  • Here is the Mossberg 88 shotgun which ha the same action as the 500 and 590. I used to love these shotguns and used them for duty and as a defensive shotgun for years until I found a major flaw in all of them. I've had experience with 3 different 88s, 4 500s, and 2 590s so it's not just one this has the problem. I talk about this at 4:30 so if you own one or want to own one, watch this. Thanks for watching. Share this video to let people whose lives depend on it know the problem. Also subscribe and check out my other informative videos. I try to give the most honest reviews and am not affiliated with any company whatsoever. You can do this test yourself as I said in the video. Many people have told me they have the same issue as well as a few in the field experiences. Also if you can , go and help me out with a small donation of a dollar or two on patreon. All donations will go towards making more videos and coming out with better content. It's a very quick and easy way to keep the channel going. Thanks.

I love the 500, best bang for the buck. Versatile, can convert from a 500 to a 590 and back easily. I’ll keep my eye out for this issue tho I can see where it could happen.

    Had my 500 since 1983, 36 years. It is my go to woods/defense gun. It has been through hell and back. Dropped, fell out of a stand, road in the bottom of many a duck boat. Been everywhere and been through everything. It has never had a ftf or fte. I have shot thousands and thousands of rounds through it, mostly 3" mag goose loads and a butt load of slugs and buckshot. This is probably going to get lost in the noise... but here goes: The metallurgy in the elevator has everything to do with this. Many folks are trying to replicate this failure, dropping their guns, just to see what will happen. Most cannot get it to happen, likely because the steel in their particular elevator is more resistant to "springing" under the inertia of a drop. (And this could simply be that the elevator limbs are sprung a little stronger outward before reassembly of the gun)...
    You can create virtually any scenario to get a firearm to fail (short stroking the trigger on an S&W K or N frame comes to mind)... you can "limp wrist" your Glock (oh no, what if I limp wrist it and it jams in a self defense situation) ~!! :o You might drop your Colt Python on its right side and the cylinder crane gets bent... etc. and so forth ad nauseum. :o
    These are called "sentinel events"... the "distinct outliers" in all "what might happen?" situations. Your beloved firearm of choice will have an Achilles Heel, one way or another. You may not know about it, and that's all well and good--but it *could* happen... but it probably *won't* happen.
    So enjoy your shotgun of choice, revolver or pistol of choice... knowing that the sentinel event you fear most will happen every other time you win your state's lottery. ;)

    Looking at the other comments, I treat this video as "food for thought". Thanks for making us aware.
    A sling is like muzzle discipline and trigger discipline. "I've never..." is hardly a reason to not take secure measures.
    "I've never accidentally pulled my trigger" but I still maintain muzzle discipline.
    "I've never dropped a weapon" but I sling my long arms to ensure nothing causes me to drop them.
    The thing with firearms is that "I've never" becomes tragedy in a heartbeat. So a sling is worth considering.

    Well, I took my Mossy 500 apart, and confirmed this will not happen if the tang safety is set to the forward FIRE position, as the safety prevents the elevator arm pins from coming all the way out. So, the only way this will disable the gun is if it is on SAFE, you drop it exactly onto its side, and you try to pump it without first moving the safety to FIRE - which seems to pop the pins back into place. I keep mine with a loaded mag tube, chamber empty, and safety set to FIRE. So, not really an issue, at least for my specific gun. Anyone else out there with a 500 or 590 can confirm it's not just mine?

      Yes your right we were taught to treat our weapon like our penis to always keep it as close to you as possible and to always keep it clean every chance you can when in the field but may I point out not everyone went in to serve and are typically just home bodies, just everyday people. You see I am a NRA instructor and teach many people self protection with a weapon in and out of their home as well as handgun instruction so they can get their state issued concealed carry permits and after 20+ years of teaching it I can honestly say that almost none of the non service people will act like a military prepped person will and especially when scared for their life, when fight or flight mode kicks in and there knees begin to knock they most typically try to run for safety and will most definitely drop their weapon a time or maybe even two if they even stop to pick it up after the first drop. You were in the service so you know that teaching a regular person how to control their fear and make it work to their benefit when their senses get heightened during that fight or flight mode and how to control their breathing and then dig down deep inside themselves to try and control their heart rate so as to lower their blood pressure well some people just can’t do it. They are going to be as scared after day 10 as they were the first day you tried to teach it to them. Moral to this long blast is not everyone is a marine and not every civilian can be taught what they really need to know! Thanks for reading and God Bless us all....

