As a priest who worked in a economically diverse neighborhood in Cincinnati, I can’t tell you how many times I had to help people just to renew their State ID, and if they let that lapse, it was a nightmare. Thanks for bringing up a reality of the poor, disenfranchised, and the elderly who had to also depend on city transportation.

Aren’t government documents required to register to vote? Once registered, all you have to do is give your name and address to vote.
Not documents per se but you give your personal info including your SSN and they can determine eligibility through that.
They are trying to say anyone can just walk in and get a ballot and people actually believe them. Obviously if people have registered to vote they know better, hopefully 🤞🏻
I am so ready to vote against Trump. Every time he rants I just wish he’d disappear and we’d never have to listen to his awful voice again.
I will say that I’m worried about this election because my husband (who voted for Joe in 2020) is saying he won’t vote for him again because of his mishandling of the Israel/Gaza war and the ban of TikTok.
He’s kind of gone in a wild direction saying “Both sides are bad so we should sit out this election” because Joe goes against his moral and ethical beliefs.
I voted for Joe in 2020 and plan to vote for him again in 2024. The apathy is what is concerning to me. We should all be very concerned about how to motivate people to turn out and vote against Donald Trump.
I’m more a left leaning nondenominational Christian and Trump is repulsive- to be honest.
I’m worried about the misinformation going around on TikTok and how it might actually carry enough weight to potentially cause a million or so people to just “sit out” this election and allow the crazy old guy to win over a common sense catholic man that is working to get abortion rights back for everyone.
Quite frankly, I’m worried the both sidesism will doom us all. I’ve studied psychology for years and it’s like people have genuinely lost their marbles.

Hi David. I think the NY prosecutors have to request that Trump be held liable for each violation of the gag order, so, they want to make sure it's serious enough to warrant jail time. Until the D.A. asks for jail, the Judge will not on his own.
I do think Judge Merchan is willing to jail Trump if the violation is serious.
I feel for your caller about his Trumper relatives. My relatives live in Iowa and there is no way to change their minds with facts. I had to remove myself from them to help my sanity. It's sad, I know.

All government ID and documents should be FREE, copies too, and probably are in OTHER countries...😡
I agree that some forms of identification should be free, especially voter IDs and national IDs (citizenship IDs), and should not have expiration dates. However, they should be required to be used at least once every voting year to remain valid. If a person skips a presidential election year, they should be required to renew their voter ID and national ID. This will also increase voter turnout.
The IDs for a driver's license and other government-issued IDs that are optional to obtain should still require a fee.
The government needs to provide voter IDs and national IDs the moment people register to vote and when they turn 18 years old for a national ID.
I live in Germany. Here, carrying an ID is mandatory, but they are easy to obtain, seeing as there are always citizens’ service centres close by. I think the ID costed €28 and seeing as I could walk the ~20 minutes, there were no extra travel costs. In larger towns they have centres in a lot of suburbs, too, so there is easy access for everyone. You have to register your address at the citizens’ service centre when you move. By doing so, you are automatically also registered to vote. As a Brit, I didn’t have a German ID and was therefore only allowed to participate in local and EU elections. Due to Brexit, I applied for dual citizenship in 2018.
At our next general election in 2021, I automatically received an invitation to vote for the first time. I took my ID with me, but didn’t really need it, only the invitation. They checked my invitation with their lists and then checked off my name. That was it, no problems. There are also numerous polling locations, so that just about everyone has one close by, normally reachable on foot. My polling location was a 3-minute walk from my apartment, so it took me all of 16 minutes from the moment I left my apartment to the moment I returned after voting.
From what I gathered, it’s more-or-less the same in other European countries. If America implemented these measures, there would be no more discussions. However, with Republicans wanting “small government” and not wanting to spend money (but always ending up spending the most!), it’s almost impossible to get this done and I have a suspicion they don’t want to. They don’t want even every eligible person to vote. They insist on voter ID, but refuse to do anything to make them easier to obtain.
@patriciamillin1977 I'm from the UK and have traveled alot. I've been able to apply for a proxy vote before, and have a friend a trust to vote in my place. First time I had to fax the application, the second time was via an online form.
It's the government, they know who you are through your taxes. They have alot of avenues to know who you are before you get to the poll station to make the experience easy. It's a Choice to not do that.

That's not the case in the US - they _don't_ want particular people to vote, so they do all they can to suppress them. I am in Indiana, and I have to show ID. So far, no problem for me. However, Indiana has one of the lowest rates of voter participation in the US.

Nothing happened after all of canada legalized Canabis. We made money off taxes. In Ontario I can order it for delivery to my house from the province (state). Nothing bad happened. .
Make it a federal law that each state has to issue free voter id’s to every resident. Also, make it a federal holiday for each November Election Day.
I've never heard of a state that charges for voter ID.
As a Canadian that watches your show I find difference between our countries interesting. We need ID to vote and never thought about all the obstacles that presents. It’s never been a national conversation in Canada as far as I’m aware. We have to pay for government documents and it’s not cheap.
If you have a social security number or a birth certificate, you can easily get an id.
Many people have a social security number, but it costs money to get an ID. For some low income people, even a low fee and traveling to specific locations during work hours can be extremely difficult. Also, many people have trouble obtaining their birth certificate. If you aren't lucky enough to get an original copy from your parents, you have to contact the place you were born and pay to get it. If you live out of state or any number of record keeping obstructions, that can prevent some from obtaining a birth certificate to get your ID. It's not that it's extremely difficult for most people, it's that it can be difficult for some people, overwhelmingly lower income households.
@McCarthyJohn100 all valid points, but it doesn't eliminate that you should have to show identification to vote. Also, I've never had a job that doesn't require an ID. They have to verify who you say you are.

