  • Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell wants to spend $1.2 million to “rejuvenate” Ala Moana Park. Local residents are wary of the “improvements.” 81-year old Myrna Ariola has a message for the mayor. This outspoken park user gives the mayor a piece of her mind.

    Myrna, mahalo, for keeping the park clean, and for your thoughts! You make good sense.

    Great message, Myrna! I've been to that park. Leave it alone, Mayor Caldwell! Or at least add more workers to maintain it!

      Red Dirt Report Just hope Caldwell and his friends in the legislature not thinking of selling the park to developers .

    I agree, come down and hear the "VOICES" of the people. The very same people who PUT YOU IN OFFICE.

    Myrna Ariola is right on track, as Alamoana is the park most used by local residents. More funding should be dedicated to staffing, cleaning and upkeep, but rejuvenation, if not serving the current high population of users (i.e. designed to serve the Kakaako development), would be a tragic loss. I would ask why the City Planning Department wasn't able to do the necessary work, and why $1.2 million would be paid to consultants from afar who may have innovative ideas, but who cannot be sensitive to local culture and the considerations that should be taken into account. Thank you, Myrna, for voicing many of them. It's probably too late to recoup the loss of planning funds, but it's not too late to keep the integrity of the place in focus. It is a park, not an income engine, and the cost of its upkeep is part of the cost of living in Honolulu - to be borne by all. We're all glad to pay that cost as long as it serves the actual public.

    What a wonderful and gracious lady Myrna is. What a treasure for the people of Hawaii. She is civic minded and believes in doing her part...oh to have politicians with even a fraction of her work ethic but I guess that is wishing for the impossible. My hat is off to Myrna. I wish I knew her...I already like her.

    Bless you for what you do!!! Tell the mayor like it is. Keep Ala Moana as it is. I'm convinced the proposed renovations are for benefit of those snooty rich folks who have/will be snapping up those super expensive condos in Kakaako. So obvious.

    For the 2017-2018 City Budget, Mayor Kirk Caldwell wants $20 Million to upgrade Ala Moana Park. On the other hand, Caldwell wants to raise parking fees, vehicle fees, property taxes, garbage collection fees and so on.

    You tell'em mom. That's exactly what I've been saying. If it ain't broke don't fix it and in the case of the rail the solution seems to be worse than the problem.

      @jariol Před 9 lety +1

      Yep here you on that. If you notice people like the mayor are really pushing things like construction. And who does the mayor owe the biggest debt to? THE CONSTRUCTION RELATED UNIONS WERE HE MAYORS BIGGEST SUPPOTERS! I'm no giant fan of Cayetano but if you remember out of all the politicians the most campaign money was spent by the Carpenters Union and Pacific Resource Partnership. It's no wonder there is so much construction planned. Caldwell sold his soul and now he has to pay up. BTW that goes for Ige as well!

    Mr, Mayor, you mean to say you can´t find people in Honolulu with interesting ideas to enhance the Ala Moana Park? How about talking to Myrna Ariola? $1.2 million is a lot of money.

    You go Girl, Miss Myrna!!! You are voicing what many are afraid to say publicly. It's just like the Rail......I am/WAS in favor of increasing the existing 'The Bus' service instead. There's nothing wrong with The Bus; why do we need The Rail? You're absolutely right, Miss Myrna: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
