I agree! I've had Xiaomi stuff in the studio for years, even before they were that well known in the west! The original Xiaomi mi mix is one of my favourite phones to have ever been released... well ahead of its time it was.
But miui sucks on their phones same as Camera quality. I bought phone mi 11t but as always the cameras were tragic which is a pity because the phone seemed brilliant.

I had a Xiaomi phone a number of years ago, I think it must have been a batch that were in a container that fell off the truck here in Panama! It was primarily in Chinese and took quite a while to find out change to English. I have been mainly a Samsung user, and went to put an S22 pro on my contract, $400 down and about $120 a month until death. I thought this was getting a bit silly paying for what really are upgrades but not ground shattering. I had bought a Xiaomi tablet which I was really pleased with at a very reasonable price. So I walked around the corner to the Xiaomi store and walked out with a Redmi 11T pro 5g for under $300, prepared to be disappointed, probably on the camera front but not so. The battery, I don't need to charge for two days, and with 67W charging it is recharged in about 30 to 40 mins. Sorry I digress, today I went to the store to get the S1 watch, I wanted the black but it will not be in until the next week, your review though has led me to believe I have made the right choice and will be looking forward to letting you know how I get on with it.... Thanks again for the great content!
Great review and I agree with the 'this could be the watch I've been waiting for' though in my case it would be the sapphire crystal glass that is the proverbial icing'. This alone is worth many ££££'s extra. I also agree with your enthusiasm for all the feature sets included, especially Alexa and NFC But i may have missed your comment, so I assume like it's Amazfit relations, one cannot reply to texts etc. And again i agree with the shared platform OS issues, and at best is unpolished, at worst is downright horrible to use. However I must take issue with 'budget watch'. At best these are mid range, whilst the premium model is closer to market leader prices rather than budget.
Nice review. I know you are looking for more tech to review. Personally I think this is a good example. Lower end smart watches. BUT - to be serious in this we need two things. 1. Heart rate accuracy review (often dire/pointless on cheap products). 2. GPS accuracy - mostly a mixed bag at the lower end. Hope you can add these dimensions in future. Check out DC Rainmaker to see how he tackles it at the higher end.
All good points, Andy, and always greatful for the feedback. To let you in on my own thought process - however im trying to offer as much as I can but keep the runtime under 15 (and also keep it interesting... if I keep doing the same tests over and over again for each device, it makes me stagnate)! In regards to HR - I tend not to test the accuracy as almost all smartwatches don't have a medically certified HR monitor, and they all have notations in the Ts and Cs that the HR is meant only to be a guideline (even more expensive brands like Apple have this notation). I've mentioned this quite a lot too 👍 Take these episodes as a summary of the tech as a whole rather than a nitty gritty episode!

Not sure when the official date for stocking in UK vendors is, but you should be able to get your hands on the global version either directly from china (counterintuitively) or accross in europe.
Can you make a detailed video of calling feature? Like normally I wear earbuds & they are connected to my phone, so when someone calls me and if I answer the call from my watch, so will the audio from the person calling me will come through the earbuds or the watch? And during an ongoing call do we have an option to change the audio from watch to phone and vice-versa, from the watch itself, or will i have to pull out my phone from the pocket to do so? Great review Stu. still rocking my original amazfit gtr1, I think as nfc improves I will look to upgrade, I like that some of the amazfit watches can have mp3 stored so you can listen to music of out exercising without your phone for example. Zepp app isn't that great though.
GTR 1 was (and still is) one of my favourite smartwatches... It really changed the game for budget wearables and im super thankful for that! This is in another league though!
I havent reviewed it but ive got a ticwatch 3 pro. Great device, and benefits from wear os... but quite big, and battery life stuggles past a few days.

Another fab review. I have an older Apple Watch and will change soon. Now being in the apple universe is comforting after all I’m over 50. But I’m beginning to think this might be my mistake. I use limited function and the battery life is still hopeless on the apple watches. So the S1 might be a contender. But my interest is with some training but mostly the health functions like ECG. I wondered if (now your a father and these things become more heightened then) if you consider reviewing health components of smart wear sometime in the future. Honestly your entertainment component is 50% of why I watch (pun intended) but also the tech insight. Good stuff mate.
As much as I love apple devices... The Apple Watch was one device that I just couldn't get on with when I worked for them! Don't get me wrong - some of the features have absolutely no competition, but its bulky design and absolutely poor battery as you mentioned turns me right off it! I always expectd them to bring out an Apple Watch 'lite' of some sorts, with reduced tracking features in exchange for much longer battery life, but many years later... im still waiting!

really good video, but i have a questions, im from france and the price for the s1 is 269 euro and the s1 active 169 euro. Idk why he have a 100 euro difference between the two ? i hope its gonna change quicly.
The only real difference is that the S1 is more premium and made from more premium materials such as the Sapphire Glass and it has a more premium design, other than that, I can't think of reasons for the S1 to cost 100 euros more.
Cheap bands that say they can do blood pressure are incorrect. The only way to accurately read blood pressure is via an actual blood pressure test which involves creating a pressure ring around your arm.

Yes i would consider it budget when compared to other smartwatches, like apple watch series 7 at £369, Galaxy Watch4 Classic at £319, i would consider the S1 range budget at around £200 and under, but still serious enough to compete as a decent smartwatch.

I got an S1 for Christmas. Great build quality but the Alexa feature (which is why I wanted the watch in the first place) is next to useless. It disconnects from the phone within minutes, in order to get it back working you need to open the app on your phone and re-sync the phone to the watch, thus making the Alexa feature truly pointless for the watch.
The watch is ok but suport is therible and most of functions not working because of bad app . Update and there is no more watch faces, sensors not working, sinhronization fail....Never again Xiaomi!
