So, the plot of the game was this:
Detention takes place during the "White Terror" around 1960s Taiwan. At this time, paranoia was widespread and people were imprisoned/executed on the suspicion that they were communists spies. Miss Yin and Wei organized a secret book club to share knowledge on banned books considered "communist propanganda."
Ray's home life was collapsing because of her father's love affair and then she got counseling from Mr. Chang. She grew to like her counselor, but was jealous because she thought Ms Yin and Mr.Chang ere in a relationship. This caused her to rat out the book club which got Wei imprisoned. Yin got imprioned and Chang was presumely executed because he was also in the book club
Ray committed suicide due to guilt and the whole game is basically about her traveling in purgatory and reliving the guilt and bad memories.

I think the horror in the beginning is her journey in the world of lingering ghosts. In Buddhism there's a bunch of worlds, world of gods, underworld/hell ( and underworld itself has tons of worlds in it like world of giants, world of ghosts, etc), worlds of humans, animals, insects and the one Ray is in is the world of lingering ghosts. At the point where Ray reach a huge hall with a big statue of the judge, it is to judge if she's ready to reincarnate and that's why they showed her her past to see if she has reflected on her wrongdoings.

_A young girl's choices affected so many lives..._
Detention - not the hours after school, but an eternity where you are detained to relive your life & your life choices. No happy ending for Ray even in the hereafter. As her home was filled with unhappiness & rancor, she found comfort from Chang thru a brief affair. I think she became jealous of what she thought was his relationship with Ms Yin, so she sought revenge by disclosing the book club which promoted independent thought. And the rest is martial law history.
The game did a wonderful job depicting the turmoil of human emotions in a time of turmoil. The song the bells played, Going Home, could sum up the game perfectly... sweet yet sad, we're always looking for shelter in a storm, hoping to find our way.
I enjoyed the game's different simple puzzles, haunting imagery, poetic writing & very good music choices. The ghosts, folklore, & philosophy presented nicely framed the real horror of history & the girl's story.

All the supernatural stuff makes a lot more sense in the context of Fang already being dead. Also some perspective stuff here. During that time period, Taiwan was under martial law says the game. Interesting to think people could be arrested for freedom of thought during a movement usually associated with freedom of thought.

    • @NaturalFlirtGamer

Thelothuo Yes - her death made everything within the plot make sense. And I can’t say enough how much I appreciated the writing here vs the half-baked be-ruffled symbolism in some other games written for “ooooh, cool” effect with zero substance.
Also, I’m not sure I understand what you mean “during a movement usually associated with freedom of thought.” Without getting into the _right_ or _wrong_ of any political viewpoint, ANY time you ban individual expression in literature, art, film, or religious practice - that is oppression.
It doesn’t matter for what lofty reason it is done. It also doesn’t matter if it is done by military takeover of a government or by students on campus banning a speaker because they don’t “like” the speaker’s message. No one has to like the message - we just have to be able to hear it.

The standing regime was anti-communist moving towards democracy and did not allow for political dissent. I found this ironic, as the popular impression of democracy is being tolerant to political dissent. Aye, that is oppression. The interesting bit was the means contrasting the goal. Without getting into the right/wrong of things.

That ending hit hard... but as I interpret it, the "good" end seems to imply that Fang warned the counselor and her female teacher about her snitching. That's how the female teacher managed to get out of the country. The counselor mentions something to wei about who told on them, implying he also knew, but he clearly resigned to his fate (ironic, since he was the one to inspire Fang to take control of her own fate). Fang still kills herself, but the good ending is still kind of nice because Fang earned her peace by owning up to her actions. That's how I like to see it anyway...

HJ Slaughter In one theory, everytime a bad ending occurs represent what happend to Ray before she got a good ending. It's a never ending cycle unless good ending is played.
She was lingering around for eternity since she suicide. She is forced to experience all the guilts again and again and again, until finally she accept the facts and face her guilt.
So, the two endings are not differ from what Ray did when she was alife. But, they both taken place in her after life. Therfore, the bad ending is not an ending, it's Ray trapped in repeated afterlife experiences. It will repeat for eternity unless she finally ended it with the "good ending"

