Touring lead guitarist Dave Catching, guitarist/frontman Jesse Hughes, and bassist Matt McJunkins were gracious enough to chat about their setups before the band's sold-out show at the High Noon Saloon in Madison, WI, on 9/10/15.
Catching quickly became friends with luthier Gabriel Currie who opened is Echopark Guitars shop across from the band’s rehearsal studio. Currie, a big fan of the guitarist and his many bands, built a replica of a 1958 Gibson Flying V that Catching uses throughout most EODM sets because “it plays perfect and never goes out of tune.” He strings up all his guitars with Ernie Ball Slinkys .010-0.48. Also, he and Hughes play the same open-G tuning all night-G-G-D-G-B-D.
Loyal to one brand, boogiemaster frontman/guitarist Jesse Hughes plays nothing but Maton 6-strings live. The one on the left is a custom-made MS500 that features lightning bolts instead of f-holes and hotter-wound humbuckers that allow Hughes to not use any pedals because they get him right to the edge where clean and distorted meet. The silverbust axe on the right is another custom-made creation-this is a baritone version of Maton’s MS T-Byrd that the Austrailian company gifted Hughes when they heard he recorded some baritone tracks on the just-released album Zipper Down. (The MS T-Byrd also features a single lightning bolt and hotter pickups.)

If the guys at PG get Josh Homme or anybody from QOTSA to show their rig, the Internet will be an even better place.
There is one already, but they don't show Josh Homme's rig, apparently he likes to keep it a secret.
+Pedro Ramos We got to sit down with Troy of QOTSA - czcams.com/video/rAUJRiwjboE/video.html
+Gabriel Flores Probably because he thinks you should try exploring your own sound instead of trying emulate someone else's.
+Premier Guitar Yes, I forgot about that one. Thanks PG!
+sacredgeometry Yes, it's for our own good. Josh Homme is very "tough love" when it comes to showing his gear; he knows we can't be trusted not to copy him.
"The symbol for gain is a fucking fist!" LOL! Well fucking said!
I had to pause the video because I was laughing so hard when he said that! That was great.
Laughed so hard!
I'm gonna name my band ''SLAYER OF COUNTRY MUSIC''
and yer gonna have to pay me for the rights to use it cuz i just registered it as a band name HOOOOOOHOHOHOHOHO
@@TheRemixGeneration I’m sure slayer would like to sue you
"This is Dave catching, not saying goodnight. Just sayin."
+Sam Gordon, Dave, your old childhood friend Marc here from ole Memphis, you can still hear that old punk influence, ive tried to stay connected in one form or another,is that Bubba Burger still on the menu ,something few know, is Dave not only is a super master of the guitar but a true chef, who actually influenced my own cooking flare.Just watching the interview brought back many years of memories all of which are legendary Catching internals. My house on the ocean here in Fl is open to you if you ever just need to get away,i miss those days man, people have no idea how many bands you were actually in as a front runner/writer,with this band you dont get to really hear his expertise masked by surrounding noise.I recently figured it was your band that was there during the terrorist experience and relieved to hear no harm came to you guys,i warned you when i got back from England in 78 Europe was another planet hence another reason ill never go back unless its to visit family.Your still very much the same and glad to see that, with the heart the size of a melon,me casa su casa baby and mom sends her fond regards who is here close to me,if you need tickets to get away just write and tickets will be provided we miss you mate,my intention wasnt to write an essay here but no idea how to reach you any other way, fondest regards,Marc L the last of a handful, ill be out your way in the next few months doing my own world tour, peace and love brother, always,ya boy !
I'm glad these guys are okay. Crazy shit that just happened today and I can't imagine how they must feel to have had 100+ fans killed. My heart goes out to all of them.
Thats to bad. I know it was a long time ago, but what happened?
James Cassidy the terrorist attack in the Bataclan Paris.
