I love how for this they just started talking and y'all get to listen in on two amazing authors chat. You get enough of my face. This is so much better!
You’re a hip person danial Greene
You're a great listener, that's important and rare
You got two amazing authors to just gush about each other's work! This is amazing!
Its also a sign of a great interview if the interviewer only has to plop a few guiding questions and we got to see the magic happen. Truly an amazing video to watch and great insight for all of us on the creative process, different approaches and the art of crafting story, characters, and worlds. Very happy for you Daniel getting these opportunities to bring the community of writers, readers, enthusiasts, youtubers, and general public together like this! Definetly glad to have clicked on one of your videos way back while on the pooper at work, been having great poop breaks ever since! 😆
Does Pips still do drugs?
R.f kuang is like that meme with the girl that smiles after she burnt the house behind her; she's super sweet but her books are pure emotional torture.
Wow, I gotta read these books
I love the absolute glee that Rebecca and Evan have over each other’s works. They both seem like wonderful people to talk to.
can confirm they are.
Rename this video to "Rebecca Kuang and Evan Winter obsess over each other's books"
and thus, Thaniel has assembled the infinity authors
The Infinity Authors:
Brandon Sanderson
Patrick Rothfuss
Rebecca Kuang
Joe Abercrombie
Evan Winter
Nicholas Eames
@@thomasalexanian927 NK Jemisin!
@@Mikeztarp yes her too
@@Mikeztarp all these authors should play DND together I would love to see that
@@thomasalexanian927 definitely
I'm already Rebecca's fan and haven't even read her books yet.
Yeah she is only 24 wow
@@briani8785 that's the depressing part, though. Success where you at?
@@JohnnyValmaggia haha yeah exactly. I’m interested in being a writer but I still don’t have the commitment to even do the research and my job that I don’t like still runs my life lol.
@@briani8785 I'm technically at work right now - Call Centre, a dream job. BUT, here's what helped me: first, listen to Writing Excuses. Second, follow a single rule: write every day. Even if it is one sentence, one word, or one thousand. Just write every day.
I read the poppy war. It's fantastic. I hated the main character but I felt like that almost by design, because her character is so compelling. I guess you would call her a grey character?
I really like the setting too :)
For years, ASOIAF told me "winter is coming", and I'm still waiting. Meanwhile, Daniel regularly has Winter on his channel. I guess we know where Winter's Heart truly lies, now don't we?
Winter's Heart. I see what you did there
Meta
Rebecca and Evan are what teachers hope for when they say "talk amongst yourselves"
This video should have been titled "Escaping Reality with Friends for an Hour".
this is a slightly different compliment but rebecca NEVER being interrupted, NOT ONCE, as well as having an equal amount of questions directed to her in an interview with two men is absolutely awesome to see! a lot of female authors being interviewed by men (and a lot of women in conversations with men in general) are constantly being talked over so the respect shown to her by both daniel and evan is really nice and should be the standard!
Also the mutual respect and mutual fanning over each other's book between Rebecca and Even is just so nice to see
I was just looking for a reason to procrastinate, bless you!
Daniel's going places. Rebecca Kuang AND Evan Winter? Wow. Soon, we'll see Daniel interviewing GRRM and Stephen King.
I am far less interested in this than what we've gotten
Martin and King would really be the coolest thing ever and maybe Pat as well.
@@culturestudios3500 Let's not stop there, how about Brando Sando coming in too? The interview will be epic. 2 highly prolific writers and 2 writers who haven't written in years. It'll be perfect.
Is GRRM still a writer?
@@bluerectangle5794 Lol and maybe Martin and Rothfuss could influence Sanderson to better his prose. Maybe even get him to use "Fuck" and "cunt" from time to time. 😂
You'll see, if Sanderson had to write like GRRM or Pat he'd also have a book out every 10 years. But again I really would like to see King, Rothfuss and Martin talk with Sanderson. Wouldn't that be a vibe??? Cause I swear to God I've never heard any major writer mention Brandon's name anywhere, which is why I only heard of him this year.
Rebecca Kuang is so cool that she's a bestseller and a Hugo Award winner and doesn't even consider fiction writing her primary career 😂
And fencing!!!