    • @i30817
      @i30817 Před 5 lety +22

This doesn't make exact sense because those prior cycles were *probably* different in small details that leak the 'truth'. For example when she 'kills' the already 'dead' Wei, he opens and closes his eyes. In this cycle, she suspects that he's alive after death. Why?
Because older Wei is wandering around the school and leaving diary notes.
This theory actually makes the bad ending sadder because of course, this is the last and best opportunity for the 'good ending' because the school is going to be demolished for construction and older Wei won't hang around - the bad ending is likely 'forever' or at least what utterly bizarre calculus buddhist/taoist hell takes to leach bad karma through suffering until she's a very comatose ghost and can reincarnate by having no desires or regrets (i've read absurd numbers like 'quintillions', priests have no chill about sinners).
But wait, there is *more* - even if she *does* talk to Wei and seeks and gets forgiveness, she still has bad karma. The other students got tortured, possibly raped, and councilor she loved got tortured and killed even if she now understood he was the only one killed and Wei forgives her offenses to him. So yeah, i suspect she might be too stubborn even then to accept the 'soup' that removes memories from that nice elderly woman that hangs around both the spirit world and real world (spoiler: she's not a normal woman: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meng_Po )

  • @YourAsianGamer
    @YourAsianGamer Před 7 lety +296

So this is what I got Ray was having a hard time dealing with her parents fighting, she eventually started letting this affect her school performance. Letting the Counselor work with Ray to help her vent and get her back on track, and this is how they started developing a relationship, which I guess was budding romantically. Until the teacher leading the book club, Ms. Yin, intervened and convinced the Counselor to break off the relationship with Ray. Ray feeling burned by Ms. Yin, ratted out to Instructor Bai, the hardliner anti-communist teache,r about the illegal book club where they read books which were about banned topics referring to communism or something along those lines, who then alerted the Military, who arrested Yin, the Counselor, Wei, and a few more involved. As a result many of those convicted were given harsh sentences such as execution or prison time, like Wei. Ray was given a public award for her actions ratting out these "Communist Collaborators", but due to her immense guilt or fear of something else, committed suicide as seen in the bad ending, and Wei is then given Amnesty for his "crimes", even though it looks like he had already served the whole time in jail, leaving him an old man as he looks in the ending, even though that wouldve just leave him around the age of mid 30s or whatever. Anyways, the ending is just him going back to the school some years later contemplating on those lost and motives gathered as to what happened.
TL;DR Books are bad, just read doujins online. Or Fuck Communism, but not your students.

So, if I understood it correctly:
Fang started as a very good student at home, until she started experiencing issues at home (father's drinking and infidelity, mother's sorrow). So she sought comfort in her counselor (Mr. Chang), who she became romantically interested in. During this, she met Wei, who let her in on the 'book club', fronted by My. Chang and Ms Yui.
Her mother eventually got tired of her fathers impropriety and hired a private investigator, an had him arrested and carried away. At school, she overheard Ms. Yui talking to Mr. Chang, admonishing him for being with Fang and that they were already a couple.
In jealousy, I wager she gave the book list to Inspector Bai (essentially exposing everything). Ms Yui escaped abroad, Mr. Chang was executed, and Wei tried to burn the evidence, yet was still sent to prison for 15 years, possibly more, before being released.
At some point, Fang killed herself, and tried to accept what happened. I guess Detention is an analog here for Limbo.

What You Deserve Not What You Need
Why is she an idiot? you can blame a number of people for this as it seems to be a huge butterfly effect.
If her father hadn't turned into an abusive adulterous alcoholic her grades wouldn't have suffered. if the consoler hadn't started a romantic relationship with her, if he hasn't cut her off so coldly like he had, if the teacher hadn't told him to. if she was never invited into the book club. remove any of those variables and these events may not have happened.
but it's interesting how the main players of this Domino effect was effected by it: the teacher fled but did she think of those she left behind? the counselor couldn't this time so he basically accepted execution, imprisonment and suicide.

    • @i30817
      @i30817 Před 5 lety +5

she probably didn't think about it too much except to consider it the same as when her abusive parent was arrested (she also probably didn't expect her crush to be arrested, not to speak of being killed and tortured because she misunderstood the 'in the same boat' as a affair when it was a 'conspiracy'). As her mother says 'he'll live'. Too bad that wars between nations are treated a bit different than plebe corruption to a totalitarian regime. All hells, christian and eastern are little more than a psychotic sociological concept of revenge. I'd accept non-existence over hell anyday, for both me and evil men. That this particular hell is self-made and based on slightly inaccurate information (as supernatural entities like the judge and the old woman mention) doesn't really help.