23:46 - Haha, it's very cool that he says how stoked he is to be interviewed about gear. I can't be the only person watching this who.....occasionally.... fantasises about being interviewed for rig-rundown...haha (at least I admit it !!)- Now obviously that will never happen, but I just think it's cool that Jesse is as glad as anybody would be to be interviewed about his gear. That's how you know you've made it...!
Your not alone
I fantasize to. Lol but I will be on here soon. I just hope I get john bohlinger
Right there with ya, hoss...
Same here, don’t say it’ll never happen, just believe it can and work toward it
I love their approach to their sound. They all know exactly what they are doing. That's a good band.
Had been a while since I last saw a rig rundown where they actually played their gear instead of just talking about it. Nice!
+JosephGallagher Too bad it was bass
+cbappa2 For me it was awesome because it's bass!
+Toxic Potato oh and hi Toxic Potato
I like it when they just talk about it better
I remember meeting these guys when they performed in London this year. Getting to meet Josh, Jesse and Dave was simply incredible, Josh is the most humble, softly spoken man I've ever met, Jesse was a delight to hang around with, literally hugging me at least once a minute while we were chatting, and Dave, well, Dave's just the most chill dude, gave us all free "Dave Catching Loves You" badges, and let us touch his beard. His beard is a beautiful thing. So sweet to see their rigs!
Can I hug you? That sounds awesome.
Chris Valls You may, let's hug it out and listen to EODM
+Brad Lawrence dude! High five.
+Brad Lawrence and the High Five ignites a spark, that shoots to the stage and EoDM's guitars all start spitting fiery rainbows of awesome. Jesse watches, and toasts his drink to the rock!
Jesse blows a kiss to the crowd, Josh sweeps his fine ginger mane, Dave combs his mighty beard, and the whole place becomes a thousand times sexier.
I'm glad that these guys made it safe during the Paris attack, in the Bataclan ! God bless you all
I would like to find a Flying V in my closet.
I never listened to EODM until the first time I saw them live opening for mastodon I think. They burnt that place to the ground, just absolutely one of the best live performances I've seen
This video series is awesome. Not only the rig rundown but it really has opened me up to a lot of really cool bands I would not of heard of!
26:36 "so if everythings a lego thats a whole lot easier for me man" best quote ever😂😂
This was a GREAT rig rundown. Thank you. Lots to think about.
Dave Catching - what a guy!
These guys made for a fun segment/ interview. Thanks!
Love this band and this was an awesome Rig Rundown. Dave Catching is the man, and Jesse's Baritone Guitar is amazing.
Fuck yeah Dave Catching.
Jesse Hughes. Gary Oldman's bad ass brother.
Jesse's a legend - Aussie Maton guitars yeah!
Mark Abfalter Josh has a signature Maton
I saw him smash one of those Maton's in Detroit last night. Incredible. Boots is such a great performer.
They're worth every penny and they're more affordable than a Gibson Les Paul.
happy they are still alive. enjoying this à lot more.
these guys were awesome live, opened for DFA 1979 and absolutely tore it up
I bought that same Gorilla amp at the local thrift store for $15 and was pleasantly surprised when I came home... Even more pleasantly surprised as a fan to hear he uses it in the studio
I love every time you see someone's pedal the actual settings are not like the tape suggests
my mans got 4 strands of hair left and still stylin them down. thats dedication pal.
I did a rig run down with Turbonegro years ago which included every member save for vocals so it's great to see this video series.
Is your rig rundown on CZcams ? I’d loooooove to see that
Loved this episode. I Luke listening to Jesse hughes interviews.
Great Rig rundown, Thanks for including the Bass Rig! You should do that on every one. duh. and one more thing,.........How the hell did He get Jimi's Fuzz pedals??????????? That's the ultimate if it's true. LOVE all the ORANGE amps.!!!!!!!!!!!
10:06 I love this Dave Catching's philosophy. Make some noise and have fun with whatever you have.
