For a reason I can’t explain fully, “dancing around the kitchen in the refrigerator light” is one on my all time favorite Taylor swift lyrics. It’s such a not obvious moment to describe but the imagery is so striking and it’s such a subtly romantic moment that’s so beautiful to imagine. It also further depicts how she remembers all those little moments so vividly that most people would find insignificant, which makes the song even more heartbreaking as the story continues. I can talk for hours about why All Too Well is THE greatest song.
Another thing I notice is that those moments so randomly described are not in fact so random. It´s like the different stages of a relationship: 1 who it all started (the crush when the guy saw her in the red light), how they spend moments together (like driving and singing in the car), how she met his family and past( the photo album scene), how they share a house or live at least some time together( the dancing in the kitchen)... And finally, in the bridge, how they broke up. It´s all pretty intentional in the end.

I’ve always read the lyric ‘driving a new Maserati down a dead end street’ as taking something so valuable with the potential to do great things to a place where it essentially just goes to die. Where it’s just wasted. And the fact it’s a NEW Maserati as well, something so new and exciting that should have a long road with many journeys ahead of it, reaching a dead end before it even gets the chance! I love comparing interpretations as I’ve never thought of that line the way you guys did either!!

The Last Time really is one of her most underrated songs ever, it's so good. Also even though at first glance it's just an ultimatum, like "This is the last time I give you your chance and after that we're done", I actually think it's about not being able to separate for good. The words "This is the last time" are repeated so much throughout the song, especially at the end where they just say it over and over again sounding almost desperate, it feels like every time they want to convince themselves it's their last shot together but they can't actually make it end I just like this idea, which also makes the song really ironic because it means "The Last Time" is about how you aren't able to make it the last time
‘It never ever occurred to you, that I can’t say hello to you and risk another good bye’ is one of my favourite lyrics ever, I almost do is underrated, there is just something about it. it is so tender and romantic, but it’s the dream of that because she wishes she could have that but she knows if she went back, it wouldn’t be what she imagined and romanised. It’s like looking back and knowing it’s over, accepting it but still not wanting to let go yet, omg it’s just a masterpiece!!!

I have to say, I really don't think IKYWT is about Harry Styles. Personally, I think it makes much more sense for it to be about John Mayer, because yes, she briefly dated Harry before Red came out, but then she dated him for longer before 1989. If Harry had treated her like IKYWT implies, I don't think she would have gone back to him, much less written all the very flattering songs about him on 1989. The reason I think it's John Mayer is for two reasons: the whole concept of IKYWT is that she knew he wasn't good for her, but she went for it anyway and now blames herself for how it all turned out, which reminds me of "my mother accused me of losing my mind, but I swore I was fine". Also, the bridge is very reminiscent of a line in the song "Half of My Heart" which she sang with John Mayer, where at one point he sings "half of my heart is the part of a man who's never truly loved anything". Sorry for the essay just wanted to put this out there Edit: Also, All Too Well is not the first song she changes every single chorus on, she does it on Mary's Song too!

Didn't he get caught kissing a girl on tour while they were seeing each other? She clearly forgave him and went back and got over it. The song isn't that flattering but he took it in stride and didn't care too much. Also, she confirmed Treacherous and IKYWT were written about the same person. Plus she wrote Treacherous and Come Back, Be Here at the same time which points to that being about HS too.