Going Home lyrics, it kinda relates to whats going on...
    Going home, going home
    I'm just going home
    Quiet light, some still day
    I'm just going home
It's not far, just close by
    Through an open door
Work all done, care laid by
    Going to fear no more
    Mother's there expecting me
    Father's waiting, too
    Lots of folk gathered there
    All the friends I knew
    All the friends I knew
    I'm going home
    Nothing's lost, all's gain
    No more fret nor pain
No more stumbling on the way
No more longing for the day
    Going to roam no more
    Morning star lights the way
    Restless dream all done
    Shadows gone, break of day
    Real life begun
There's no break, there's no end
    Just a living on
    Wide awake with a smile
    Going on and on
    Going home, going home
    I'm just going home
It's not far, just close by
    Through an open door
    I am going home
    I'm just going home
    Going home, going home

So heres the story i got from this game.
Fang ( The girl main) and Wei (The boy main) were childhood friends. When she started going to this school, she was in almost anything and naturally became one of the smartest girl in class. Soon however, her father started drinking from the stress of his job, and treated Fang and her mother badly. She soon told her counciler this and he saw something in her, and they started secretly dating. Ms. Yin found out (I think shes his wife) and flipped out on Yang. She started spreading rumors on her and giving her bad grades, making her classmates hate her, everyone but Wei. The counciler didn't want Yang to be this way, because all he wanted was for her to be happy, so he broke up with her, and Yang got depressed. Wei saw this and asked her if she wanted him to tutor her ( as seen in that scene with Yang and Wei at the desk). He soon told her about the secret book club and asked if she wanted to join. As soon as Yang heard about Ms. Yin being the leader of this book club, she told the police ( or whatever would cause that much trouble) about this. Yang went to the office and took the note from the desk and gave it to the police. Although, Ms. Yin had already knew this would happen and already left, making sure Wei and the classmate burned the books (From that scene with them burning the books). Little did they know, Yang knew almost everything on what Wei told her, and they got found out by the police. They were taken away (Wei included). Seeing her mistake, she wanted to get Wei out of this, but he was one of the main people with Ms. Yin. She felt even more depressed and lost herself from this. This is why she is stuck in the school. She commited suicide (Which explains the jumping off the bridge). Although, i think Wei survived, that's why he was the main character. He never blamed this all on Yang, and came back to the school ( which explains the ending). This made Yang realize her true self, making her soul at peace.
(I don't know if all of this is true, but that's what i got from the story. P.S. sorry about any spelling mistakes, i tried my best... :~:)

    • @minigta8632
      @minigta8632 Před 7 lety +1

She most likely realized her mistake from making the councilor and her best friend Wei get in deep trouble and because most of them got a death sentence, she ,must have thought Wei would die as well, and committed suicide in order to be with him. So when Wei got out of prison and found this out, he must have went to the school (When he most likely last saw Fang.) Fang must have thought it wasn't in her place to be with him, and let her soul be at peace.
(P.S. Ms. Yin must have went to another county to fight on human rights for her home country (where Fang and Wei are, i forgot the name...sorry.) and that's where she died of cancer. Ms. Yin most likely got her connections from the counciler ( A.K.A. the person dating Fang) which is why i think she is his wife. The counciler stayed back to help with the books, then would have went with Ms. Yin, but he didn't make it.( sorry, i forgot the counciler's name...)

My only question is: When/Why did the councilor become cold to her? Was it what Yin said to him? Because it seems like he was still intending to continue the relationship when they spoke. Or did it happen after she reported Yin, but before the authorities arrested the councilor? She only ratted out Yin so I would believe that there would be some time before they found out about the councilors actions. This time line is throwing me for a loop.

Yin) went to a higher place." in his note entry ) That's why he gave that book list to her so easily in one of Ray's memories. (You can see he lied a little when he burned his book with his friend who asked him if he know how the book list got out) But it is not the same case with Ray, she was burning with jealousy and just wanted to get a hold of the book list for her revenge. Basically, he was being used but intended or not is still a question. I don't think she know at that time Wei liked her because of her blind jeolousy but we can't deny what she had done is not any less horrible.

He was in prison for less then 15 years probably. So, he was about 30 when he was released. He looks much older at the end of the game. So, he was revisiting there many years later.
It's kinda based on someone's true experience. Or, a mix of a few true events during that era.
