Actually, pulling stunts like this is going to bring more and more restrictions to drone flying of all kinds. It's already started to happen. Yes, the skills are amazing and great to watch, but EVERYONE makes mistakes. And many less skilled people watching this will think they can probably do it too. A damaged drone dropping uncontrolled from a couple of hundred metres in the sky in to a public street, is really going to ruin someone's day if it hits them or smashes through a car windscreen. With freedom comes responsibility. Too many people want the former but not the latter.
I am usually the first one to complain about how this or that will effect the hobby in a negative way, however it really seems like the area was abandoned and they had people watching for traffic. It is a very fine line, and weither or not they accomplished it, they helped make an issue of it and start a discussion. I think that the future of the hobby lies with being able to keep the free spirit that this kind of video shows, while still being able to do it in a safe enough manner that you don't cause problems. Daily vlogs of sanitized flights in a grass field are not gonna cut it.

And now, 5 years later, we have lots of new restrictions and registration requirements on flying. Great flying etc, but the area clearly wasn't abandoned, there were about 50 cars parked right next to the building and there are roads to the front and one side. It's reckless behaviour. Perversely, many of those complaining about all the new restrictions are the ones whose actions brought them about in the first place. Freedoms come with responsibilities, and if we don't behave responsibly, we'll lose the freedoms.
Could you imagine being inside one of those buildings and seeing a drone fly by your window? That'd be sick

Very late reply here. There's a FPV (first person view) camera on the craft, that sends a wireless video feed down into video goggles worn by the pilots. The video on here is from a separate camera that records in good quality. Their video feed is grainy, low-resolution, and entirely analog relying on the old PAL/NTSC TV standard.

That 6" roar! I got so nervous watching some of those dives, so close to the building! Awesome shots. Also, although what they're doing isn't legal and a little risky: it's still a hell of a lot less dangerous than flying a phantom above NYC traffic in the middle of the day like Casey Neistat does in every one of his videos.

Finally watched this properly after reading all the fuss and backlash over the last few days. Talk about overreaction... That was just great flying, done sensibly, by people with the skill required. Hats off gentlemen!

a sure way to get more restrictions added or even a hobby stopped , looks cool but it's a no no for me , the camera recording gives a more clearer view , so obviously from the fpv cam your vision blasting up that dark path is limited even more , anyone could of been walking along it , and you know what speed plus weight plus spinning props can do , stick to trees and deserted property , other than that, peace out
Andy M this is why we have multiple spotters and the fpv cam actually sees better at night because it's IR sensitive. These things are done in a safe manner and are no more dangerous than a bike ride through a park.
yes spotters are a must , and i know there is always a lot of you out sometimes , but 3 of you were flying on 1 clip , and the video showed only 4 of you in the car , so you see why i mentioned that , it would be a good thing to mention spotters on videos to people who assume otherwise , i know your flying talents are incredible , but shit always happens
our crew's FPV camera settings actually allow you to see better at night than the naked eye. And in each situation, we always run our pre-game check to ensure safety and have spotters in strategic locations based on our planned flight path.
I encourage everyone to think for themselves and to always fly within your skill/gear limits. Take responsibility for your own decisions and stop blaming others.
Matt Brooks, if they are willing to take the blame if they hit something, you should not worry.
The only thing that you can say about them is that they went over the 400ft "suggested height" made by the FAA. The thing is, the FAA does not enforce these rules and nobody follows them. When laws or rules are not enforced you don't have to follow them. Think about what would happen if there were no police around to stop crazy drivers? Think about what you say, man. I'm 12 and probably have more of a logic than you!
Now, I know that you will be enraged by this comment and would like you to know that I am not here to start a comment war. I am simply here to exchange my ideas and thoughts. I thought about your logic for a long time and think that you present a good point! If you stand by your belief still, I have nothing against it.

