Allen Bradley PLC Programming Sequencer Tutorial. Sequence Control

  • We are going to go in depth from start to finish on different PLC programming methods of sequence machine steps in Allen Bradley PLCs with tips for both beginners and automation professionals. In the last two livestreams we have discussed ladder logic machine sequencing in Studio 5000, formerly RsLogix 5000, for the Controllogix and Compactlogix PLC, and RsLogix 500 step sequencing for the Micrologix and SLC 500 PLC. In this one we will use Rockwell Automation's Connected Components Workbench with an Allen Bradley Micro820 PLC for these PLC sequence programming examples .
    Among the methods we will cover will be using counters to sequence machines, multiple counter sequencer variation, Add and ONS sequence tracking, Seal In logic to do machine steps, Latch Unlatch bit tracking, MOV binary sequence tracking, multiply to shift bits variation, and bit shift left machine tracking. The one method you will not discuss is the SQI/SQO sequencer method. As we discussed in the Studio 5000 first program livestream, it isn't one of the best methods of sequencing machines because it is very brand specific. All of these methods will work across most brands of programmable logic controllers.

    Hey Tim!
    I was watching through this video, and in case you never got it figured out:
    at 2:00:00 you are having trouble cycling through the output coils in CCW- just click the output coil and press the space bar!

    • @TimWilborne
      @TimWilborne  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Nice! I had found you could go to properties and select it there, but didn't know about the space bar. Thanks 👍

    Tim, Thanks for another great subject and video. Thanks to Michael as well. Sorry I wasn't able to attend live.
    I was taught the seal-in and latch/Unlatch methods.
    I like the MOV decimal method the best. It seems you always have to add something that wasn't originally planned. Looks like it would be easy to skip steps if not need. In a current application they plan to use a bar code reader to determine if a part needs a hole drilled in it or not. If not, we will just skip the drilling step.
    During the latch/unlatch segment you tried to change a direct coil to a set (latch) coil. Don't know if you have found the answer yet. If you select the coil then go to properties, you can change it by clicking the down arrow on the "Modifier" line. All valid coil options are listed. The same is true for the contact and some other types as well.

    In case you have not figured it out yet, to change the output, click and go to properties, you can change from latch unlatch set in the modifier in version 22.

    Hi Tim. I like the move decimal version the most. Even with adding timeout and fault checks to the sequencer, I find it easy to follow.
    Thank you for the demonstrations! Perhaps an HMI integration for the sequencers we just made for a next video?

    Not sure if you figured it out but in CCW when you change the name of the TON after giving it a time, you have to retype the time to get rid of the exclamation point. It's kind of silly.

      Thank you. I have seen these before. We are currently using counters for pump rotation at greater than duplex pump stations, but I am going to try to adapt your sequencer example into a multi-pump rotation, while still being able to account for rotation changes during a pump maintenance or out of order event. Unless you already have an example of this?

    The lights are sourcing. Are the switches really sinking though? I would say the switches are doing neither sinking or sourcing since there is no DC- going to the switches. But this is semantics so it doesn't matter.

    Hi Tim, thank you so much for all that you do. For clarification, around 15:40 you mention the sensors are sinking to the PLC. Does this mean they are sourcing (PNP) sensors that sink to the PLC input, or they are sinking (NPN) sensors that are sourced from the PLC? I would guess the former since it goes from + to switch to PLC input to com0
