Why Kyiv subway is shrinking?

- In Kyiv, Ukraine, six subway stations have been shut down due to flooding of the tunnel and the risk of its collapse. This is a very illustrative case that once again reminds us that public transport infrastructure is important not only to build but also to maintain it well. In this video, we tell you a little bit about the situation.

It is interesting that the rest of the system did not suffer the same state of deterioration as the new expansion. I wonder if this is just a classic case of the hired company doing shoddy work. Glad no one is injured or killed before that portion is shut down for maintenance.
A guess there is a combination of factors - worse construction quality + difficult conditions of the site (under the river) + lack of maintenance (or no maintenanceat all). As I've read there are also problems at the other sections but not so critical.
Actually there are problems with green line (poor tube conditions due to unproper construction technique in between stations Slavutich, Osokorki and Pozniaki) and red line (cracks in the pilons of The Metro bridge) and blue line again (sinking tunnels near Tarasa Shevchenka station) that was diagnosed a years ago and nothing really going on with it to don't make it a disaster
I guess that most of the money that should have been used during construction finished in private pockets because of the huge corruption alleged in Ukraine at this time til today, no ?
Honestly, i wish there is more content about that construction in english. There is no "i stole your money" kind of corruption, there was "i don't care you can't do it properly, just do it to nearest election" kind of one. Mayor of Kyiv (which have nickname of "Cosmonaut" because he seemed like not out of this world dude) really rushed the construction despite the fact soviets stop metro construction here because unfavourable conditions (unstable grounds), and at construction itself multiple accidents happenned - grould was spilling out in the tunnels, and mechanized tunnel shield was broken. Which is ended at use the unmechanized shield, the part you see at the photo. Theese multiple conditions ended in tunnel just cracked open
Public transport is great. But no one ever said it was cheap or easy to keep running. Seems like the Ukrainians had more.... Pressing issues than maintenance of their public transport system
Good reminder. TTC learned that the hard way, when because of bad maintenance a mechanical trip arm failed to stop a train going through a red light, leading to the death of three passengers. This happened in 1995 (the Russell Hill Accident).
More recently, a mix of old infrastructure, maintenance issues, and political dillydallying with upgrades/replacement led to the permanent closure of Line 3 Scarborough RT in 2023. The line will be replaced by a subway extension, but because of political debates and delays with committing to the project, the subway extension only started construction in June 2021 and will not not be done until 2029-2030. Until then, shuttle buses every minute in bus lanes (and hopefully a dedicated bus way on the old alignment) will have to make do.
It should not have gotten to this situation in the first place, but endless political debates between a subway extension and light rail line or significant renovations to the existing light metro rapid transit line (needed new trains and possibly realignment of curves to make less tight, strengthening of concrete viaducts, and other structural works. Add political grandstanding about 'Scarborough deserves a subway' like it is a status symbol and good old blame game. Meanwhile, Vancouver's SkyTrain built to the same technology just a couple years after the Scarborough RT, has its fourth model of train being built, and is one of the best and most frequent rapid transit systems in Canada.
Just so you know, no one is bombing Canada so our politicians can't use war as an excuse. I hope Russia stops the war and Ukraine is able to fix that line quickly.
Failed state!!!1111 Jokes aside - it's a system problem. You have to invest money not only into building new infrastructure, but also into maintenance of existing one. Ignoring maintainance will cost you more money and emergency work in future. But if course it's too complicated for populists, who rule most of the cities.
This is exactly what I wanted to say with this video - the infrastructure needs to be constantly maintained.

Actually not, correct spelling is "Kyiv". That's how it sounds in Ukrainian.

It is not. Don't spread misinformation. Kyiv is the proper way.
When I went there everybody was talking Russian. In my language it is called Kiev. The way kievians call their city in their language has absolutely no impact on how it is said, Kiev, in my language.