I have fired several hundred rounds from a 88 with absolutely zero issues. Most people are so partial to their brand, "if it's not a A5 it's nothing" type attitude but yet I've seen A5s and many other expensive brands have issues in the field while a old Stevens is still shooting Clays. I dropped it to test this issue from about a foot high on my floor which is soft carpeting , and the fucking thing did do exactly this!! I used a pen tip to kind of guide it back thru the openings. I tried it again and time after time it did it. This man is totally right about this and it is scary to say the least. I might do a video to show this and hope a change can be made. I know many are gona take offense and say "its never happened to mine!" But trust me i guarantee if u give me 10 seconds with yours and i will duplicate this malfunction. I should say I LOVE MOSSBERG and their firearms. BUT this is crazy. I pray that you guys test it out. If you are afraid of damaging your gun just lay some towels down or something like that but do test yours to see. Also, some are gona say "Well dont drop it like that and it wont do this". Well to those i say i dont plan on dropping mine but my god what happens if you lay it down and it accidentally drops or god forbid you get into a life or death situation and drop it and you dont have a backup weapon??? Anyway guys. PLEASE TEST YOUR GUN AND KNOW THIS CAN HAPPEN!!!

While working on a forestry crew in Alaska a couple years ago I ran into issues with the lifter as well. At first like you mentioned I just messed around with the slide action a bit and she popped right back in place. I noticed the problem became more frequent considering I was packing a lot of gear up a mountain through the forest and the shotgun would get banged around on the way up and actually had it jam up on me at least once, and yes I had to pull it apart back at home. +Jon Walker A reproducible problem is a realistic problem. Just ask any testing engineer who is responsible for ensuring that something is up to the task, whether it be software or hardware. It's a fool's argument to say, just because one has never experienced a problem with a given thing claimed by someone else, that the claim is invalid. I can envision many use cases where this claimed problem would result in failure and possibly even the death of the operator. Running at Port Arms when you slam into the door the fleeing suspect quickly shut behind him, and now he's in the middle of the room with no exit, so he turns toward you, and you're jammed? That was a very short drop needed to cause this failure. Not much of a bump. I'm so very glad dochinson made and posted this video. I'm already designing the fix. If you ever said what you did at Ishmash they would have angrily beaten you and then banned you permanently from the entire complex.

    • @ccsniper
      @ccsniper Před 7 lety +1

      Adam Churvis it is also a fools argument to manufacture a problem and then expect he company to be at fault for said problem. if you go about looking for problems then you will find them. if you put gravel in the striker channel it will fail. well then glock needs to fix this problem right? no, it is an unrealistic issue does not need mending. the Mossberg 500 passed military trials which I assure you included dropping numerous times. This has never been an issue and still isn't. You have to drop the gun a very specific way several times in order to reproduce this malfunction.

    • @adamchurvis1
      @adamchurvis1 Před 7 lety +3

      +Jon Walker Let me try this from a formal testing perspective. When a given thing is designed, it is designed around a specific set of specifications. A disciplined engineer with, before any drawings are even begun, author one or more tests for each detail of each specification so that production candidates can have the test regimen run against them to verify that all specifications are met. At this point all tests are theoretical against a likewise theoretical target of those tests. Once prototyping begins, the unexpected begins to show its ugly head -- this mechanism just won't work as planned, that coating is not as tough as the manufacturer claims, etc -- often causing one or more specifications or their details to be either waivered (dropped by the stakeholders) or modified to better test the thing being built. Once all this has "shaken out" of the project, you have a thing that passes the revised regimen of tests. And so now short runs of production candidates are made and they are tested. The design is then modified, if necessary, to correct any problems discovered when testing many samples, which cannot be discovered nearly as well from testing only one or two at a time. After much testing, redesign, retesting, and so on, the design is finally approved by the stakeholders and production begins. It is, as per agreement, "fully tested," but this by no means suggests that the design is sound because it has only passed those tests which were imagined by the engineers as being salient. It's only after this point that engineers, through customer feedback, learn of elements of the thing that should have been tested but were not. Most of the time, with experienced design engineers and testing engineers, these additional tests could not have been guessed during prototyping because the failure would have seemed virtually impossible at the time. But now new tests must be added to the regimen, and the potentially failing things replaced, retrofitted, or refunded. A very close example to this shotgun lifter issue is the safety issue that happened with the well-tested Remington Model 700 trigger mechanisms, which would occasionally fail. Almost eight million rifles recalled because only a few of them failed, but it was a failure that could now be tested properly, and the test failure discovered a flaw that could be designed around to solve it -- again according to these same tests. Accidental discharges are important to fix no matter how rare; I argue that any design flaw discovered at any time is important to fix if it can leave the operator vulnerable.

