  • What do you know about penguins? You probably know they can't fly and instead swim effortlessly in water. (In fact, they can swim up to 25 miles an hour!) In Penguins for Kids, you'll learn a lot more cool facts about these unique birds! For one, not all of them live in cold places, as in Antarctica. Some actually live in warmer climates off the coast of Ecuador!
The majority of penguins are between one and four feet tall and have the iconic black backs and white bellies. This coloring gives off an effect called countershading that helps them avoid predators. They eat small fishes, squid, and other ocean animals. But it doesn't matter what these meals taste like because penguins have no sense of taste! Scientists examined their DNA and learned that no penguins can taste sweet, bitter, or umami flavors.
Right now, penguins struggle to battle climate change, overfishing, and water pollution. They have to deal with habitat destruction and new predators, too. Their food supply starts to dwindle, which means they have to swim further and further out to find food. This can be dangerous for them. Some species, like the yellow-eyed penguin, are in danger of extinction. There are only about 4,000 left.