@Looking Glass she's going into academia!
tolkien did the exact same thing: his main profession was linguistics, and he translated Beowulf from the original, but nowadays he's known mostly for his books.
These interviews just keep getting better and a big part of it is how you just let them talk and express themselves fully without interrupting. Also just the sheer joy of getting to listen to such intelligent people and get a look inside their minds makes me look forward to these. Usually I only watch interviews once because all most of them offer is fleeting entertainment but these have such great in depth discussions that I want to keep coming back and listen to them again with a different perspective.
Rebecca seems so nice for someone who has emotionally wounded me so much.
😂
So, am I correct that both Rebecca and Evan hit it (relatively) big with their debut novels, without having published even a single short story beforehand? That's damn impressive.
Seems that way
I find it very encouraging and inspiring
Love that rather than an interview this feels more like an in depth chat between two authors who clearly really, really respect each other's work.
Also - Rebecca's new series that she's working on sounds awesome! Hiccup like protag in historical oxford is everything I need
Man, joker memes ruined me, when Rebecca Kuang said "We live in a society" I just laughed out loud
Same 😭 i bet she did it on purpose
Yeah I’ll never take that seriously anymore haha
I was immune to these memes until I read this and got curious...Thanks Pedro lol
She said in the previous interview she speaks in memes so...
Ye we really do live in a society where joker mem... DAMN IT !!
You could have Evan and Rebecca on for a talk every single week and I’d never get over them!
This is just two amazing authors having a chat, with our goblin host grinning with joy in the background, and I love it!
The discussion around reviewers who "don't identify with the protagonist" was really fascinating. Fiction is essentially an empathy exercise and I was wondering where the responsibility of the author to create that empathetic link ends and where the responsibility of the reader begins. And are there some experiences that are just beyond certain people with certain worldviews?
U think so you learn by reading.
Brando Sando and Lord Grimdark! I have faith in you Supreme Goblin
Wow Daniel just took a back seat, and let these two creatives pick eachothers brains, and I kinda love it....No offense Daniel, appreciate you facilitating these minds coming together. Your input is always appreciated, but dang what a treat.
Rebecca Kuang is way, way younger than I would've assumed.
She got her first bestselling fantasy book published before she was even out of college
@@isaacbruner65 Plus, she has a bachelor, 2 Masters and is now enrolled in a PhD program.
this is going in the playlist where the Abercrombie and the Sanderson interview went, TO THE "LEARN HOW TO WRITE IN A PROPER WAY".
btw... that perfect tag team responses between these two great people made you, Daniel, look a bit more like a guest. I guess that's why I love these author interviews more than any other format. You let them speak as much as they want.
GOOD JOB, my fellow Scholar!
U really should make a podcast, daniel.
He has one, afictionalconversation
@@reidblanchard6453 he has? Well i don't know that. Thanks btw
It would've been better if content like this goes into podcast tho....
He does the podcast with a friend of his. It's called A Fictional Conversation.
Jeez, for Kuang novel writing isn’t even her main passion yet she still wrote a bestselling trilogy. What am I doing with my life lo l
Ikr that hit hard lol
It's a weird, demoralizing feeling knowing that a bestselling author is younger than you. In the case of Kuang, young by exactly one year.
@@joshuakusuma5953 And yet, that means that your bestselling novel/film/show/animation/channel/art piece/photography work/clothing line is just going to come later in life
You'll still do it.
Just don't give up; it might not be as big or successful as Rebecca's, but making something, anything, is better than giving up and letting that demoralising feeling eat away at you.
I can't wait to see what you do to be honest.
@@michaelandrews117 Thanks, man. That made my day.
I can totally see where you're coming from. Though, if you change you're thinking just a little bit, it can be a little inspiring. Hearing about Rebecca's and Evan's process and their life helps you realize that writing a novel is really, really difficult. . . But also totally possible. Even by a college student with tons of studies. In short, you got this!
Omg Rebecca kuang and Evan Winter are so adorable when talking about their characters, books, process....I almost forgot Daniel was the one interviewing them because of how much it was just Rebecca and Evan vibing with each other.
