- Not sure of the exact date - all I know is it was a Sunday, I was 9 months pregnant, tired, swollen and sick but there was no way in the world I was going to miss an opportunity to interview the legendary Luther Vandross. And despite my discomfort - it was one of the most enlightening and inspiring interviews I've ever been a part of. Luther was generous, funny, smart and obviously talented. He sings throughout the interview and also gives invaluable advice on life, love and a career in the music business.
My son Tyler was born 2 or 3 days later so he's lucky his name wasn't Luther. lol. This was 11 years ago. WOW.

Love Luther Vandross. Fell in love with his music in the 80’s. Loved everything he sung. Was devastated when he passed. Can’t believe that it’s been almost 14 yrs. RIP Luther
Wow it's been that long
In 1986 stop to love was my favorite song... I was 16 from Italy! ❗ I listen only English music... I put this song on ring tone mobile phone. When I saw a few days ago that he died I realized how we really are in a short passage...
I was there at this seminar, it was a birthday gift to myself. i will never forget, I got to hug Luther Vandross and talked to him about the spirituality of being a musician and vocalist. I still have my pictures of this seminar and I remember Nikki being pregnant!!!
Shaneka Barbee what year?
How was luther in person he seems really cool
Had to be “02”
Are you in the music industry?
Shaneka Barbee Can you share what he said?
I love Luther's speaking voice and the way he pronounces his words
Taking nothing away from Nat, but Marcus Miller was also a HUGE part of that classic Luther sound.
absolutely true
Dassa FACT!!
Shango Jamal Absolutely! Marcus Miller is an exceptionally talented man in his own right.
Nat Was The "SOUL" Marcus, Was The "FUNK" In The Vandross Sound.
Absolutely, particularly for a rhythmic/dance aspect. He brought groove and attitude to compliment LV's smooth and Nat's meticulous arranging. Respect and RIP to the Ronzoni.
I'm a huge Luther fan. Thank you for sharing this with us.
What A Gentleman God we need you now in this Music Place... come back soon..x
I can never ever fault this beautiful human being, I'm friends with his people , and i've spent my entire adult life listening to Luther, and I'm so glad I did as it's the very reason I'm in the music today.x
Luther's complete honesty, and humbling way, as he recognizes his collaborator Nat Adderley Jr, and the inspiration of Dionne Warrick, leave me with the experience of just having met a very genuine and talented individual . Thank you for sharing this priceless interview!
Missing Luther. . .great piece of history. It's amazing that 8 years after Luther's death, I'm still learning new things about him. So many lessons from this interview: pursue your passion despite other's rejection of it; cultivate valuable personal and professional relationships; seek inspiration; develop your craft to perfection. . .
Thanks Nikki. There's Never Too Much of Luther !
I would love to hear Nat work with Jaheim.
Luther ensured he was surrounded and supported by good people. who all contributed to the great man's star shining bright.
Luther drops some critical knowledge on building a network and crafting great music right here. Greatness doesn't just happen, everyone needs some kind of help to get there.
This is like finding treasure - listening to creative folks who we are fans of talk about their process - with Luther, Nat & Marcus you just cannot lose
What a wonderful post!
love from israel🇮🇱
What a charming man, he was a rare person, how honest and how humble.
The man sings love songs because he has become love itself.
Excellent interview. Very enlightening. Thank you. ;-)
You're welcome
He was funny as hell while articulate! Thanks for the insight into this inimitable artist! Some have tried...nope 2nd rates!
As a singer, I love the simplicity and power of this. RIGHT PROCESS AND RIGHT TEAM...
the guy on the piano. I remember there was a young man who was so eager to show Luther Vandross what he could do that he ran to sit at the piano, knocking the guy in the glasses off completely and began playing and singing a song he had written himself for Luther. It was the funniest thing!!! the piano guy wasn't even mad, tho, and Luther was saying, "That's the kind of drive and ambition you need in this business!!"
You better bring it if you knock Nat Adderley, Jr, off the piano!
@@thescatman5029 You know that!
Who was it
He sang Superstar live on WGCI and it is THE best version...once the station changed it was never played anymore.
A great interview, thanks for sharing Nikki. I've seem pt1 and pt2, hope the rest is available. ..Luther, a great man, gone too soon !!
This is so great. Glad you shared such a special occasion for yourself with us. Thank you Nikki
I love when a great artist gives those that assist him and the musicians their props.
Such a great in depth interview with Luther and Nat Adderly Jr I wonder what is Nat doing these days?
This is a raw and wonderful interview. I love part 1 and 2. Where is the rest of the interview? Please Please Please upload the rest of the interview. I love Luther Vandross---he was an amazing talent
Solid Interview! Thanks for posting.
Anyone who had a heart, I who have nothing, and Superstar...a few of my favorite remakes!! RIP Luther
Wow fantastic!! Thanks so much for posting~
Thank you for that. Miss him dearly but his music lives on and on forever.
Luther is the voice but Nat is definitely the sound.
🔥 TEAM
Just the small singing of "anyone who had a heart" was incredible.
One of the greatest music collaborations of all time. Love and miss you Luther brother. David Bahar Edinburgh x. Thank you for posting this Nikki Woods.
Thank you for sharing this, Nikki Woods. What a treasure. Hope you are enjoying that baby.
Luther's Success was Nat,Marcus & all the Background singers!! Lou was very funny!!
I miss you....
I would have loved to hear his answer on running his business military style. They called him a divo. He was right because that’s his name on the marquee!!!!

