0:59 The main idea of T.S. Eliot's poem "The Hollow Men" is that modern society is spiritually and morally bankrupt, leaving people feeling empty, purposeless and disconnected. Eliot portrays a bleak, desolate world populated by "hollow men" - people who are spiritually and emotionally vacant, "stuffed" with meaningless ideals and unable to express themselves meaningfully. The poem reflects Eliot's disillusionment with European society in the aftermath of World War I, which he saw as decaying and lacking in faith. Through vivid imagery and allusions, "The Hollow Men" conveys a sense of existential crisis, as the hollow men await a change in their circumstances but are resigned to the fact that the world will end "not with a bang but a whimper".