OMG Rebecca talking about having your "younger self" as a co-author is so spot on! Makes the difficulty in getting published a blessing in disguise. The first book in my series needs... work.
Yuuup
I just bought both of their debut novels this year! This is a amazing collab!
Edit: Love their talk about Trauma. Evan was speaking truth on how I feel as a black man. Also liked what she said about Negative reviewers saying that they "cant" relate to the character. Its the same way I feel about people who say Rand is a OP mary sue character.
Hate that argument too, it's not like Rand is basically TORTURED for 12 out of 14 books before he gains enough strength to be able to fight an all-powerful being.
@@Piqipeg Mental Breakdowns, Constant Bickering, Accidentally murdering your troops, having to convince the political world that you are not a threat but should be taken seriously, watching your mentor, friends, and soldiers die in front of you, and oh everyone's favorite book club!...The "Aes Sedai".
Those are just minor inconveniences I guess
I agree that rand is an exelent character. I just couldnt start to like him.
In fact its the same for the wheel of time as whole for me. I could love every component of it. The world, cultures and organisations in it ? Very good. Characters ? Very good. Plot ? Quite good. Power system ? Good. And yet, i dont remember the wheel of time as dear to me. The characters i dont love, i appreciate. Its a bit weird given that i loved stormlight archive, or lightbringer. In the end its a bit weird for me to say that because i dont mind lots of talking and a slower pace, but a lot of WoT felt... boring, and slow. Too extensive descriptions. Many meh dialogues tho they could be great. Lots of repetition. Almost a villain of the week format for the final boss of each book.
But the worst of the worst is that i did not get attached to the characters.
There was only one book where i felt i was reading something that would have emotional value for me. Book 4. I loved this one. I enjoyed others, but not quite like it. To this day, despite the defaults i listed, i still do not understand how the wheel of time could mean so little to me given that it has everything i like in it.
What experiences have you had with the police that were unreasonable?
@@TomFranklinX Nothing too bad. But I felt what he said about even when I act calm there's always this danger that looms over you. That jist because your calm doesnt mean the world(or in this case police) will react that way towards you
Also just watching the two of them fangirling about each other - a big yes from me and I haven't even started reading their novels!
Mr. Greene, I want to commend you for being able to moderate a conversation like this and knowing when to get out of the way and let the subjects naturally build on what they want to say instead of driving the interview where you think it should go. 👊🏼
Oh no, now I have to add more books to my TBR
I am too afraid to watch these because both “The Rage of Dragons” and “The Poppy War” Trilogy are on my tbr and I REALLY don’t want to see any spoilers, but I cant wait to watch this once I actually read those!
I just watched...no major spoilers. They mostly talked themes, character development, inspiration and their process. At most you'll hear in a vague sense about a battle or two but nothing that spoils the events.
Zero plot spoilers.
@@tonypoole1430 Thank you! I've been spoiled for several books by some of Daniel's other interviews so I was trying to play it safe.
@@charlie.tt4 I hear you! I've held off on some videos for that reason too.
I got a Question. What are some really good examples of a High Fantasy book series that has these qualities?:
-A fantasy world that is its own mythology
-Epic fight scenes and wars
-Intense magic battles
-A hugely expanded magic system
-The archetypical hero’s journey
-Dragons, Unicorns, Griffins, Sea Monsters, Phoenixes, and other known mythical beasts
-Stunningly beautiful and smart female characters and love interests
-Romantic story arcs that involve love and sex
-Conflicts involving politics
-Themes and elements and faith and religion
-Spiritual and psychological themes
-Elves, Dwarves, Goblins, Ghouls, Vampires, Merfolk, Fairies, Centaurs, and other non-human races
-Different languages that are spoken by non-human languages
-A feared and all-powerful dark lord who is after the main hero
-the archetypal wise wizard
-a community of wizards and sorceresses
-Dark themes of tragedy, corruption, betrayal, and genocide
-A tone that turns into being dark and gritty while always being mature from the start
-Characters that are realistic and relatable in personality
-Light and positive themes of faith, love, friendship, loyalty, honor, sacrifice and optimism
me staring at daniel’s shirt for the whole video wondering if i can find it where i live
Its teddy fresh
"Your co-author is your younger self." Such a good and interesting point.