Fendery, who'd have guessed that that would be such a descriptive adjective. Using the wah for attenuating higher gain tones is so killer
Woa, cool to know about using the fuzz pedals in a recording situation like that
My heart goes out to these guys 😪
I don't have "face melting" solos, mine are "face covering".
Haha Jesse is such a cheeky bastard.
Best post yet.
Great job guys! I did an interview with Jesse at this same show!
Love these guys, no BS at all!
that moment when your bassist is more knowledgeable and picky about gear than your lead guitarist...^^
Good rig revue . Great interviewer . Kudos.
I've been that to my open g keith Richard's tuning to. Taking the thick e string and tuning it to G to be in harmony with the 5th string. I knew somebody else had to have stumble upon it to.
Love that there was some EarthQuaker devices stuff in here! I love my Dispatch Master.
Really cool gear run down
So crazy that this was recorded just one month before the attack
You know you have problems when you can identify every pedal on his board in the first 3 seconds of the video, even though the image is completely blurred.
Love Jesse, and the lightning bolt guitar, that was my let's say signal in the 80's but Jesse is the man in the front to see and Jimi Hendrix pedal, who could ask for for 2 front gods coming together. Love the bad,and the music. They kick ass. Wanna see them in ny soon I hope.....hope...been waiting ... :) maybe I need another trip to cally. Jesse let me know. You the man!
So rad!
Holy shit Jesse Hughes is a legend, love his guitars and amps and they guy seems pretty fucking cool.
This band is the reason why I prefer Orange amps and probably will never own anything else.
I only use Orange amps because they're cheap and sound nice and dirty
@Joe Momma you won't be disappointed. They don't make a bad amp. I've got a Terror Bass 500w with a 2x12 cab. It sounds brutal and is incredibly loud.
mr Flanders know his shit :-D awesome!
I like it more when the pedals are there on the floor, not in some drawer a mile away with a bunch of midi stuff. More rock'n'roll.
To anybody making jokes about Paris, I wish you could've been there instead
Paris was no Joke
So either way you want someone to die I guess
@@tysonrinker5958 Isn't he right ?
awesome band
AWESOME
Earthquaker Devices! Great gear, excellent build quality. Like to try that Dispatch, I've got a Disaster Transport Jnr on the way.
Wow... that is strange to see a video on their rig after the attacks in Paris...
Long live the eagles of death metal and long live rock n roll.
Just plug in and play baby. Love it.
That poor 70's Flying V.
I talked with Dave I'll their dressing room after a show only weeks before the Paris attack. Just a really laid back dude.
very cool rigs
Hope these guys are safe in Paris!
+mrrintymonaghan Wow, I hope they are OK...still no news on them...updates will be here: facebook.com/eaglesofdeathmetal/
+TheDogpa THE DRUMMER SAID THEY ARE OK . SUCH A TERROR FILLED DAY IN PARIS .
Washington post just said the same. Thanks!
There are many others and crew members and other bands too...I wish them all the best...what horror!
"Dave Catching here. Not saying good night, just sayin'..."
Man, Jesse Hughes seems like such a nice, humble guy.
Dave is the man.
This bands rig rundown is my spirit animal
Where does chrome fit into the tone wood debate?
Wood as a material isn't important, and in itself not part of the discussion. Different density materials resonate differrntly, which is (said to) carry into the tone. The debate is about the different kinds of woods because usually guitars are made of wood.
I NEED that alumicaster!!!!fkkkk props to EDQ!
Learned alot
Hell Yes!
Long live Boots! Friggin love that guy.
God damn it, Jesse Hughes is the coolest dude out there
Hope the band and people at the Theater tonight in Paris are released from being Hostage soon...
Jesse boots electric! Love that f*in guitar! You guys fucking rock!
Bad ass!