That word 'burning' is arguably the most important word in the album. Burning invokes pain and permanence, a change in the state of things. She was there, running scared, lying on the cold hard ground, their love was sad beautiful, treacherous and tragic because it's been burned into her mind to the point where she never saw it coming and because burning is a change in state, she's never been the same because it's been seared into her psyche. Just my interpretation of course.
My theory for the end of Red is when she goes back to driving the Maserati down the dead end street, the song is starting again as if she’s going to play through all the emotions again - so she can’t let go. It just circles back to the beginning.

for Seven months after RED came out i slept listening to one song and one song only. I Almost Do. I'd turn it on, sleep with it on all night, and turn it off only when I left for school. For some reason the melancholy sound is so comforting to me, but also to this day tears me apart. So i agree, extremely underrated
unpopular opinion.... i actually really like stay stay stay. it's such a cute song and it just makes me feel so happy like while im singing it i can relate to all the happy couples in books and movies that i've seen... it's a great balance of joy in this album that all of us call the heartbreak album and while i understand why some people dont like it as much as the rest of the album, it definitely shouldnt be as hated as much as it is by some people
Treacherous has such a special place in my heart, something about that song makes me want to stand out the car sunroof and feel cathartic lol. And the lyrics...so perfect.
I think Sad Beautiful tragic is for sure a song about JG. The line "kiss me, try to fix it, could you just try to listen?" perfectly describes the scene after the fight in the kitchen in the "All Too Well short film" where he kisses her head and says I'm sorry repeatedly. He is not even trying to understand her point of view (and he probably doesn't want to) so he just kisses her to end the fight. Moreover, in the song she refers to their relationship as a "love affair", exactly as she does in All Too Well.
I was thinking about the lyric “you come around and the armour falls” from state of grace and was like, was she using armour as a metaphor for an emotional wall she’s put up and the presence of this new person who’s made mistakes too just makes her armour fall away because she feels safe. I kinda feel the structure of All Too Well is also a perfect description of that state of heartbreak we can all relate to, cause throughout the song we know that she feels devastated, but there are moments where she tries to find some hope reminding herself that he still have that scarf, or trying to balance the bad stuff by recalling something so simple but so intimate like "Dancing around the kitchen in the refrigerator light". It's very vulnerable, because it's really hard to admit that you can't deal with the situation of someone not loving you anymore. A masterpiece.

Okay, here’s my counter arguments to the theory that songs on Red are about Harry Styles… 1. Red was released in October 2012, which was before Taylor and Harry were ever spotted together on a date…. So how could Taylor write a breakup song about Harry (IKYWT) before they even started dating? 2. The story arch of Red is told in a linear fashion, meaning it starts with her meeting Jake, follows the ups and downs of that relationship and then ends with her moving on from him and meeting someone new. Taylor wrote Begin Again about her first date after breaking up with Jake - I think we all know the first person she dated after Jake was Conor Kennedy - so again, why would she end the album with a song about moving on from Jake and going on her first date with Conor, but then also have songs about Harry (whom she dated after Conor) sprinkled in the middle of the album? Doesn’t make cohesive sense to me. 3. I’ve heard that Temper Trap was one of Jake’s favourite bands, so the references to Sweet Disposition (Treacherous and All Too Well) could definitely be about Jake instead of Harry. 4. The hidden message in Red is “SAG”, which I don’t take to mean Sagittarius, but actually a reference to the Screen Actor’s Guild awards show where Taylor supposedly first met Jake. This leads to my 5th point… 5. The hidden message in IKYWT is “When you saw me dancing”, which many have speculated is referring to Jake seeing Taylor dancing at the SAG awards when they first met. Also, the line in IKYWT “flew me to places I’d never been” could refer to when Jake flew her to London for the weekend - I’m not sure if Harry ever flew her anywhere… but I digress. To sum up, the timeline and so many references to Jake throughout Red make me seriously doubt that any of the songs are about Harry. It just doesn’t add up to me. The breakup songs are about Jake, and the last few songs about moving on after a breakup (Begin Again, Everything Has Changed) are about Conor Kennedy. She doesn’t start writing about Harry until 1989 which has a very different tone than the relationship she speaks about in Red - the breakup songs on 1989 are less devastating than anything on Red which makes sense given how differently her relationships with Jake and Harry ended. Love this (and you both) so much! A note about I Almost Do: The Red album came out the year that I turned 22. I was finishing my last years of college, miles and miles away from my family, and my long-distance relationship of about a year and a half with my first real love had just ended. Thankfully, it wasn’t a terrible ending, and we remained friends, but he essentially realized that our relationship didn’t have a future in which we would both be happy before I did, and so he ended things. The album in general was so descriptive of my feelings at that time, but more than any of them, I Almost Do was the song that I put on to cry to and exorcise my lingering feelings about things. Because even though we were still friends, and we would still talk and keep each other updated on our lives, there were times he would call and I wouldn’t pick up, because I just couldn’t. For the exact reasons that Taylor talks about in I Almost Do. In summary: Definitely underrated in my opinion, and while objectively All Too Well is the best song on the album (and I think, to date, still her best written song), I Almost Do was my song, and it helped me get through a year of heartbreak until I got Closure. Love you guys so, so much! I can’t wait to experience the NEW RED with you guys!
"Moving on from him is impossible when I still see it all in my head...burning red" I always thought that she said burning red because first it was seared into her brain, and second that she was still in pain over it but now I'm also thinking when you're "seeing red" you're angry but you also see red when you have rose tinted glasses on. So I'm thinking in a way, she can't move on because of all of the things listed, the love, the passion, the heartbreak but that she still has the ability to see that old relationship with rose tinted glasses. Best way to explain it is like in that episode in How I Met Your Mother, when they talk about "Graduation Glasses" you hated High School but when you graduate you start missing it even when being there was hell. It's like that but in a relationship. So you start yearning, and missing that old relationship but when you do that you completely forget why you broke up in the first place, hence the very confusing feeling. But the fact that she said burning red, it kinda implies that she's getting there, she realizes it wasn't that great so it comes off as more angry now