Wow, Rebecca Kuang's writing process is fascinating! Wow.
I was so stressed when I woke up, and then I saw this! Rebecca AND Evan in one interview? We love to see it :)
Ok guys now he starts to flex real hard on us with thoose double interviews. Keep it up!
This is the best conversation you've hosted thus far. They were great together. You're not always so lucky to have guests who enjoy a conversation. This was outstanding!
my two new fav fantasy authors together in an interview with Daniel? is my birthday today? loved it!
This was so wonderful! Thank you Daniel!
Good timing Daniel, I really needed this lol
Lol! They are interviewing themselves and Daniel is there like, go on.. we're listening.. like a host lol
This was so amazing!!!! Thank you for making this happen, Daniel, and thanks to the authors for participating so openly and interactively!
This was so enjoyable to watch. Great job facilitating an incredible conversation!
This is amazing content Daniel, I love how you let them flow in this interview!!!! I love it!!!
I could listen to them forever. Thank you so much for hosting this amazing interview!
This is probably my favorite interview yet! Keep up the good work.
Highlight of the day. One of my favourite interviews you have done - what a dynamic trio!
Great insights from both of the authors. Cool to see two in one go, really opened up the discussion more with two established points of view. Also thanks for elaborating on my Q at the end. Nice improv :D
Hope you have an easy week and take care in these unusual days! Awesome content here.
Very impressed by the quality of the interview. Everybody was so comfortable, great questions, thanks you !
This is an awesome job of offering a question and getting out of the way for these two to talk. I love that you gave them the space to carry the interview on their own. These two are so awesome, what a great pair!
This was a phenomenal interview! You did a great job moderating and giving them both the space to talk! Really excited to read their books!
Wow. This was a brilliant conversation to listen too!
Ngl I screamed when I saw this notification, perfect thing to listen to during my morning tea! And a much needed break from the news 😅
this is an incredible conversation i am now obsessed with both of these authors
Evan Winter looks dope here.
Oh, yeah. Evan is fiiiine.
@@wabisabi7755 It makes me wonder who his favorite artist is. I mean, writing a book is stressful, you need to rest and do something different once in a while, like working out while listening to Hip-Hop.
Wonderful Chat, man! I've been following you for years and your interviewing skills and intuition has Leveled Up considerably! INSPIRING!!!
This was amazing! I feel so in awe of these two writers and feel like I learned so much by listening. And such a needed break from the reality of today (we can feel the stress all the way to sweden)... thanks for all your work Daniel! 👍❤
Loved this video thank you all so much
And after listening to these two talk The Rage of Dragons and The Poppy War have shot up my tbr 😅
This is super cool, love hearing authors discuss differing perspectives and processes. Good day to all
This was so special!
With such a detailed interview it's so nice having the play bar split up! A bit of extra work to timestamp that's super appreciated!
This was such a lovely conversation between 3 fantastic people!! I love this :)
That was like listening to 2 friends chat about their work, very fun to watch. And good job Daniel letting them do that. I'm sure you had a bunch of questions lined up to ask, but you refrained and just allowed them to continue their dynamic interaction
We REQUIRE another video like this, listening to these 2 actors just discuss and gush over each others books is the best
Wow, what a great interview! The mutual respect from these authors and the genuine curiousity about each other's process made this really insightful. And Daniel was such a gracious host.
This is amazing. Thank you!! I can't watch it just now because I am suppose to do something call work, but will be my first thing later today when I am free 😍
I love how Daniel just stays out of the way as much as possible and facilitates this conversation, so enjoyable and well done
Oh wow, I absolutely love how the authors are speaking with each other and giving their observations and almost fangirling. Love it.
This was so great!! If I didn’t already plan on reading their books, this interview and their personalities alone would’ve convinced me! Thanks Daniel!!
I needed this right now! Love listening to these two so much.
❤👍😆🔥🔥
There’s nothing better than watching authors I love just sit and talk about writing. This is great!
