  • The lock-on upgrade is a new feature that makes the player capable of seeing a Pokemon's gender, size, & marked status using the ZL Button. It had the potential to also be a fix the lack of shiny indicators in these games. Yet the devs decided not to include that perk... It's disappointing.

That’s exactly what I thought. It could have been so much better…

For most Pokemon, yes you can just tell. However, there do exist a bunch of them that are really subtle. Or just extremely small like Tandemaus or Flabebe where an icon would make it way nicer to hunt them.

As someone who is of poor eyesight (with glasses) with 70% of the national living shiny dex complete, this is not true. In Scarlet and Violet where this issue is new - no sound or effect indicator of a shiny spawned in the overworld - it's a massive problem where even typically easy to spot shiny pokemon can 'change colour' by the colour saturation of the environments and the shaders/lighting system the game uses. This game has a way of making even obvious shinies hard to spot because of the visual design of the game, and hurts both visually impaired (like colourblindness or legal blindness, which isn't a total darkness) and perfectly well sighted people. It's not just sighted folk that it hurts, either; the visual sparkle we would get in every other game assists the hearing-impaired, too! Now we have neither.
Take for example the recent Skrelp outbreak: they have distinct colours, however it's a *water spawn*, and not only do the water animations alter the perception of colour and shape, but the hue of the water can COMPLETELY obfuscate the colours of a pokemon and make it virtually indistinguishable between a shiny or normal Skrelp! Now take this knowledge and pair it with tiny pokemon like Igglybuff that have BARELY a change in colour. These tiny pokemon can be dwarfed greatly by even tufts of grass, making them harder to spot, which can cause eyestrain, headaches, and other medical complications to even perfectly well-sighted people. I was a medical assistant for an eye surgeon, and used to help treat people with these issues from just looking at their phones or computers too long. Something like this only compounds problems.
The visual sparkles and sound indicators are simple and effective accessibility tools that have existed since Gold/Silver/Crystal. I can understand why they didn't add it this gen; they likely wanted to add to the immersion, but this has a devastating effect on people's health and wellbeing. I encourage people to take breaks, not to strain themselves too much, to quit hunts that are too stressful on their bodies, but this is a problem Game Freak has absolute control over and could fix.
