What a supremely confident performance by Brian. No hesitation, just nailing the lead vocal. Really, this is a WOW performance. I'd go as far to say this is the best live performance of any song by Brian post-90's
Brian I don't think you'll ever read this ... but in the off chance you or your team does, thank you. This is among my favorite songs of all time, and I will be performing at the aquarium of the pacific in Long Beach, right down the road from Hawthorne. I visited your memorial the other day too, in the pouring rain, im sorry they destroyed the house it breaks my house too but even still, I felt a buzz of music that had been nourished there. Big fan. Thank you.
This man has an unfathomable well of creativity. When he was born, the angels came and gave us all a gift. I wonder if he really knows how deeply his music touches us mere mortals.
@@Andrew-kq4xm… Compare the self-imposed exile and isolation, his mental health struggles and addictions, the eventual glorious redemption of Brian Wilson, his everlasting legacy and incredibly deep musical catalog to the downfall of Phil Spector, who died in January 2021 of coronavirus in a hospital ward, but in prison custody. There’s really no comparison… Wilson surpasses his own “heroes” by miles and miles.
I think this is a great performance and is one of the many highlights in Brian Wilson and his band's career. We have to be honest and understand that without Brian's super talented band this performance and the entire Smile project would have never been possible.
My Dad loved this song..He said he sounded like he used to on this one. He especially loved the ending about the Children's Song. I love & miss my Dad soo soo very much.
I believe that line is attributed to Van Dyke Parks. They moved a lot of copies of the album but MANY ended up in the cut out bin, which is where I bought mine back then. I knew nothing of the history of the song. It just blew me away.
I was lucky enough to catch one of the stops on this tour, i was astounded by how many people Brian had on stage with him and man was a fantastic evening!!!
For the record, this is the 1966 masterpiece that Mike Love didn't understand and thought shouldn't be on a Beach Boys album. He didn't get the abstract poetry of Brian''s talented collaborator, lyricist Van Dyke Parks (What is this "columnated ruins"?).
I was lucky enough to attend the Smile concert and hear this masterpiece with my 20 something daughter. She was blown away as was I. It still gives me goose bumps ! Add in the Imagination concert, Pet Sounds , Lucky Old Sun, the 50 th anniversary tour concert and a 2013 concert with Al and David ...... And I am a very fortunate guy!!!
It's so nice to see Brian so animated while performing You can see the passion he has for his music.I saw Brian Al Jeff an David in July. Thank God I was spared having to watch and listen to Mike. The vocals and playing were awesome.Brian didn't interact at all with the audience. It was sad to watch this great man who brought us so much thur his music sit there struggling with his demons. However when he played and sang Summers gone at the end you could tell he truly misses Carl an Dennis

Indee he did it pretty well. But skipped those really high notes.
Brian looks and sounds great here.
Yea that's bcuz this show is from 16 yrs ago.
@@DummyYEEEAAHHHHHWOAH really?
Very sad to think that in a just a few years we will lose this wonderfully talented man who defied all the odds and survived .
His mother lived along time but that’s life. He lived a good one. His heart is made of spring.
I’m not an overtly nor overly religious man, but I truly believe God blessed US when he created Brian Wilson…
@@twoblacklabs904 Amen!
No wonder Leonard Bernstein dubbed Brian a genius back in the 60s when he heard this song.

So well said- exactly what I feel about Brian.
And yet Phil Spector said of Wilson, "I never thought he was that talented". UNBELIEVABLE! Clearly, musical jealousy.
That’s a brilliant performance Brian. Just pure genius, i love your music. Miss Carl though!❤️

We what? Jesus. Did you come down in the last shower? FFS
This song was channeled to Wilson and Parks from another dimension and time. It is not of this earth. There is no other song like it, imho
Beyond belief a broken man too tough to cry.... One of his best lines
I have thought of that lyric often since I first heard it.
Great line but technically not his, van dyke parks wrote the lyrics.
Yeah I know… great line though
For me, Surf's Up>A Day in the Life... 💯
Surf's Up is also found on "Surfs Up", the album. A brilliant composition.
I saw him perhaps four times over the years and hate to think of him gone. The world will be all that much darker.
i cannot believe how amazing brian sounds and what he is 70?? it is incredible, and he is really my hero, for being such a survivor. thank you! :)
He was 62 when this was recorded. Born June 20, 1942, this was recorded in 2004.
My Dad loved this song..He said he sounded like he used to on this one. He especially loved the ending about the Children's Song. I love & miss my Dad soo soo very much.
This may be my favorite song of all time
Update:
This is my favorite song of all time.
Thank you Brian. Thank you.
Any version of this song takes my breath away.
Back in the 70s, the band's record company (Warner Brothers) told Carl "If you title the album "Surf's Up", it'll pre-sell 500,000 copies. It did.
I believe that line is attributed to Van Dyke Parks. They moved a lot of copies of the album but MANY ended up in the cut out bin, which is where I bought mine back then. I knew nothing of the history of the song. It just blew me away.
I'm so glad that I've lived in a time to be able to witness a pure musical genius. Absolutely amazing songwriting.
How could you not be blown away hearing this a true artist's rendition of a masterpiece
A rock symphony
This song is an all-time Masterpiece, & this delivery was as good as any I've ever heard. -------------WolfSky9
agree
Best Brian Wilson song!
I've just listened to Leonardo Cohan and Judy Collins singing Suzanne thinking it can't get any better and then YT sends me to Surfs Up.
Brilliant! No other word to describe
it.
This song is pure magic!
I have been fortunate to see him perform this live 3 times. Every time I hear it or see a video of Surf's Up, I get chills. It's magnificent!
World class performance

The Laughs Come Hard in Auld Lang Syne.
there will be NO other like him.....
dios santo, es sin dudarlo lo mas hermoso que mis oídos han presenciado en lo que llevo de vida. no creo que nada lo supere
Brian, your work will forever continue to inspire
One of life’s sacred song
Love Brian’s little hand motions
Sounds great though
This performance I know, made Brian very happy!
He was on point 👌

What a beautiful piece of music!
Brian in his element
Someone told Brian he had to be a showman before this show. He doesn't. He just has to appear and the crowd will love him.
ブライアン・ウィルソンさんの感性がすべてつまった最高傑作。
Great, but needs Al for the end....
Believe me. This does not need Al. Brian wrote this song by himself. The wonderments compliment Brian Tremendously. He does not need Al.

this goes by too fast. I want to live in it longer
Brian's 2004 version of this classic song is better than the Beach Boys' original.

Yes you are
Lucky enough to catch most of them too, count myself very fortunate to have the memories that are so treasured.

It was incredible to be able to witness this live too. What an absolute privilege. 🏄 🆙
They nailed it here. Brian seems to be in good voice and very into it.
