The Fight for Devil's Den - Ranger Scott Adrian

- Join Ranger Scott Adrian for a guided tour through one of the most unique and visited sites within Gettysburg National Military Park, Devil's Den. The scene of horrific fighting late in the day on July 2, 1863, the rocky crags of the Den were captured by Confederate troops and held by them for the remainder of the battle.

Once again - thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I especially like the fact the different rangers have their own opinions and describe different views of the same battle. All rangers reading from the same script would be boring. Good work
I can easily watch the videos many times. Each ranger is different and interesting I think
Thanks so much for posting the video from Ranger Scott Adrian. I really enjoy his delivery and story telling style. He really brings home the experiences of the soldiers. I would encourage everyone to also watch his Little Round Top presentation. It's excellent as well!

Good presentation, but 2 things: 1) General Hood did suffer a wound to his left arm, but it wasn't amputated. However, I don't believe he ever regained full use of the limb. 2) General Thomas Meagher was still alive in July, 1863, but was no longer with the Army of the Potomac, having resigned his commission two months before. The Irish Brigade was then commanded by Col. Patrick Kelly. Meagher would die under mysterious circumstances almost exactly 4 years later ( July 1, 1867) in what was then the Montana Territory. He supposedly fell off a steamboat into the Missouri River and drowned. Theories range from his being drunk, ill or being murdered by political opponents.

Not that it is a bad thing and I respect the rangers and their knowledge, but this guy reminds me of Dwight Shrute.
What isn't mentioned in his description of the "Orange Blossoms" and their part of the fight on day 2 is how Van Horn Ellis initially would not engage the oncoming confederate troops. Major Cromwell of the 124th went to the colonel three times requesting permission to lead an attack but was denied each time. Finally after he was refused the third time, Cromwell called for his horse and yelled "The men must see us today!!!" as he rode off to lead a sorty of his own. The gallant major was shot from his saddle in the triangular field by the oncoming confederate troops. It was upon seeing his friend and fellow officer fall that the colonel finally called for an advance to retrieve the major's body and halt the rebels. The colonel would also be felled in the triangular field by a ball to his forehead which did not kill him instantly. His remaining men drug the bodies of their colonel and major from the field before they were eventually over-ran or retreated.
Yes, that part is missing, the video with Matt Atkinson, tells that part of the battle.
Damn 9:30, no mention of the 3rd Arkansas being the primary regiment on the confederate side to square up in devils den. Tom Berenger did the same thing in the movie. Hoods brigade consisted of 3 Texan regiments(1st, 4th and 5th Texas infantry) and 1 Arkansas regiment, 3rd Arkansas, one of the best regiments in the entire army of northern Virginia, the entirety of the Texas Brigade were considered elite at the time, Lee’s Grenadier Guard as it were.
2021 and the devils of devil's Den are a plenty this yr. 🐍🐍🐍🐍
Love the information but is this guy foster brooks?
It was free range for livestock-they built most rock fences to keep livestock OUT of areas not so much to keep animals enclosed.

They were not packing sixty pounds of gear during this fight
With all due respect to the ranger, I don’t think Hood’s arm was actually amputated after he was injured. I believe he just lost it’s use for the rest of his life.
Only 60 rounds of ammo? That's 20 minutes of fighting. What did they do then?
There's nary man can load and fire 60 rounds in 20 minutes. A person can't load and fire 3rounds in one minute. And being under fire you would be hit real quick between the 1st and 2 nd. shot. I know l would knock you down that quickly.
Ehhhh, this is just okay. Kinda "undulating" in its delivery.