The Last Time really is one of her most underrated songs ever, it's so good. Also even though at first glance it's just an ultimatum, like "This is the last time I give you your chance and after that we're done", I actually think it's about not being able to separate for good. The words "This is the last time" are repeated so much throughout the song, especially at the end where they just say it over and over again sounding almost desperate, it feels like every time they want to convince themselves it's their last shot together but they can't actually make it end
I just like this idea, which also makes the song really ironic because it means "The Last Time" is about how you aren't able to make it the last time
‘It never ever occurred to you, that I can’t say hello to you and risk another good bye’ is one of my favourite lyrics ever, I almost do is underrated, there is just something about it. it is so tender and romantic, but it’s the dream of that because she wishes she could have that but she knows if she went back, it wouldn’t be what she imagined and romanised. I have to say, I really don't think IKYWT is about Harry Styles. Personally, I think it makes much more sense for it to be about John Mayer, because yes, she briefly dated Harry before Red came out, but then she dated him for longer before 1989. If Harry had treated her like IKYWT implies, I don't think she would have gone back to him, much less written all the very flattering songs about him on 1989. The reason I think it's John Mayer is for two reasons: the whole concept of IKYWT is that she knew he wasn't good for her, but she went for it anyway and now blames herself for how it all turned out, which reminds me of "my mother accused me of losing my mind, but I swore I was fine". Also, the bridge is very reminiscent of a line in the song "Half of My Heart" which she sang with John Mayer, where at one point he sings "half of my heart is the part of a man who's never truly loved anything".

I think Sad Beautiful tragic is for sure a song about JG. The line "kiss me, try to fix it, could you just try to listen?" perfectly describes the scene after the fight in the kitchen in the "All Too Well short film" where he kisses her head and says I'm sorry repeatedly. He is not even trying to understand her point of view (and he probably doesn't want to) so he just kisses her to end the fight.
Moreover, in the song she refers to their relationship as a "love affair", exactly as she does in All Too Well.

I kinda feel the structure of All Too Well is also a perfect description of that state of heartbreak we can all relate to, cause throughout the song we know that she feels devastated, but there are moments where she tries to find some hope reminding herself that he still have that scarf, or trying to balance the bad stuff by recalling something so simple but so intimate like "Dancing around the kitchen in the refrigerator light". It's very vulnerable, because it's really hard to admit that you can't deal with the situation of someone not loving you anymore. A masterpiece.