It's a 2 billion dollar market right now. That's a lot of jobs lost. It's not so easy just to say "Oh we're going to ban them now". People said the same thing about night flying with RC planes.
Diving buildings isn't in itself an issue; doing so on buildings that are in use, without clearing the area, getting permission etc is.

if they have permission or if it is a abandoned building than it's fine but when I see cars driving on the street below it just can't be safe it's only a matter of time before there is a accident. In this video if you look at Tommy he knows he shouldn't be doing this, you can tell he is worried about getting busted

but you guys still break a couple of real FAA regulations, you know which ones I am talking about. And eventually someone who understands about aviation will inform the things you are doing. Just telling.
We flew only in areas that were safe and as we never left building level or 500ft it was completely legal. We have spotters and you can't fly very far from your location. I think the people worried about breaking FAA regs are more concerned about fullsized drones. Mini quads could cause damage, but they aren't much worse than a los airplane when it comes to risking FAA airspace.

I'd like to see a whole series of videos filmed inside National Parks. Dive Mt Rushmore and the Grand Canyon. Rip Balls in the Smokey Mountains. Power Loop the Golden Gate Bridge (Stinger, you know you want to).
If the whole hobby gets shut down, it won't be these guys who caused it. It will be some noob flying a Phantom he bought at Best Buy 3 hours before flying it over the I5 or the Super bowl.
Not used to seeing so many "thumbs down".... I can really appreciate this video for the art and talent. However, it does leave me with questions and concerns.

If you're representing your own commercial brand or sponsors and/or yourself individually as a professional or not - who accepts liability if there's an accident? Given all your talents and skills, please consider this scenario, however unlikely... If you smashed a spotlight or clipped a security camera or damaged a parked car, would you inform the owner, or pack up and leave like it never happened? We should all be responsible adults and professionals. Do not be disrespectful to property or to the hobby. We should be prepared to make-right for our mistakes.
Do you have liability insurance that would cover your accident? Would they still cover you if you didn't have permission from the property owner? Or permission from the city? Would the property owner let you fly if you asked them to sign a release of liability? Probably, no, DEFINITELY not.

Mr Steele I only say this because it's true. Yall can do this safely and without endangering people, but the copycats wont. The RC hobby as a whole has been under close scrutiny. When some gung-ho senator or governor sees something like this, they don't see expert pilots showing their skill. They see public endangerment. There is a reason yall call it guerilla fpv. if we do it or not Idiots will do this stuff and are currently copycatting all over the world in dangerous manners. the only way to Help at all is to show people that it can be done. in a safety. doesn't matter what we do someone else will do it. but i'll tell you right now. building with minikwads was a dream i've had since my early days of drooling over Trappy's videos I love the rebellious side in him and TBS which is why i have been with them for over a year and half now through thick and thin I love pushing people buttons and creating controversy. it pushes us as a culture into new light good or bad being stagnant willl kill us this won't!

OK so first of all this is an awesome video. Love the look and the flying skill it takes. However I was thinking about how this video might impact the hobby. If you guys have done this legally with proper permits then i have no issues. If not I'm wondering how you are taking all the negatives and also wondering if this does more good than bad. You have some of the best pilots the US has to offer here. This channel is also produced by Chad Kapper who produces Flitetest a channel that does things completely different and I am pretty sure the guys over there wouldn't advise on doing this at all. Am I wrong in saying this?
I would love to hear your guys opinion if this is more good than bad for the Hobby. Also are you guys ok if this video would cause direct backlash for the hobby?

I'm normally stoked to see new Rotor Riot content on my subscription feed, but some of the behaviour in this video is a downright disgrace - especially coming from a group of high-profile sponsored pilots who are supposed to serve as ambassadors for our hobby.
Don't kid yourselves; you aren't some elite group of 'guerilla fpv' hotshots in this video. You're simply a bunch hooligans acting illegally & irresponsibly, giving a bad name to our beloved hobby & endangering its future for all of us who actually give a passing thought about the law & about the safety of others.

At what point were they flying unsafely? There were no passers-by or cars below them and they maintained control of their crafts the entire time. They are always respectful to others and authorities should they express concerns. Every one of them knows the limits of their machines better than most commercial pilots know theirs. I think they represent the hobby admirably.
i disagree, I believe we were operating in a safe manner with all risks mitigated. And we will continue to make compelling content that pushes the hobby instead of inhibit it out of fear mongering. Safety is our #1 priority.