I'm from Italy 🇮🇹 and in 1986 stop to love was my favorite song and also today ... I love Rhythmic and voice. warm of black singers. A few days ago, looking for this song, I saw that he was dead. How time passes... RIP
wahoooouuuuu i never seen this video Luther was a master that's all...One of my legendarys singers and mentor
Everything he said is the truth! Miss you Luther! RIP
I remember back in the day when Na't's dad introduced Nat, who was 11 years old at the time.. It was at some concert and we were so amazed that this little kid was jamin with his dad and his uncle.
Thank you NIKKI 💖
This is so awesome! great interview and I love this style of artist to fan interaction ! very cool! and the lady that wanted to background sing for Luther, well u had the mic, lol go on 'head and sing for him, lol that was ur moment lol :)
"BUT LUTHER. . . HE CAN'T SING..." - THE LATE GREAT QUEEN WHITNEY HOUSTON :D
12:40 The legend singing for all...the voice!!🎉🎉🎉
Que homem maravilhoso !
I loved this! Is there a way that the entire interview could be posted?
Thanks for this is there another part
thanks
Wow. Black music is DYNAMIC. I remember when Chuck Berry wanted to change the key of a tune he was playing with Keith Richards and Keith told him no and then said he didn't know why Chuck couldn't just stay in same key and it was apparent that Keith just didn't get it. That going with the spirit/flow and playing what you feel IS black music. Tremendous and dynamic and unless you're black especially when white, you're not going to understand. This is why black music took over America and now the world even with Hip-Hop/rap everywhere. In fact Michael Jordan said @ this CZcams video: Michael Jordan on Arsenio Hall Show (1990) that he changed plays/moves @ will and always gave 110%. THAT'S BLACK. That's Jazz. Beautiful.
+2dasimmons ya those rolling stones never went anywhere
Sure the Rolling Stones got around but not in Chuck Berry's league. He was an originator they admired. I'm with them!
GOT AROUND?? im not a stone fan nor a Berry fan but you could atleast say that the stones are still one of the top 5 bands ever..
you know what .,have a nice day
The Rolling Stones were FANS OF CHUCK BERRY which is why Keith Richards was adamant about participating in HAIL HAIL ROCK "N" ROLL movie by Taylor Hacksford.
Still miss him
nat jr. have you worked with Jane Oliver.? You are a superb pianist! carol Mulkern ny
Nice story
WOW A SIDE IF LUTHER I NEVER SEEN
edward roper I’ve never heard his accent in speaking voice!
Is there anywhere we can watch this entire interview and all the Q&A?
Wow
Respect the gift God has given you. Your gift isn’t to match mine, just like the shade of a color, but to be distinct enough to be of value to the One who gave it to you. When used, your blend is just as important to make the sound as vital like the shades of colors. Each shade has its purpose and its blend makes the whole picture beautifully . Make no apologies for your gift. Just use it to the glory of God! Rainbows have many shades on purpose for the eye. Yet the blend, like voices, make it harmonious to the ear. Use your gift!
Question, at 11:56 you start to ask a question, and we never get to hear his response... is there another part of a video that has Mr. Vandross answering the question???
Don't know if there's another interview but that was Luther's rep. Cheryl Lynn kinda gave hints to this during a interview she did with Luther after they did "if this world was mine" on soul train. I saw it on CZcams
Also if you have Netflix there's a segment on "20 feet from stardom" where they talk about Luther and Lisa fisher etc... This may help give a little insight, bro.
Torrey Russell Exactly! That's what I wanted to hear!
He should!! That’s his name on the marquee
14:08 I hate people who approach celebrities and start making demands. First, he wants Luther to sing Happy Birthday to his wife. Then, he wants Luther to hug her. What's next? Have sex with her? People can be so stupid and rude.
This is the same as Part 1
Luther looked great here in 2002. By 2003 he gained a lot or weight and then had the stroke. So sad.
By late 2002 during his uncf performance.
he was talking about anyone who had a heart cila black 7.25
+vince daffon He mentions Dionne Warwick @ 8:22
No. It was Dionne Warwick.
Nat to Luther is like Qunicy to Michael
i wonder if a lady from Liverpool England(cilla black) knew she inspired the wonderful Luther Vandross
@ALEXANDER GOMES Cilla Black was never Luther's inspiration. His inspirations were Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, PattI Labelle, Cissy Houston (Whitney's mother) and Diana Ross. He says it here in this seminar and his biography written by Craig Seymour. Cilla Black did not compare with any of these women.
Incidentally, the song "Anyone who had a heart" was done by Dionne Warwick before Cilla Black. Cilla also copied "Don't make me over" after Dionne. This 'copying' caused rivalry between the two.
The shade towards Destiny's Child at 18:36 did NOT age well.
I've actually jammed w this pianist here. Really fine musician..
Luther is one of the all time greats but to call the Caroenters version of "Superstar""bubblegum"? Really? Nah...
I prefer Karen''s version, no question. More haunting... Deeper... for me at least.. Maybe he wanted to take the song in a different direction but to refer to it as "Bubbegum" is a bit of a low blow. My favorite Luther song is "Dance w My father". BTW, EVERY singer I talked to marveled at how Luther sounded live.
Charles Telerant it was bubble gummish - love the Carpenters - but his version is amazing
Just his opinion. He more than earned the right to express it.
Thank GOD, they left out the Elephant in the room question!😂
Heard the talk about music but not love or his love life at all... I am sure before interview his PR person said any questions about his private life was off limits.
His private life was just that PRIVATE. He was entitled to keep something for himself. He shared his God given talent to us for which I am eternally grateful. I miss you so much Luther
I'd rather hear about the music. His love life was none of my business.
Yes it was really none of our business, we were blessed with his music and angelic voice. The greatest Male vocalist of all time...my opinion
He did not want to upset his female fans by telling the truth ...
Luther drops some critical knowledge on building a network and crafting great music right here. Greatness doesn't just happen, everyone needs some kind of help to get there.