This is unfortunate because I don't particularly like firearms that are not drop safe. But I already have one. I'll have to be extra careful. You shouldn't have to baby a home defense gun. Surprising being that the mossberg 590 was the only shotgun to pass the military 3443 tests about 50 years ago. Included tests which the shotgun would be dropped from different heights and angles and then checked to see if it was functional. Apparently it passed all the tests.

    • @CVEIWKID
      @CVEIWKID Před rokem +3

      The shotgun test is a pass-fail test, not a competitive test to identify the BEST gun.
      The test is nothing more than a minimum standard a gun has to meet, it has nothing to do with what is the best gun.
      All a company has to do is submit a gun for the test and if the gun passes the test, then they can bid on the contract.
      Since Remington and the other shotgun makers at the time could not produce a gun as cheap as Mossberg they would not be able to under bid Mossberg, so only Mossberg bothered to submitted a gun for testing.
      If you know you can't beat another company's price, why bother spending all the money to submit a gun that you know you can't get the contract for.
      All the Mossberg advertising that "Only Mossberg passed the grueling Government test....." was at best misleading advertising, if not unethical.
      Only Mossberg submitted a gun.

    I just saw this video (1/4/17) after it being referenced on Calguns.net. I've been issued & using a Mossberg 590A1 for almost 20 years (law enforcement) and never knew about this issue. I did duplicate the elevator (aka lifter) pivot popping out of the receiver with my personal 590A1 just now and it popped out whether the bolt was forward or back.
    I don't believe a new elevator part will cure the problem unless Mossberg totally redesigns that part/area. Therefore, it's important to know the issue exists; to watch out for it; and avoid any side impacts which can dislodge the elevator. For anybody wondering, yes, we are trained to immediately transition to handgun if our long-gun goes empty or malfunctions.

In my opinion a shotgun should be able to survive an eight inch drop onto a hard surface and continue to function. I prefer a weapon that will survive a routine drop and still continue to perform its main purpose.

Why did you buy the last 5 after the first one had this problem? I never have had this problem or heard of this problem. What happened with the part Mossberg sent you, did it it fix it? Do you have to drop it off your roof now to make it jam? If you do not like Mossbergs, say it up front in your video.

      LooseCannon H Mossberg used to be my favorite shotgun before this. They are still fine for bird hunting or for a plinking shotgun but not for defensive use. I mentioned in my other comment why I bought a few to make sure it is all of them and not just one. You say you've never had this issue. Have you ever dropped you Mossy on its side as shown. If not you can not speak on this issue. It is a fact it does it as I show and the part they sent did not fix it. If you drop any of these shotguns from 1 foot or more on its side it will jam. LooseCannon H Also one more thing internet expert, until you are an expert on life or death situations, leave that topic alone. • @1245milam
      @1245milam Před 7 lety +3

      I go to the internet to learn, I speak from my experience. . You call me "internet expert" yet you use "factual data" to back up your case.
      I started using Mossberg 500s in 1975 and was given a 590 in 1988 to use in bowling pin matches and early tactical shooting matches. That`s 41 years of falling, bouncing and holding the gun while dropping to the ground, this has never happened. That`s my experience.
      I asked a former Marine firearms trainer and he said this can happen on well used Mossbergs, the "Elevator Assembly" wears out and needs to be replaced..He also said in a life of death scenario it would be more likely your shotgun being hit by an in coming round then this pin popping out.
      Finally, I dropped my newest Mossberg repeatedly, on the 5th drop this happened. The gun has to be perpendicular to the floor and when I racked the slide the pin popped back in on first try. No disassembly needed.
      You said Mossberg sent you a replacement Elevator, did this fix the problem?

    • @dochinson
      @dochinson  Před 7 lety +2

      LooseCannon H The replacement did not fix the problem. Also I have done this to several of my own new Mossbergs and to friends Mossbergs and it happened with both. Also when racked it jammed the action up because of you wasn't expecting it to do this you would rack it hard. The reason it didn't in the video is.m because I babied it. You can say what you want but I prove that it does it in the video and can make more videos showing it also. It's a fact it does it as shown no questions asked. New or old any Mossberg 500,590, or 88 will do it. Now I'm tired of arguing with so either watch video proof and accept it or you can find yourself off my channel.

    • @ED-es2qv
      @ED-es2qv Před 6 lety +11

      LooseCannon H I've been in combat, and I can report for certain that people have dropped their firearms during a firefight and did not die. I got shot in the leg once at a full sprint with 100 pounds on my back, which caused me to faceplant right onto my weapon, and I didn't die. I picked it up, got to cover, and shot the prick that shot me. I still didn't die. If my weapon had jammed after I dropped it, I might have died. The guy in the video has a point; you don't. He said right in the video that he uses them for shooting, but not self defense, so apparently that's why he buys them. I'm glad he showed me the flaw.
