Spider-Man has the greatest costume in the history of Super Heroes. But where did the original idea come from. Ceratinly, the legendary Steve Ditko created the suit, right? But what role did Jack Kirby play? And where was Stan Lee in all of this. And what about a Brooklyn Costume Maker by the name of Ben Cooper - whose company put out a Spider Man costume in 1955 that bore a striking resemblance to the one we now all know and love from comic books to action figures to video games to movies. Let's dig into the mystery or conspiracy of the origins of Spider-Man's costume!

I had this cloth Spidey costume as a kid and looking back it’s pretty much the best Halloween costume I ever had. But mine was slightly different. No hood or belt and the shirt and pants were one piece that you stepped onto from an opening in the back and tied at the top of the neck. I pretty much wore it out because I didn’t just wear it at Halloween I used it when playing pretend as well. Eventually only the mask survived and when you talked about knowing what that mask feels like on your face it was instant recall for me.
Alex Ross often talks about how with Romita’s approach to the web pattern, the web lines on the front of Spidey’s face seem to indicate a nose and a mouth. I couldn’t help but notice the mouth hole for the plastic mask is cut exactly on that mouth line.

Great video as always! One thing to point out though is that the Kirby Spider-Man artwork image at 1:09 could be a doctored image using Giant Man artwork from the Tales to Astonish #51. I think the only known Kirby’s Spider-Man costume design can be seen from an artwork piece that Ditko did that outlines the difference between his published Spider-Man costume design and Kirby’s design.
You are totally correct about all of this. I tried to keep this one pretty fast moving and not pick on every detail, but you got all of that spot on based on my reseatch

that mask on the first licensed one really reminds me of the hallucination Jonah had in one of the ditko issues where spidey was drawn with pupils and an eerie grin