Okay, here’s my counter arguments to the theory that songs on Red are about Harry Styles…
1. Red was released in October 2012, which was before Taylor and Harry were ever spotted together on a date…. So how could Taylor write a breakup song about Harry (IKYWT) before they even started dating?
2. The story arch of Red is told in a linear fashion, meaning it starts with her meeting Jake, follows the ups and downs of that relationship and then ends with her moving on from him and meeting someone new. Taylor wrote Begin Again about her first date after breaking up with Jake - I think we all know the first person she dated after Jake was Conor Kennedy - so again, why would she end the album with a song about moving on from Jake and going on her first date with Conor, but then also have songs about Harry (whom she dated after Conor) sprinkled in the middle of the album? Doesn’t make cohesive sense to me.
3. I’ve heard that Temper Trap was one of Jake’s favourite bands, so the references to Sweet Disposition (Treacherous and All Too Well) could definitely be about Jake instead of Harry.
4. The hidden message in Red is “SAG”, which I don’t take to mean Sagittarius, but actually a reference to the Screen Actor’s Guild awards show where Taylor supposedly first met Jake. This leads to my 5th point…
5. The hidden message in IKYWT is “When you saw me dancing”, which many have speculated is referring to Jake seeing Taylor dancing at the SAG awards when they first met. Also, the line in IKYWT “flew me to places I’d never been” could refer to when Jake flew her to London for the weekend - I’m not sure if Harry ever flew her anywhere… but I digress.
To sum up, the timeline and so many references to Jake throughout Red make me seriously doubt that any of the songs are about Harry. It just doesn’t add up to me. The breakup songs are about Jake, and the last few songs about moving on after a breakup (Begin Again, Everything Has Changed) are about Conor Kennedy. She doesn’t start writing about Harry until 1989 which has a very different tone than the relationship she speaks about in Red - the breakup songs on 1989 are less devastating than anything on Red which makes sense given how differently her relationships with Jake and Harry ended. She’s cool with Harry now but never seemed to reconcile with Jake.

Your first point is a very common misconception, as Harry cheated on Taylor in April 2012!
Love this (and you both) so much! A note about I Almost Do:
The Red album came out the year that I turned 22. I was finishing my last years of college, miles and miles away from my family, and my long-distance relationship of about a year and a half with my first real love had just ended. Thankfully, it wasn’t a terrible ending, and we remained friends, but he essentially realized that our relationship didn’t have a future in which we would both be happy before I did, and so he ended things. The album in general was so descriptive of my feelings at that time, but more than any of them, I Almost Do was the song that I put on to cry to and exorcise my lingering feelings about things. Because even though we were still friends, and we would still talk and keep each other updated on our lives, there were times he would call and I wouldn’t pick up, because I just couldn’t. For the exact reasons that Taylor talks about in I Almost Do.
In summary: Definitely underrated in my opinion, and while objectively All Too Well is the best song on the album (and I think, to date, still her best written song), I Almost Do was my song, and it helped me get through a year of heartbreak until I got Closure.

I always thought that she said burning red because first it was seared into her brain, and second that she was still in pain over it but now I'm also thinking when you're "seeing red" you're angry but you also see red when you have rose tinted glasses on. So I'm thinking in a way, she can't move on because of all of the things listed, the love, the passion, the heartbreak but that she still has the ability to see that old relationship with rose tinted glasses. Best way to explain it is like in that episode in How I Met Your Mother, when they talk about "Graduation Glasses" you hated High School but when you graduate you start missing it even when being there was hell. It's like that but in a relationship.
So you start yearning, and missing that old relationship but when you do that you completely forget why you broke up in the first place, hence the very confusing feeling. But the fact that she said burning red, it kinda implies that she's getting there, she realizes it wasn't that great so it comes off as more angry now