I've voted in the US since early 2000s and always had to present my ID for every precint in 5 states.
I've voted for over FIFTY YEARS and never been asked to produce my ID! Only required to be registered and to sign the log book.

I'm disabled and except for my first vote in 1992, I've voted absentee in every election, so no ID needed.
For the beginning of life arguement, I flip it the other way. As in when do we decide life ends. Does the government have a right to tell you that you have to keep a loved one on life support? My mother had a do not resuscitate, but emts resuscitated and we had to gather at the hospital and decide to pull life support. Should the government have been able to tell us no you have to leave her on life support? How long should families have to bear that burden, tube feeding, washing, paying for a person that has, by medical standards, died. Now abortion is even more personal because that life support is a living breathing person. So it's not one to one but many people that don't understand abortion have experienced having to make end of life decisions for other family and it is similar enough to spark some deeper thought

I helped a neighbour get a photo ID. They didn't have a bank account, so I wrote a blank check to the state of Texas [we were not in TX] to get a certified birth certificate. A literal blank check. It was less than USD 50, the upper end of reasonable costs. If I hadn't done it, who would have?

I‘m not American but from what I’ve heard it’s very difficult to get an ID in some, especially rural areas. Seeing as most people don’t travel that much outside the USA, they generally don’t bother. So enforcing voter ID would particularly harm those people. This really is just another form of voter suppression. I can imagine it would mostly affect African Americans or other POC, but wouldn’t it also affect a lot of Republican voters, who mostly live in those rural areas?

BTW, David, i bought 2 books "Think Like a Voter". My 8 and 12 yr old grandaughter loves the book. And,a copy was given to her elementary school librarian for the kiddos. Get involved early in your family's understanding of the US Constitution, government processes, civil rights, and voting.

Michael Popok went down there and filmed live to prove there were neither no large protest groups outside the court building nor was the block closed aside from one direction and that’s blocked off from crossing normally anyway. He crossed the usual way and stood right outside the building where Judge Merchan’s courtroom is located.

The jail a president bandaid needs to be pulled. Once he is jailed for a few days, then when found guilty you can jail for much longer no problem. All other cases can follow suit.
My first child was born in Indianapolis in 1968. Birth certificates were issued by the Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County. A week after he was born I received a copy--not a certified one--of his birth certificate, with a note that said that certificates were $3.00 each (minimum wage at that time was $1.60) but that they would be issued free if needed to establish age to enter school, to file for social security benefits, or to enter the Armed Forces. I would have no problem with a state imposing voter ID requirements if birth certificates were issued free for that purpose.
Electric motors are WAY simpler machines than internal combustion engines. There’s a lot less that can go wrong. We’ve had our Model 3 for 5 years, no problems. Even the brakes last longer, because the motor handles most of the slowing/stopping. It’s basically tires, wiper blades, and washer fluid.

My concern is the encouragement of untruthful statements claiming asylum, which I do not believe represents a large portion of these immigrants. The immigration issue should be discussed as a economic necessity given dropping birth rates. I do not think letting uneducated socially fragmented groups unregulated access to the same benefits as citizens is viable however. So rules, including penalties for failure to follow those rules, are necessary. I will never vote for a Vivek for anything. Ever.
To register to vote, you do have to have an ID and a registered signature on file.
When you walk into vote, you bring in your registration card and sign in. It either matches or it doesn’t.
I live in an area where they always check a government I’d. I am an independent. I have never understood why we would not be required to identify ourselves. If they can take time to vote they can take time to get an ID. Set up ID registrations at voting places.
Personally, I think we should present a valid ID for many things. Right now, you need a valid ID to legally drive, fly, buy certain OTC meds, etc. Same should be for guns, voting, etc.
@56:54 - Ben on MeidasTouch is having the same kind of problems. I'm thinking Russian interference. But (of course) that is just a thought. What I would do to begin with is to get a vacuum, open up all of your devices, a either blow them out or vacuum them out. It could be vents have filled with dust et al. Also, dusty components can short out. Not EXPLODE - but just kind-of short out causing various problems. In this case, get some Q-Tips, dip in alcohol, and swab all of the exposed connectors to remove various particles. Also check to see if there is a RESET switch that can be used AFTER you have written down any/all settings (so you can quickly re-insert them). But ya know - the US actually has caused problems with various equipment remotely. You, MeidasTouch, and others are reaching millions of people both inside of the US as well as outside of the US. So it is not beyond reason to think someone who wants Trump to win this upcoming election to be mucking around with your equipment. Maybe there is a log you can print out and look at. If you can print out a log, use PHP to write a script to go through the log for you looking for suspicious activity. I wrote a log scanner for a web server I used to run. The program not only scanned for people attempting to hack into the web server, it also got their email address and wrote to the person's administrator asking them to check into what the person was doing. I managed to shut down several fake accounts. So if someone was trying to hack into a simple web server - you and the MeidasTouch people would certainly be something a hacker would love to get into.

They've just introduced voter ID here in the UK (pushed by US talking points). You can apply on-line for free photo ID, or as they call it a Voter Authority Certificate, if you do not have a passport or drivers licence,
no cost, no travel and no hassle. The funny thing is when the Labour party introduced similar ID which could also replace passport for travel in the EU, the very same people who have pushed this through (conservatives) were up in arms about it and on their first days in office got rid of it.
