When Even Plan C Fails...

  • Spring has been SO busy on the homestead. As a result, I've had little time for backpacking. So, when I finally did get some free time, I decided to give this trip I was looking forward to a shot. Although parts would be challenging, I felt up to the task. But sometimes months of meticulous research and careful planning aren’t enough. Sometimes a back-up plan isn’t enough either...

It’s the best decision to know when to turn around! Sometimes those revised adventures make the best memories and can definitely be great learning lessons!

Looked like great times still, even though plans had changed a few times!

At the end of the day a trip outdoors is still time well spent!

Oh man. I had to turn around on my last trip too. I get it. I have 2 Nemo pads, and they are lightweight and comfortable, but both have developed leaks. One was definitely user error, the other ended up being mfr defect and covered under warranty. But when they go flat in the middle of the night, nothing else matters. Still a success even when things all go wrong. That's how we learn, and that's how we grow!

      No way! What happened?
Nemo pads are so light and comfy, but after having to repair three now myself, I wonder if the tradeoff is durability 😕
Absolutely right! Still count it a success.

@@SeagrasstoSassafras We had a series of unfortunate events like you...blowdowns everywhere, a late start, a tough climb up a mountain, etc. It was a learning experience for sure!
I've actually been using a Thermarest Neoair Topo Luxe sleeping pad most of the past 8 or 9 months...when my uninsulated Nemo started leaking, I submitted a warranty request and it was peak thru-hiking season, so they warned me it might take awhile to respond. I had picked up the Topo Luxe as a spare pad, found and "irregular" one for about $100, and just started using it. It was the end of summer so I kept using it. It has a 3.7 R Value. Heavier than the Nemo (26 oz for the regular/wide), but also more sturdy. I used it most of the winter also. Had to repair my winter Nemo pad again and now am a bit gun shy about those pads. My hiking partner uses a Sea to Summit women's Etherlight XT and loves it. I'd say Nemo and that one are the most comfortable, but the regular NeoAir is lighter. I'm at a point in life where I don't want to sacrifice comfort for peace of mind. But Nemo sent me a brand new pad, so...might need to try it.

I'm sorry to hear that! It can be real disheartening when one thing after another hinders the trip.
😲 I'll need to check out the topo luxe for Jordan. One of his biggest issues with sleeping pads is comfort. The typical 2.5 - 3 inch pads just aren't supportive enough. I'm glad you got a replacement from Nemo. Hopefully 🤞 it doesn't have any leaks or defects.

@@SeagrasstoSassafras awesome! I did some day hiking up here in Wisconsin yesterday. Going over to Pictured Rock National Seashore soon and backpack the trail for a few days. It is beautiful and I want to see it while I’m up here

Sounds like you're having a great time out there 😊 Just looked at a few pictures. Wow! I can't believe how blue / green the water is 😲 and the mineral stains on some of the rock formations are just incredible. Happy trails!

Ah, Sam Knob ... The place where my backpacking career began. Like you, this little sweet spot between Middle Prong and Shining Rock wildernesses is my go-to. Enjoying the videos. Let me know if you ever make it back out to the Uwharries.

Will do! Winter is my favorite time to go to Uwharrie. I did an overnight with a friend in January. It was 20 something degrees, we froze our butts off, it was great 😆

I bet so. The Uwharries are great during the cooler months, but are miserable in the summer. For me, higher elevations are a must to negate some of the heat.
