I first discovered THE OCEAN in 2013 with their album Pelagial, which I loved. It was also pure coincidence that I was in a band called DEFY THE OCEAN. But I have no intention of defying them, I love these guys!
What will the boys have in store for me in "Jurassic | Cretaceous"? SPOILER ALERT, it's an absolutely incredible piece of work, and truly one of the best things I've heard in metal in a long time. This reaction to THE OCEAN is the best song I've covered to far.
This is part of the Release Radar series, where I check out the latest releases from artists that I like (or have liked/followed in the past) there's a lot of good, but probably some not so good in there too. As always, my honest reaction will prevail, I am incapable of lying.
As a singer and producer for experimental rock group DEFY THE OCEAN, I like to bring a little extra flavour to my reactions, making observations about the production and the songwriting. Something I don't see much of on CZcams right now.

I really discovered them when Pelagial was just released and remember thinking it was a clever album full of stunning parts with a great theme. Then they go on tour with Mastodon, then they come to New Zealand, then do a headlining show in Christchurch. Then me and Troika get the opening slot. One of the best moments of my life as a musician. Made some real connections with the guys in The Ocean. Loïc being from Switzerland we spoke all night about life and other things. Then they came back to Christchurch again March 2019 for phanerozoic part 1. And again spent the night with guys. Robin's concepts are out of the world

These guys are great human beings. I remember going to a concert of theirs in Groningen, The Netherlands. After the most ridiculously great concert of our collective lives, these guys just go to the staircase in the hallway and smoke some cigs there. We started talking and talking... and talking. We went backstage and I left somewhere around 4 am after drinking beers and having philosophical discussions all night.
Can't state enough how much these guys are just the best human beings.

Vocal during verse is also Jonas Renske (Katatonia) and Loic provides harsh vocals on chorus.

I remember you sharing Pelagial with me back in the day and absolutely falling in love with it. That album will always hold a special place for me, but this new track has completely blown me away. This is probably the best thing I've heard in metal for a long while. This is now my third listen through and it's phenomenal on every level - songwriting, transitions, performance, production, dynamics, atmosphere, the emotional journey. The vocals from both front-men are amazing. The drumming and drum production is top notch, without even mentioning the bass, guitars and use of synths.
There's so much to say but you've already summed everything up so well. That mean section at 13:18 with the L & R panned lead hits so damn hard and is a real highlight for me.

Dude, seeing your reaction to this album I'm 100% sure you would be blown away by the latest album of Black Crown Initiate - Veiled Portraits of Doomed Escape. That album is album of the year for me, followed by Phanerozoic II at number 2. You should do a reaction to songs from that album. I suggest Holy Silence, or Invitation. The album should be enjoyed as a whole, though. On repeat for the desired effect.

Hi Theo, fantastic reaction. As said before, breaking down the song instead of just listening adds to the experience of watching your video instead of just the song itself. You've made me hear things I haven't thought about in my first 200 listens of the song.
If you want something as similarly dense in instrumentation / conceptualisation / ideation I'd suggest The Dear Hunter. A good place to start would be A Night on the Town, The Bitter suite IV: The Congregation and the Sermon in the Silt or Gloria.
    Be warned though.
If you like what you hear; It's a 5 part album series that tells an overarching story with each song. It's a rabbit hole of epic proportions.

Really glad you enjoyed it! I'm actually already very familiar with The Dear Hunter and that series of albums, as well as their colour EPs. Great band with a huge amount of variety across their discography!

What an awesome song! I've been listening to it along with Palaozoic all day while I work. Really enjoying finding new interesting tracks from your reviews. It would be great to hear you review of Estradasphere, Smuggled Mutation. Not a recent track or anything, but I think it's got a level of variety within that you may enjoy.

Love how you broke the track apart and dissected it! 👌 From one Chris to another, if you haven't checked out the band O'Brother yet, you should react to one of their newest tracks 'Leave Me Out'! A beautiful haunting blend of post-rock with elements of some doomy sludge brilliance.

If the rest of the album tracks this well it will be epic. I was not the biggest fan of Phanerozoic 1 it seemed muddled to me. I felt the same about Anthropocentric Vs Heliocentric Anthro was more muddled and less clean sounding. That being said this is one of the greatest bands of this generation. I saw them live on Pelagial at The Circle Bar in New Orleans. Loics microphone set up just would not work yet he still sang/screamed his ass off into a non-working mic knowing it did not work. when they could have just played it as the instumental version.

    • @FriedTheo
      @FriedTheo  Před 4 lety +1

Pelagial is their most cohesive work to date for me. Anthropocentric I agree was a little muddled but had some of my favourite moments from them.
Right now I'm just happy to have 13 mins of superb new music, but it's promising.

Worth adding the following from an interview with Robin Staps:
“‘Phanerozoic II‘ is more experimental, more eclectic in musical style and direction, and more varied in terms of tempos, beats, guitar work and the use of electronics,” notes Staps. “This was an intentional choice: we wanted Part I to feel rather streamlined and to have a strong cohesion between the individual songs. We wanted to create a certain vibe to linger from the first until the last note throughout the whole record. We kept the weirder, more daring and more progressive material for Part II.”