Wooow, that was amazing to watch. It was like getting your popcorn and watching the two the best guys at the Wimbledon final go back and forth :-) I want them to be your regular guests now!!!
Really liked the 2 author format. Felt more like a conversation than a traditional interview. Both Rebecca and Evan seem genuinely nice and passionate about their work.
I love how Rebecca and Evan just took over and had a conversation with each other. It was like a con panel where Daniel was the moderator occasionally steering the conversation. Would love to see this kind of thing again for authors you already have detailed individual interviews for.
The last 5 minutes of this was so fucking wholesome. I love your content Daniel, you're giving us all such a gift. You and your guests are stirring that novel inside me that I've always wanted to get out.
TWo of my favorite authors. Great chat. As an author, myself, this is gold.
1st comment ever on YT, but this was amazing! Thank you, Daniel, for this interview. Rebecca and Evan are inspiring. Def got the creativity flowing listening to their creative processes and worldviews. More interviews please!
I've never heard of or read either of these authors before but they were absolutely fascinating! What an interesting discussion with so much insight. Definitely putting both on the to-read list!
These two authors are so great to listen to! Great video! I love them both and both of their books are great. My author's journey has just begun at the beginning of this year with the release of my first novel The Vanguards of Scion. I can only hope that my journey will be similar to either of theirs in terms of success.
Man I really loved that interview. Just hearing those two basically interviewing each other was amazing and really pushed both their series wayyyy up my tbr! Only one thing I’d like to see for future dual interviews: I would’ve loved to see both of their cameras at the same time when they’re conversing, similar to what you did at 58:11. Seeing their reactions to what the other has to say would add a lot imo. Otherwise great as always. Keep it up, Daniel!
I love how each person in this interview is inquisitive and open and they're all just learning from eachother. This is like my dream seminar 😂 Daniel thank you for these, I really learn a lot
As an aspiring writer I can't tell you how much I love these interactions. Its not only useful but super insightful. Keep it up man your doing good work.
The teddy fresh merch! Love to see that one of my favorite youtubers loves another one of my favorite youtubers!
Man this has to be hands down my favorite interview you've done...and I haven't even read either of these books yet! This format of having two authors with a bit of an overlapping experience (in this case, both trying to break into writing from different cultural backgrounds in this historically white western genre) is really really good. Do this more.
Both Evan and Rebecca are enchanting and inspiring, loved the sort of roundtable format here.
you've created a perpetual interview machine. well done.
I just want to say that i appreciate these kind of videos so much, as someone who used AOL dial up as a teenager. This is such a wonderful addition to the usual discussions we had in literature classes back in high school, and such a treasure for the future. It’s an amazing chance to archive the author’s thoughts on future classics. Just imagine if we could have had these same kind of videos by Twain, Shakespeare, etc, what a gift to society this is.
I'm about to finish Jade War, which I started reading after your review. I was wondering what to read next. Now I have two new authors I want to read. Thanks as always for your content!
These two have some beautiful chemistry when talking about writting
Omg you can see how excited Daniel looks at the star- he's practically glowing!
Your chats and interviews with authors are always great but this one in particular I thought was fantastic. Letting such good authors just bounce ideas and questions off each other and almost interview themselves was such a good outcome (whether intentional or not), and I'm sure it was as enjoyable to be there and be a part of as it was to listen to as a viewer. No idea how feasible it is but if you could manage to do other multiple author interviews of this format I really cannot stress enough how much I enjoyed this format. I realize that could be really hard to line up though. Either way, fantastic video.
I love these two so much.
When are we hosting Brandon and Joe together?
Man the fact that Daniel is able to interview so many top authors (and many of his favorite authors) is so amazing and awe-inspiring. His questions and interview style is also one of my favorites because they really go into content and process of writing (as opposed to some that are more celebrity-like, "what do you do in your free time etc" which are fine but we need that content focus), and he's not out here doing these interviews to make HIMSELF known but to really let the authors talk and talk to each other. Keep being awesome Daniel, thanks for doing what you do.
You did it again Daniel. Great Interview. Thanks for using my questions about "what was their favorite childhood book". Question: What is your favorite childhood book?
