Why Female Mountaineers Don't Climb K2.

  • Towering at an uninhabited border stretch between Pakistan and China, K2 is a very difficult mountain. It is called the 'savage mountain' because of its difficulty and real challenge. The ascent to its peak is riddled with slippery, sheer slopes of ice, including the feared "bottleneck", a 100-metre slope with a gradient of 80 to 90 degrees close to the summit. The first woman to scale its summit was Poland's Wanda Rutkiewicz, considered the greatest woman mountaineer. She stood on top of the mountain on June 23 1986, just hours ahead of Frenchwoman Liliane Barrard.

You failed to mention Cecilie Skog who summited with Lars Nessa on August 1, 2008. They were the first Norwegians to summit K2 and were part of the 2008 expedition where 11 other climbers died. Reaching the summit is reaching the top. It is an achievement in itself. It’s like scoring an achievement in a game. A goal in soccer/football or a home run in baseball counts for the player even if the team loses the game.
I can understand though not counting a summit climb with a failed descent, though, if you say the climber didn’t pace themselves well or was too slow or late to avoid climbing in darkness. It’s hard to criticize a failed descent because you’re talking about a recently deceased person. It seems a tricky topic. I see the comment that someone has decided. Idk if all climbers follow that person’s judgement. If so, there it is.

I really detest the woke crowd, but the implications from this video are pre-90's relic mountaineering sexism (famously Arelene Blum was told she could climb to 20k feet and cook for the men, but couldn't climb to the summit and Hillary made a huge fuss about a guy's wife joining them at base camp due a woman joining them). Can you provide any data that there is a statistical difference between the number of women who climb Annapurna and K2, or Kenchunja and K2? The lack of any real data here other than "women summitted the hardest mountain in the world later on than men", which is true about every large mountain, is where the obvious sexist implications exist.
If women lead a climb and men were on that climb, would that somehow change the accomplishment of those men?
Or alternatively, not many women have climbed K2 because women couldn't even climb with men for decades after the famous 50s-60s 8000m climbs, and the Karakoram requires women to go through Pakistan not too far from the Afghan border. Unfortunately, that means women have to add another layer of contemplation and safety considerations that men do not have to.

Its not just natural endurance its the lack of perspiration and women require about 5% more oxygen, higher lung ventilation higher respiratory demands. Women have a much higher vascular sensitivity to cold so their blood flow shuts down sooner and are more prone to things like Acute Mountain Sickness or High Altitude Cerebral Edemas which in at least one case wiped out an entire all woman climbing group.