I met Electric Boots in Santa Cruz about 8 years ago. One of the nicest most down to earth people you will ever meet. He was complementing the AC-DC t-shirt on a lady with enormous breasts. He had a smoke out front of the Catalyst with everyone waiting in line. One of the funnest nights of my life.
Every Rig Rundown: "I don't use pedals... let me tell you about my pedals"
Ok now I heard Jesse, Joshua and Dave Grohl all say they think of the guitar as a drum. And they all said their grandpa told them "people are gonna throw rocks at ya, so ya better learn to love rocks". I wonder who should take cred for those two quotes
Arvid W they've all known each other for quite a while so who knows who came up with it.
Hope these guys are all ok!!
Jesse Hughes might be a coonta, but out of all the guitarists ive heard talk about their stuff i agree with him 100% then i saw he's got the baritone as well, and when he says about the smokey and gorilla amp. Hes got one of the best sounds.
i love my OR50, i don't see too much love for these amps. i actually have the 40th anniversary OR50 and they are super simple amps that just don't require much messing around with. they are my favorite Orange amp i have played because it appeals to my simple nature.
nice to see i am not alone
i must admit, i am picky about speakers, i tend to run my OR50H with a set of weber silver bell and blue dog speakers. they sounds very old school british and i think they compliment the amp very well.
I played a lot of Amps (VOX ac30, ac4, Mesa Express, Marshall Jcms 800,900,2000,... Can't remember all xD) and I must admit that my Mesa Dual rectifier is picky with speakers. Of course speakers have sooo much influence. More than most guys imagine.
... And I love AlNiCo Blues too :)
Great interviewer.
24:07 Tommy Emmanuel plays Maton. In Australia they're seen equivalent to Taylor or Martin. I had no idea they made electrics
They do and they're better than Gibson. I have a Maton MS2000 and it's like an Aussie Les Paul but better. The quality is outstanding.
I don't know about axis fuzzes,Ive made a couple but it's not something I'd chose to use for everything,(I know even jimi didn't) the mosirite fuzz would colour it enough in a stereo mix,but I think there's other things you could use..although saying that I wonder if players with Jesse's approach towards recording would benefit from a two board stereo output configurationon axis fuzz with a a switchable boost instead. might breadboard and see how that pans out!
Nice guys , I really like when they are showing their gear and do not send the guitar tech or a roadie to do so.
Jesse seems like the coolest guy
Eodm just seems like such a nice bunch of guys lol
23:31
whoa! i didn't know Commissioner Gordon played guitar XD
I wish there was a rig rundown for drums
wow, to think that just a month after this interview was aired they about 90 people were killed in Paris during a concert with this band.
Nobody commented on how we were very lucky to still have all this band alive!? Paris, bataclan, anyone? I enjoy every bit of this band more now.
i own an axis fuzz, made in england about 10 years ago. i had 300€ to spare, managed to nab one and an octavia for just under the 300€ mark, 297€, i think. not that expensive, but the backlog is incredibly long, last time i checked. you want expensive from roger mayer? check out his wah. the rolls-royce of wahs, but at 500£, it had better be.
I just want to give a heartfelt shout-out to the people of France and Eagles of Death Metal. Nobody deserves this and the people of France (and the spirit of Rock N' Roll) will continue on in brave disposition against these cowards.
BEST BAND NAME EVER!
Seriously, I don't give a shit about his politics. Jesse is awesome and I wanna hang out with him.
rtmis1 me too man, me too
"THE SYMBOL FOR GAIN IS A FUCKING FIST!" Never really though about that.
these guys got fucked with the attack in Paris and my heart goes out to 'em
Damn so this is like a month or two before the Paris attack
10:14 This is why I love Dave Catching ! "It's rock and roll !" . I saw JD Simo play a small club with a 1960 Gibson Les Paul and a vintage Marshall . He could had done the show with a R0 and a reissue Marshall and you wouldn't know the difference . In a studio , yeah but in a nite club with everything cranked , not at all .
Jesse is a cool dude.
