OKAY PEOPLE!! Listen, I just made this video I made just for fun, I was around fifteen at the time it was made! I tried my best to match descriptions to the words, some of them I couldn't find, so I put what sounded like the word being said example cookey = cookie monster because it sounded like the "cookey" as it was being said. The lyrics below were copied straight from the a lyric site, if they are wrong, blame the site, NOT ME!!!!
IF YOU POST VULGAR OR DOWNRIGHT MEAN COMMENTS, I WILL DELETE YOUR COMMENT.
One more thing, I can't seem to find this song anywhere, I believe I downloaded it off of Limewire, and I got a new computer. So that could explain why I cannot find this version with the exact lyrics or singing anywhere.
Oh wow!!! Over 500,000 views and 2,000 likes and it's still growing!!!! Never thought I'd get this far! :) Enjoy.
These are the lyrics to the song. . .
Fifteen men on a dead man's chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
The mate was fixed by the bosun's pike
The bosun brained with a marlinspike
And cookey's throat was marked belike
It had been gripped by fingers ten;
And there they lay, all good dead men
Like break o'day in a boozing ken.
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
Fifteen men of 'em stiff and stark
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Ten of the crew had the murder mark!
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers' glut with a rotting red
And there they lay, aye, damn my eyes
Looking up at paradise
All souls bound just contrariwise
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
Fifteen men of 'em good and true
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Ev'ry man jack could ha' sailed with Old Pew,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
There was chest on chest of Spanish gold
With a ton of plate in the middle hold
And the cabins riot of stuff untold,
And they lay there that took the plum
With sightless glare and their lips struck dumb
While we shared all by the rule of thumb,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Fifteen men on a dead man's chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
Fifteen men on a dead man's chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
And a yo ho ho!

You did an awesome job dude
Well now you are 22😂😂
Cookie Monster was awesome ta!
It’s great though
Why would you change anything about this masterpiece
For those who are wondering:
The song is about a ship discovering another ship run aground on a reef called the 'Dead Man's Chest' (Because at low tide the rocks looked like the front of a rib cage sticking out of the water) and that the grounded ship had been a privateer or pirate vessel that hit a spanish treasure ship, and that the crew suffered a mutiny over the stolen treasure.
During the fighting, the ship had been full sail, nobody had been on lookout or manning the helm, and the ship ran aground onto the Dead Man's Chest and became stuck fast. After the fighting was over, half the crew was dead and there was not enough people alive to push the vessel back off the reef.
So the greedy murderous mutineers were stranded there on the reef until they died too, most likely from dehydration ('drink and the devil be done for the rest' means 'all we can do is have a drink in their memory, they're dead'), without any hope of escaping. And to add insult to injury, they didn't even get to keep the treasure in death because the ship DIDN'T SINK and the discovering ship salvaged the plate (gold bars) and chest of coin ('We sure go by the rule of thumb' means 'You lost it, we found it, finders keepers')
The discovering crew gave them all ocean burials, took the treasure that killed everyone, and is drinking to the memory of the good men who were murdered, and the ironic fate of their murderers, and on top of that, how both of their losses were THEIR gain.
Thank you, that was a wonderful retelling!! Where can I read more?
@@gatacelta I'm not sure, I'm just familiar with the lingo and the song. The song itself originates from the book Treasure Island, which is a great read.
Would this mean the correct lyric is "Fifteen men on the Dead Man's Chest" , and not "Fifteen men on a dead man's chest"?
@heisag The song is referring to the fact that Dead Man's Chest is a reef that looks like a rib cage sticking out of the water... so it looks like they are on a dead man's chest, literally sitting on a rib cage.
It's being a bit poetic.
I think the rule of thumb has more to do with how the treasure is divided amongst the crew, not "finders keepers"
But... the rum is gone. Why is the rum gone?! >:(

Why's the rum gone?

So many lyrics left out of this version...
More was seen through a sternlight screen...
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Chartings undoubt where a woman had been
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
'Twas a flimsy shift on a bunker cot
With a dirk slit sheer through the bosom spot
And the lace stiff dry in a purplish blot
Oh was she wench or some shudderin' maid
That dared the knife and took the blade
By God! she had stuff for a plucky jade
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
Fifteen men on a dead man's chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
We wrapped 'em all in a mains'l tight
With twice ten turns of a hawser's bight
And we heaved 'em over and out of sight,
With a Yo-Heave-Ho! and a fare-you-well
And a sudden plunge in the sullen swell
Ten fathoms deep on the road to hell,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
+Vamp Manson You forgot to fly away Captain.
Those verses seem like they might have been contributed by a different author from the ones used in the video.
The verses in the video form sort of a tight coherent tale of fascinated horror at otherwise competent pirates who succumbed to "drink and the devil" because they didn't check themselves before they wrecked themselves, concluding logically with the protagonists taking the treasure that those pirates would otherwise have had.
The verses you have here take on more of a tone of ghoulish bloodlust, with the random dead woman, stabbed between the tits of course, where the verse itself can't explain what she would have been doing there in a song that refers specifically to men in the chorus, title, and previous verse, and then the part about the disposal of the bodies.
I wouldn't be surprised if actual pirates had liked ghoulish bloodlust verses like that, not that I know any pirates, but if I remember right, the first verses seem more consistent with the tone of Treasure Island where I thought the song concept originated (not that Robert Louis Stevenson wrote those verses either).
So maybe there are legitimate alternate versions, with contributions by different authors with different overall song concepts? I don't mean that any of them are necessarily very recent, it just seems like different versions of what the song is about. Then again the U.S. national anthem has a verse by the same author that seems to clash with the usual modern interpretation of that song.
@@Innocent_Villain verse five is about finding a suicided or murdered maid, verse 6 is the clean up.
Thanks.🏴☠

My parents downloaded me a CD of Pirate Music as a gift before we took a vacation to go to a Maritime museum; I have no idea where they got this song, and I wish I could find it and the other songs on the CD. But I have no idea who made it.
Next time I go home, I'm going to dig through my bedroom - virtually untouched by my parents since I moved out - and see if I can't find that CD.
Upload if you find it, plz :D

Sayin’ “Times be getting’ lean!”

Robert Louis Stevenson wrote the original lyrics and inserted them in his iconic novel Treasure Island. He wrote only two stanzas: the "fifteen men" verse and one more, "With one man of her crew alive/Yo ho ho etc/What put to sea with seventy-five/Yo ho ho etc." I don't know who came up with the tune this video's version is sung to; the melody I learned as a child is in an audio adaptation of the book that was issued on an LP narrated by Basil Rathbone:
