    There are a couple of basic tests and procedures that a lot of people skip over when trying to troubleshoot a Mercury Optimax. Here is a short video that goes over the basics which should get you pointed in the right direction.
    Starting with splitting the chaps to make life so much easier, then doing a spark and compression test. Optimax's are known for failing coils. So a spark test will show you if this is one of the problems.
    *** IMPORTANT!!!!!*****
    CERTAIN OLDER OPTIMAX'S HAVE COILS THAT CAN SHORT OUT EXPENSIVE ELECTRONIC PARTS! MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT OPTIMAX YOU ARE WORKING ON BEFORE SWAPPING AROUND PARTS WITH ANOTHER ENGINE!
    Checking the air and fuel pressure on an Optimax next is super important to properly diagnose the issue. If the air pressure is not where it should be the fuel pressure will not build either.
    Sometimes people can chase fuel pressure without even fixing the air pressure and waste many hours fixing something that wasn't broken.
    Most Opti's require 90 PSI fuel and 80 PSI air. If these pressures are off, then start with the air pressure and check the compressor by clamping off the air dump hose on the PORT fuel rail. The pressure should spike, then check the fuel as well.
    These tests can get you up and running way faster than anything else. Usually, a spark plug, ignition coil, or some dirty fuel filters are what the problem is with an Optimax!

    Thank you so much for doing this video. I am auto mechanic trying to help a friend out with his Optimax 200 and its helped me in a very short time to see and understand how the fuel system works. I am looking at what looks like two injectors and compressed air to the fuel rails. So as a auto mechanic I needed to find out the scoop. You covered exactly what I needed to make the correct diagnosis.

    Responding to comment by Edward: BAB, I find that when videoing, it helps to "pan" to the detail, then purposely hesitate on the detail item you are showing. I think the pace of your videos is good, quick and succinct, I just replay segments if need. Also there's a speed feature (in settings) in the bottom right of vid toolbar where one can slow down or speed up the video, very handy. When looking for a reference vid, I usually hit the "under 9 minute" vid first, then look for longer ones if needed, seldom would I click on a 22 minute vid to start with. Cheers, and thank you for these vids!

Im actually having the same low pressure result that Luis Monzon stated here below (70-80 on a 200 Hp, Year 2002, 350 hours ). 2:18 Thank you for explaining the second injector... I'm considering going from my 1994 Merc 2.5 (carb) boat to a 2012(?) Optimax boat. I'm a DIY (I maintain everything I have)... this Opti looks a bit scary to me. I have heard about compressor failure destroying an engine, but I also heard coils are $400 a piece, just searched and found aftermarket ones for $60.

    • @colbybud
      @colbybud Před 2 lety

      never ever put an aftermarket injector on an outboard. The pintle can come loose and take out the cylinder. they are essential for engine health that each injector fires the same amount of fuel. This is why you have them cleaned every 300 hours. Pull all 12 injectors and send them off for cleaning. You can buy used injectors for about $250 each there is a company that sells them.

    Hello, I have a 2008 150 optimax, i bought it with compersor that blew apart, i bought the new compresor but i suppose the old one didnt blow apart for no reason, to be exact im suspecting my oil pump on the engine is not working properly, i tried it outside and it is working, it is pumping out oul every time i connect it and dissconect it to the battery, also when i turn on the priming process with the accelerator, it starts pumping nicely, but when the engine is running when i dissconect the output hoses there is no oil coming out, my outboard oil reservior is holding the pressure, it has a few litters of oil in it and the hoses seem good, i heard the on-engine oil tank caps can go bad but im not sure that is the reason that oil pump is not working right as it pumps oil when engine is not running(during the priming process). So my question is how much oil the pump should provide when engine is running and is it maybe possible my engine computer is for whatever reason not sending the right signals to the oil pump while engine is working ? It would be really helpfull if you know something on that topic, thanks in advance.

    Pretty cool explanation! I have one question. Optimax 225, on the max throttle boat shoots like an arrow, but runs for maybe 30-40 seconds and then starts to cut.... And if I lower the throttle, then can continue to go, maybe 4000 RPM, then nail again throttle and agains runs on wide open for maybe 5-10 seconds and again start to cut. To my eye seems like that simply don't have enough fuel to run on the max throttle. Sparkplug are brand new and engine is actually really explosive but for like 1 minute and then start to cut, going intermittent, I lower down a bit throttle and continue to go on less power well, smoothly and without interruption. Low pressure fuel pump maybe? Thank you!

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  Před 4 dny

      Could be a ton of different things, but most likely fuel related, where you are running out of fuel volume, could be in the tank, the lines from the fuel tank, the water sep, the low pressure pump, the filter on the high pressure pump. You'll need to do some testing for sure, here are some videos:
      czcams.com/video/09ob37BC02Y/video.html
      czcams.com/video/g7eIUx5bP_k/video.html
      czcams.com/video/IcvkP8pRsRY/video.html&t
      Also, could be the high pressure pump could be dirty or something like that, dirty filter on the pump, etc.:

      That will be a similar video, hopefully that helps and you get it figured out! If not, we could help out a little more in the Boater's Program where you can message and upload pictures and videos, you can check that out here:

My buddy suggested I look into the Throttle Position Sensor, and somehow this was the first video that popped up, and Ironically, I was like, that is my boat. lol. Thanks!

    Paul from Australia here, just wondering if you meant that the fuel pressure increases when u block the fuel return hose not the air increase?
    I’m having low pressure air and fuel issues on my 2008 115hp optimax

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  Před 26 dny

      Hello Paul,
      Well they are directly related because of the tracker valve, they should stay 10 PSI apart, so when you pinch the dump, they spike :) been a while since I messed with an older Opti, can't remember fully.
      If you don't have air pressure you won't get fuel pressure. Best to just get your fuel pressure to normal, roughly 45ish PSI, letting you know the VST and all that assembly is good.
      Then look into the air, you have to get the air pressure right before going any further on the fuel side of things. No air pressure, no fuel pressure, or higher fuel pressure where it should be for the injectors to work properly together.
      Hopefully you can run the tests in the video though and figure out if you have a weak air compressor or a pressure regulator.
      If you can't get it figured out you could look into joining our Boater's Program where we have messaging and a place for you to upload pictures and videos and we can discusss whatever you want on a weekly livestream.

    Thanks a lot for this video. My new to me 2007 225 Opti went on its first trial today at low RPM. Never had an issue starting, but has never really been under load except for a few short bursts today below I'd say 3500rpms. It shut off 5 seconds after starting up to make the 100yd trip back to the dock. When I turned the key off and then back on, the fuel pump was very noisy and higher pitch when priming. Did this constantly and couldn't get it to run longer than several seconds. Is it most likely the high pressure pump? I haven't checked pressures but I will after seeing this video. The engine is beautiful and looks nearly new with 700hrs on it, but I'm hoping it isn't going to turn into a headache. Thanks again!

      Hello @scott bellamy I can't think of anything specific that could be causing that type of an issue. Something should have been a miss while doing all of those tests. It's possible that one of the ignition coils is beginning to fail and then at higher RPM's it is getting more juice so it runs fine.

    I have a Mercury 115 efi 4 stroke. I'm looking for a good video on checking coils. We have a high end mis. We have changed spark plugs twice. Both times the issue seemed to go away. Only to return a short time later. We suspect its one of the coils. We've bought new coils, but would like a good way to diagnose the problem. Specifically at the coil itself.

    Should my Optimax 150 pee immediately, or does it wait until the engine is warm? I have fished a several years, but have never taken a boat out myself. My dad died about a year and a half ago and I now possess his Nitro 7.
    It has not been on the water in almost two years, and the batteries need to be replace. The cranking battery has totally died and I have tried charging it and reconditioning it. I also decided to replace the trolling motor batteries with Li Time (lithium) batteries, and am going to install a lithium charger, too.
    But, I already knew that the tell tale wasn't peeing from cranking it up a few months ago. I had tried muffs, but it never peed. I bought a large (soft) rainwater collection "can" and filled it up. That way the propeller can turn with no need for the muffs. Using both methods. it still never peed.
    I only found out today that I could screw in my hose to the left of the tell-tale. That did cause water to stream from the tell tale.
    But my main question still remains: Should the tell tale pass water immediately, or should it rely on the engine warming up enough to open up the thermostat?

    Thank you for the video, and maybe you can help me with my Optimax. I have one Optimax 115 from 2005, with 3 cylinders. The problem I have is not the motor itself, but the leakage from the top of the oil tank on the motor, when I tilt the motor (when I want to keep the prop out from the water, or when I am transporting the boat). I have changed the gasket, but it is still leaking when the motor is tilted. The oil tank is full, and I do not know what to do. Any suggestion? Thanks again:)

    I have an '02 200hp Optimax. It would sit for months between uses and has been hard starting. I have replaced the plugs and had the injectors cleaned. Now, it is hard starting but it starts without opening the throttle and will idle. It still is not right; excessive cranking for an Optimax. I have a 800cca Interstate battery charged and it has proper voltage, I went and got 2 loaner fuel pressure testing gauges today and found that; one the air spikes when I clamp the air dump line, two I get very little air pressure increase when I clamp the fuel return line RPMs rise though(I think you got the wrong gauge described in your video the fuel jumps not the air), three the pressures were about 10psi difference(it was hard to read I could not get a liquid filled gauge).
    This is maybe the big thing after giving some throttle I will have more than 10psi fuel pressure and when I clamped the fuel return line the fuel pressure spiked the 100lb gauge and did not go back down. I think I may still have two issues still one starting and one with the fuel pressures?

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  Před 4 lety

      It sounds like the fuel and air pressures are operating properly and that it might be more of an issue with one of those injectors. Did you have all the injectors cleaned the air and the fuel injectors? It could be the issue if they aren't flowing properly.

    What would stop the fuel injectors from opening...besides clogging which I think I would have had some noticeable warning.

    • @colbybud
      @colbybud Před 2 lety

      Shorted out. With a multimeter connect one to pin on injector and the other lead to the metal case. If continuity then its shorted out. Most often they get low impedance. Clogging causes low impedance due to overheating from carbon buildup. This is why they say not to use fogging oil its waxy deposits can get into the injectors. Also quickleen is needed to prevent carbon deposits.
      You should also be using 150:1 premium plus 2 stroke oil in the gas to lubricate the injectors. This is because when you shutdown the motor they have no cooling and the oil protects them from damage.

    Have a 115 optimax that ran fine until we swapped out pedestal, originally thought a wiring issue, took to marine shop and learned fuel pump was bad
    We ordered one and replaced, it did start and run for approx 3min. Then stopped. Noticed then the fuel pump had reverse polarity from the original. Suggestions? Now it wont even turn over, but we did swap the wiring to match polarity now. Would this have done damage? What should we check next?

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  Před 5 lety

      That's odd. It happens though. I would stick to checking what has already been done. If everything was working properly before replacing the swivel bracket, then the engine wouldn't start and you found the fuel pump wasn't working. Something sounds fishy with the whole reverse polarity thing on the fuel pump. There are two fuel pumps inside the VST, so if you reversed the polarity on one, then the other one isn't going to be working properly. I'd say to open the VST back up and check over that whole situation. Then as long as they are working properly, move on to checking the fuel and air pressures to see what's going on. Hope this helps and you get it figured out!

The boat and hull and weight are going to be what will affect the prop pitch, so there are a lot of variables there :/
