the line can be inserted into. Put the line in the slot and let the package spin on the floor as you wind in the direction of the arrow on the spool.
Do not overfill your spool. Better to wind it to about 3/4 of the capacity or so because too much line and inserting the spool back into the machine can be difficult.
Once you have enough line on the spool cut it so 6” of line is in your hand and you are keeping it tight. There should be a slot in the spool for you to pull the line into keeping it from unwinding from the spool. This allows you to insert the spool into the machine without it unwinding. My slot is worn out so I have to keep my finger in the spool as I insert the loose end of the line into the feed hole in the machine. I feed the line through the hole, grab it to keep tension on it, and insert the spool.
My big machine is a 2 string trimmer so I cut two 9-foot pieces of line and wind them both at the same time. Your spool could be larger or smaller so 9-foot is just a starting point when making the two lines for your machine.
Last bonus to winding your own, you can purchase better commercial line that lasts longer than the original line.

Haha, i wish id seen your vid a while ago( would have saved a lot of swearing!). Ignore the " dislike" votes, you made a good vid and there is ALWAYS a moron somewhere who likes to be difficult. Well explained UNTIL near the end at about 2.40 minutes, when the "keeper was mentioned. It would have been helpful to have a close up of the two lines in their keeper. It seemed to me as if the lines had to cross over??

    • @garymetzler3882
      @garymetzler3882 Před 7 lety +43

The keeper notches are there just to hold the lines while you install the spool on the trimmer. Then, you can push the lines back out so they are free. You do not leave the lines in the keeper slots.

I don’t think it really matters if they cross or not. As long as you stick each line into its notches to prevent them from unrolling. Remember, in the end, you have to un-notch them anyways. As long as each string is going into its own separate holes through the weed eater machine, you’re good.

There is a notch cut through both sides of the spool from the bottom half. It runs directly across and out the top, just like the top spool hangs out, so its same but doubled for the bottom.
Once secured put head and spring back in, run the two spool strands out the heads outlets, press and hold down snug, secure the trimmer headbolt back on, remember counter clockwise, its a reverse thread. So righty loosey, lefty tighty in this case

USAF here stationed in the UK... Bought a Stiga trimmer and had never owned a dual line one before. Went to replace the line and quickly got frustrated. I was born and raised not far from St. Clair Shores over there in Michigan and as soon as I heard your accent and you said where you're from I knew I was good to go. Felt like back home hearing from an uncle. I'm subscribing! Thanks man!

I've struggled with this task since I was a kid. Now as an adult with my weedwacker finally running out I NEEDED to do this. Or I should just sell my house and hand in all my tools... Your vid made it very easy. I know it's a simple thing but doing it without hassle for the first time in my life was something else. Thanks a bunch. Great explanation.

I have a Harbor Freight corded string trimmer with a similar kind of stringing system.
My experience is that there is MORE to it than just what your describe.
For example, there is a strong tendency when the spool is put back in the machine for the string inside to rewind, pulling the string back into the housing.
Two tips that reduce the likelihood of that happening:
1: leave a foot or so of line outside both holes after inserting the holder into the trimmer.
    2. Once the holder and trimmer have been reassembled, you can wind some of that excess back by winding the holder while it's inside the trimmer, but leave some surplus outside to avoid seeing that string disappear back into the housing!
    3. The Harbor Freight trimmer has two detents used to relase the holder from the trimmer. These tend to be a pain to make work. What works for me is to work on pushing just one UP until the holder is released from the trimmer housing. Trying to open both at the same time is a waste of time.
    4. This trimmer has an auto advance system. Each time the trimmer stops spinning you should hear a soft "click" which is thye trimmer line advancing a notch. You can do this repeatedly but just bumping the switch to start it rotating a bit, then let it slow down and listen for the click.
If you don't hear the click, something is wrong and you'll probably have to open it up and fix what's wrong. Often the string is wrapped too tightly to be unwrapped by the feed mechanism.
Have fun! I found it take a lot of practice to make this work reasonably well!

Very informative. Worked like a charm except that our spool did not have the starting holes. It did have grooves that went to the bottom on the center plastic wire separator. We stacked the lines with the help of a knife to make sure they were as low as possible and were able to wind as instructed. Thanks so much for this video. Now we can continue to use our Craftsman even though the replacement spools are no longer readily available.
