How Russia tries to take advantage of its broken trade with the West | DW News

  • Russia is cut off from trade with the West as sanctions are hitting Russia's economy. Vladimir Putin's government lacks revenue from exports like oil and timber. The Russian president wants to bypass the blockade with the help of new partner countries. Russia is naturally looking elsewhere to do business. That's where a new trade route with India comes in, with both countries hoping to speed up bilateral trade.
The usual trade route runs from St. Petersburg to Mumbai in India. A shipping route of about 15,000 kilometers that takes around 40 days. The container ships travel via the Suez Canal to Mumbai before reaching markets all across Asia. The New North South Route is Russia's solution to the trade blockade: via St Petersburg, Moscow, Azerbaijan and Iran to Mumbai. The International North South Transport Corridor is just over 7,000 kilometers, half as long as the usual route. Companies could save an average 20 days worth of transport and the costs that go along with it. The new route could replace lost trade, it seems what's Europe's loss could be Asia's gain. What makes it so attractive for the regions?

Up until 18th century, China (about 25 - 30%) and India (about 25%) were 2 the biggest economies in the world for 3000 some years. Due to certain factors, mainly colonialism, West European nations and USA leapfrogged to become top economic powers in the last 200 years. British took 45 trillion dollars, in today's dollar, when they colonized India for 200 years. A racist colonial once said, in early 20th century, China will need 1000 years to equal West. Deng Xiaoping and CCP did that in 30 years by taking 800 million out of poverty. In same 30 years, India took 250 million out of poverty. China is projected to be number 1 economy in 2030. The East India Co was ended in 1874 : they boasted that they had handed the British government "The finest civil and military administration the world has ever seen"
That was the contribution of the East India Co.
The British Raj (colonialism) then began.
Only 50% was under British rule.
Did India look to the indigenous regions when they established a state in 1947 ?
Did they base the state on Hinduism, the caste system, exploitation of peasants and corruption ?
No, they based the state on the British system, democracy, the rule of law, division of powers and equality before the law.

India Just like other Asian countries doesn't have the luxury to align with either Russia or the west.
    It needs both of them.
The west is our major trading partner while Russia is a major Eurasian power along with China,Japan etc and vital for our regional cooperation.

I think the EU and the west more broadly (as a westerner) need to be very careful about the prospect of trying to force countries to take sides in a new cold war type situation. If we (the west) start saying "we won't help you unless you adopt our foreign policies and restructure your government" but, say, China (as this is their policy) and associated organizations (BRICS and SCO) keep saying "you don't have to support our foreign policy aims, or change your government type, we'll still partner with you on trade & tech"... it won't be any shock when all these otherwise "fence sitting" countries develop animosity towards the west/EU, because the west appear to be the unreasonable/forceful/provocateurs while the Chinese and Russian (ironically given Ukraine) look like the "reasonable" sovereignty-respecters who just want to do business/be "charitable".
BRICS knows this too, I think, hence their making a point at their last summit of emphasizing how they aim to support trade and economic ties regardless of "differing" foreign policy stances of their members (ie. China and India can be rivals and still be BRICS members... Iran and Saudi Arabia can both join and still have issues over proxies... etc). They're already trying to lay the groundwork for painting western countries as having a continuing colonial mindset and superiority complex that is hostile to the global trade and business environment... and that narrative is spreading. Saudi FM basically repeated it verbatim after Biden's last visit, refusing to join in "attempts to isolate China", and stating the countries position that such "economic hostility" is destabilizing and inappropriate. Saudi Arabia has proceeded to buy more oil from Russia. This being a, nominally, US aligned middle eastern country.
Global south is a battleground which the west is losing because the west is being too forceful in trying to convert it to our own "order". US bore the brunt of this embarrassment with the Summit of the Americas, boycotted by several countries including Mexico because the US refused to invite Cuba, Venezuela or Nicaragua. Many of those who did attend (ie. Brazil) did so reluctantly while others vocalized discontent at the summit itself. Whole thing turned into an embarrassing diplomatic failure rather than a show of renewed US prevelance in Central and South America. This trend doesn't seem to be reversing either, as Columbia (arguably the US's most consistent ally in South America) just elected a leftist President, for the first time ever in its history, who favors renewed relations and cross border trade with Venezuela's Maduro.
It is simply easier for countries in the global south to align with countries such as China, as opposed to the west, on economic matters because the Chinese don't attach political "terms and conditions" to doing business. All they want is, in their words, "win win cooperation" and the development of a "multipolar world" where sovereignty is King. That prospect is far easier to get behind for leaders in the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia more broadly than having to adapt to the west's "rules based order" at the cost of trade with other partners and unpopular societal reform (see the pushback in Africa from efforts by western nations during the Obama administration to demand reform on LGBT rights). If you can have China & Russia as your main partners and they're totally find with you also doing business in the west, but the west as your main partners would require you to sever ties with Russia and China... why would you prioritize the west? Too many concessions.
Many ideologues here may not like it... but the reality is, as long as we try to enforce "global liberalization" we'll be generating disdain and contempt from everywhere else and creating fertile breeding ground for Sino-Russian sympathy.

The US, Germany, France and UK gave diplomatic notes to Egypt and the Arab League before the the visit of Lavrov, that they should not sign deals with Russia, take pictures with Lavrov, an if possible not show up, it was received as a major offence, they told about this publicly and made a joke about it. Macron went to Camaroon and without any touch said that African countries are hypocritical for not condemning Russia, President Byal remembered him of how bad was the french colonialism. The guy is so out of touch he replied he was going to create a commission of historians to validate what happened, making implicit that colonialism by itself was not something criminal.
I call it the Belorussian syndrome. The EU offered money and cooperation to Belarus just to poke Russia, once the got inside the country they used all types of strategies to create a regime change. The lesson is not about how bad and barbaric Lukashenko is, the lesson is about that it is very dangerous to do business with the EU. I expect to see much more Manufacturing in the US over the next Decade.
Countries such as Russia are also incentivised to build out Manufacturing because they are cut off from major Suppliers such as EU.

@Rasgulla Aksai Chin and POK = territorial disputes
This was not a map about territorial disputes but a map about transport route.
Azerbaijan: There are 2 existing pipelines that go through Azerbaijan which end in the Turkeye. Not unthinkable to connect/extend one of them to India. The one that leads to Pakistan through Iran is also still under construction.
This was a video generally bringing up the possibility of future gas routes but they do not exist yet, not about issues you mentioned.
